Chopping Corn 2022! Day 1

After a hard freeze in Minnesota, it was time to get the corn chopped. Our upright stave silo by the barn is empty and ready to be filled after Alan raised the silo unloader and with help from his brother, Paul, the Gehl silo blower was greased, oiled, and hooked up to the silo. After that, we did a test run of the 790 New Holland Chopper by green chopping some corn for the cows quick. Everything ran smoothly, so it was time for the real deal now. The International 1256 tractor was rolling coal with the chopper and chopper boxes behind as Alan opened up the field. Corn Chopping 2022 is officially underway!

Trinity Dairy was established in 2006, in Minnesota. Alan and Jennifer farm with their 5 children; Jessica, Justin, Jordan, Joshua, and Jason. We milk a mix of 33 Jersey, Holstein, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, and Ayrshire cattle. We also enjoy sharing our family's love of Draft Horses and using them for logging and other farm work. Dairy Farming in Minnesota can be challenging, but it's a lifestyle we really enjoy. Subscribe today to watch our small family dairy farm and family grow while continuing to thank our Lord for the blessings we've been given.

Fond memories of silo filling.... We had a belt drive Allis Chalmers blower. I had flashbacks from 40yrs ago at the start of the video hammering those bands on the pipes with poor old Crescent wrenches. A long passed neighbors wrenches were beat.... Pipes went from neighbor to neighbor every time as a shared unit. I got to climb to the top of silo many times with a rope around my waist to thread the pulley up top to pull the pipe up.

Thanks Alan, your video takes me back to the late 40's when I was a young lad around 9 or 10 with the filling of the silos but it was not chopped in the field like you do. It was brought in bundled and fed in as you are doing but being chopped at the same time it was going up and in the silo.

I have an old family journal circa 1890 that mentions them topping (not detaseling) the corn to feed livestock (not a dairy herd) after the corn was mature and still green. DeKalb Co., IL

Ya know you show it just the way it is. Farmers improvise all the time to make things work. If you don’t know how to adapt or make things work you will see the financial impact. Always loved chopping corn! The smell and knowing the cows are going to love it means something to me.

I unloaded many loads of corn with a false tailgate into one of those blowers with a potato hook! Be careful in the silo, last week we had a tragedy out here- Father & two sons died from silo gas, same family, same day. I opened a good many corn fields with a corn sickle, loved doing it and got pretty good at it!

I can already smell the chopped corn silage from here... anyone whom asks why you use upright silos does not understand the concept of a small family sized dairy farm... these silos make way more sense for a smaller operation than trench, bunker or Bags.... the feed keeps better so long as you can use it fast enough with a ton less waste than those with piles of rotten silage in the bunkers
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754
You know there was almost nothing better as a kid than unloading silage boxes into the blower! A lot of people complain about them silos but boy I like them and like you said the quality of feed outstanding, and you're not starting a tractor everyday

Do you run a kernel processor on the 790? The clattering noise from the engine on the 1256 sounds like it's getting worse, not sure if it's a loose valve or exhaust leak but you might want to address it if it's a loose valve clearance issue, could end in a catatrophic valve train failure🤔😣 Your channel brings back many amazing memories for me as a kid growing up on a small family dairy milking 30 to 35 cows. Can't beat the lifestyle and rewards, nothing compares. Cheers
@trinitydairy

Back in the 60's, before self-unloading wagons appeared, my 2 uncles had used box wagons that had a cable driven sled in the front of the wagon that moved the silage to the rear powered by a motor that you installed to a shaft that wound the cables to the rear, They used tined pull forks to pull the silage onto the feeder belt that fed into the blower (like you use). Back then, that was considered state of the art. I helped pull that silage off the wagons when I was little. Those were some of the best days of my youth. I'm glad I grew up working on my 2 uncles dairy farms. Love watching your videos. God Bless.

To make room b. The prise was to good to be ignored. Memories when we were young and invincible!
