Great analysis for a great waltz. I completely agree with you! And I have ever wondered why Chopin didn't publish it. It's a very rich and original work, full of grace and energy at the same time. I think your discovery about scherzo n.1 similarity is correct and enlighting. Thank you so much for completing the analysis of Chopin posth. work.

Didn't he regret fantasie impromptu bc he wrote that one when he was young and ... "immature" (in his own opinion)? I guess perhaps he got plagiarism accusations re: beethoven moonlight sonata movement 3 (one of the last measures)?? (Interestingly in some music scenes, particularly jazz, plagiarism is a concept that makes no sense, other material is seen merely as other tools or constituent parts to be used freely with no concept of ownership, even if more "egregious" than that for which any lawsuit has ever been filed) lol I'm joking. It's hard to say if that would even conceptually be an issue the way it is seen in the modern era with intellectual property laws the way they are, which is not at all how things have always been seen. I'm just saying I don't know, not one way or the other. It's nothing beyond a single descending run. If it were going up or down a more basic scale nobody would even say anything. But these days lawsuits are filed over pop music which is inherently generic and unoriginal, repetitive with only like 2 or 3 looping sections, it's funny but scary for musicians

I learned this one as a little kid (~25 years ago) Nice to hear how its supposed to be played. I listened to some versions online of professionals playing it (prep for recital back then) but the couple i found then played even more immaturely than I did then lol from what I remember anyway (a number of them seemed to see it as a speed contest) havent taken lessons for >15 years, most of that time with nothing to play on [ignoring guitar]. Your videos are very helpful since ive been trying to get back into it on my own recently. Taught myself jeaux deau over the last 3 months (got notes down which is not the same as mastering it by any means), relearning revolutionary etude, trying to improve this one along with a few debussy works to professional level. Double 3rds and some listz transcendental etudes on the side. And polishing moonlight mvmt 3 only bc naive people think that one is so impressive (millions of yt views for adults when i learned that as a little kid... i.e., "pizza delivery guy sees piano and plays THIS unexpectedly")

my absolute favorite waltz performed by Chopin! It is really underrated compared other pieces like his nocturnes and prelude. I just wish this was a bit more popular than most of the other nocturnes.

A very rich video indeed, thank you! Is there any evidence that Chopin pre-prepared a 'portfolio' of pieces to take with him to Vienna? If he did, that helps with the 1830 date (and makes him very foresighted to have realised in advance the need to call the salons to attention with his intro). But if not, then surely the intro puts this into 1831(+) with the Scherzo, as you think AND: NB, his 2 '1829' Waltzes don't have the 'call to attention' intro. BTW, Wikipedia says 1868 for publication and perhaps the lack of an autograph didn't help??? Since you ask.... You could always analyse the Concerti in the 2-piano versions... (😆😆). For my part, though I'd love to hear you play the Concerti with an Orchestra, I'm keener to hear your analysis of the remaining Posthumous piano works. You do seem to have Concerto No 1 well under your fingers however!

Waltz as a dance by its nature it’s intimate because it’s a couple dance , it expresses the passion and connection between a man and a woman . This waltz is very romantic and intimate with a deep meaning . I feel as a man that in the part 31:32 he is expressing his anger and rage about something erotic , maybe he was rejected by a woman that he loved or he didn’t dare to express his feelings to her ? Who knows , I am sure 100% it has something to do with women. It’s not difficult to understand Chopin if you are a man )) Also maybe because my parents were from the Soviet Union I know personally the beauty and charm of Slavic women so I do understand Frederic’s soul perfectly ))

May I ask what you think about the RH chord in MM 90 (Ekier edition)? It's written differently in the Paderewski edition. Which is preferred?

I'm surprised you didn't compare that flashy right hand bit to Etude 25-12 instead, since it went up and down octaves with a note in between.

Yes, I was thinking about that but than I decided to skip it as something quite obvious, and also marginal. I decided that the coda is much more interesting to compare as it shows more when the piece could have been composed. Thanks for pointing this out!!
