Chopping Corn 2023! Day 2/Drought Stricken Corn

The drought that we have been dealing with is really taking its toll on our corn this year, causing us to have to start chopping our corn earlier than we'd like. The International 1256 on the New Holland 790 Corn Chopper get right to work. You can really see the difference in the corn throughout the field. Back at the farm, the International 1066 is pulling Badger Chopper Boxes to the silo where the Case 830 is blowing the silage into our upright silo. The corn is very poor, but with the drought we've been having, we are thankful for anything we can get.

The corn sure varies with the soil type. At least it has more salvage value as silage compared with corn for grain. Challenging years sure give us an appreciation for the good years where everything seems to jive. I've found that as I get older my dependence on our Lord for dealing with the stresses of life is increasing yearly. Nice to see we aren't the only ones running "old iron"

I recall a couple years back when your corn looked bad early from lack of rain but then timely rains came and I was amazed how great it looked at chopping time. "timely rains"..............make a huge difference.

Yes, this sure has been a year of diverse drought conditions. Someone 20 miles away can have a great stand of corn or beans and others have not. Nothing new though, we seen this all before a few times over the years. God bless your family!

"Leveling off silo", ie, getting covered up in the silage, forking like crazy, and the temps are always 10° above ambient with near 100% humidity. It's a wonder it doesn't rain inside of a capped silo. I don't miss those days, but I didn't regret getting a bagger! Great video!

I always enjoyed chopping corn silage. I had basically the same harvester and pulled it with a IH 966. Cows really love eating corn silage, and it made us feel good watching the milk cows get right into their silage, I thought it made them happy, and kept them in good body condition.

Question: Many viewers are novice. What is silage? One of the dairy farmers where I grew up had silos. But he also had a huge hole in ground filled and covered with tarp. Next question is why silage instead of hay?
@brandonhoad9033

I've taken to leaving a 2 row gap where I would run over corn in silage fields. Keeps tractor out of limbs and keeps from wasting fertilizer and seed
@tomcarlisle2459
@tomcarlisle2459 11 месяцев назад
Same here. I left the whole 6 rows on the outside of the corn fields and mowed them for hay. Not sure if its worth it or not, but I no longer deal with downed limbs and branches that would be hidden in the corn.

We checked out my corn today, it wasn't as bad as I thought, but I'll have to get at one bags worth next week. I hope you have enough to get bye some sure looks burnt. That stuff will need to ferment for awhile to mitigate any nitrates in the plant from the drought stress. Take care.

Good video. It was about 1970 when it rained so much, the fields where wet and my uncle would chop corn on the fields that he could. When I came home from school, we hooked up 2 four wheel drive tractors. One was a case 1494 and the one on the chopper was a case 2294. I would pull my uncle thrust

Yeah it's been very dry. We decided to plant only 12 acres of corn. We are putting it on top of the third cutting alfalfa. We have about 20 ft of silo space in that silo and we aren't sure if that will fill it. Not much for yields this year but I think we will have enough so we won't have to buy too much feed. It's been a strange year.

i have been through years like yours, i've chopped corn before it even made cobs or tassels, the trick to dry years is checking stalk moisture constantly. the worst dry year i had i was doing moisture tests every 4 days starting at the end of july, as soon as it was round 65% i starting chopping, with the corn not producing a cob i wasn't really sure it was worth it but bagged it anyway, turned out to be super milk feed, analysis came back 89% digestible and sugars were super high and the goats sure put milk in the tank on that stuff

They can be, but I don't think I'll be feeding it until it ferments, so that should take care of any nitrates.

Do you have enough corn for silage with it being so dry? Im doing winter rye after corn silage for early forage for next spring
@trinitydairy
@trinitydairy 11 месяцев назад
We should have enough. I had planted more corn this year with the intention of having picking corn to grind for heifer feed. That extra corn should make up for the poorer yield of silage corn. I'll just have to buy heifer feed.

@trinitydairy
@trinitydairy 11 месяцев назад
I keep them up pretty good, try to sharpen and adjust, about every 10-12 loads, the biggest issue is the short thin corn, the feed rollers can't hold it, so the leaves get pulled through.
