Another foray into my bag of tricks relating to chords. Common tones are an amazingly powerful concept to use for writing great chord progressions. They can also help you to understand difficult chromatic progressions, and the secret sauce behind some of the best pop chord sequences.

On the flip side, chords that don't have any common tones or only one can create pretty strong progressions if used in a consistent pattern. Chords that move by SECOND degrees sound great too. Example: Am - G - F - G - Am (All Along the Watchtower) or G - Am - Bm - C (Here, There and Everywhere)
@memeteam2692
@memeteam2692 Год назад
The two concepts work best when mixed. That's why C - G - Am - F is so common. Changes w common tone provide smooth harmonic movement, but changes without common tones are needed for melodic movement when desired, since common tones stay mostly static

Yeah if its all smooth changes then there is nothing distinctive and might result in some boring ass sh.

Wong never does me wrong. GREAT GREAT advice. I've been learning a bunch of theory but having been struggling to apply it to get THAT sound. You're the man. Cheers

Solid word choice. Trevor articulates the complexities that make music theory overwhelming for most on the guitar so succinct with his RU-vid vids. His videos have improved my playing tremendously during the pandemic and admire the crap outta him. Much love Trevor ❤️

I've made chord progressions that share a common tone throughout without really knowing what I'm doing, I just liked the sound. Like I made one progression of G -> Gmaj7 -> G6 -> Cadd9, D, Em7, and for all of them I kept the same D on 3rd fret of the B string pressed. Sounds cool, like a constant chiming throughout the progression.

I come here to common...I mean comment about this topic which you mentioned in Let's Talk About Math Rock's video about Delta Sleep's chord progression. Still a great idea for me to discover.

Hey trevor, I really like your videos and how they help out with a lot of cool ideas to songwriting and chord progressions, but I've been meaning to ask if you knew about any channels to recommend for math rock style bass playing

Check out Tonnetz charts - they show a beautiful map of chords with their common tone relationships, and it includes non-diatonic relationships as well.

I’m really interested in the common tone non diatonic approach at around 8minute mark. Does anyone know where I can get more information on this please?

Hi Trevor, I am still learning music theory. Although, at time-code 3:32 when you say you move by 3rds or 5ths do you mean intervals. I still get degrees and intervals confused. I believe intervals is about the relationship or distance between two notes. Correct? So are you saying to create smooth common tones you want to keep the interval movement between chord movements to 3rds or 5ths?

Do you have any pivoting exercises on your patreon?
@brettsheets7465

when you're pivoting around a common tone does that common tone typically become your key center then?

By pivoting on a note, do you mean anything different than 'choosing chords that have this note'?
@hendrix5757
@hendrix5757 3 года назад
Not necessarily. It's very similar to another well known melodic/compositional related tool, known as a 'pedal tone'. As far as the specific function that a 'pivot note' provides the ability to use a single note as a means to connect any variety of chords that may, or may not, contain said note. It can simply be a single note that's consistently bounced off of to move to different chords. I hope that helps.

Question for anyone who can answer... it says in the video that "common tones occur when we write progressions which move in 3rds or 5ths". Does this apply to major keys only? For minor keys would it be b3rds and 5ths? I'm always confused about how a lot of the tips I see about "major" or "minor" apply to specific keys/scales (ex: harmonic minor, dorian, etc). Can anyone please elaborate further on this? Thank you. Great video by the way.
@nesicus
@nesicus 3 года назад
I was following you up till around the 3 minute mark. Got confused there. You say that progressing in 3rds gives you two tones in common -- cool. But then you said moving in 5ths, e.g. G to D, gives you only one tone in common. How's that? You have both the D and an F#, no? I mean, in the key signature. I guess you're just talking about the triadic composition? But if you did a GMaj7, you would then have the F# in common as well. Maybe something to consider? Also, not sure what you meant around the 4 min mark when you said you were moving in 4ths. Relative to what? D to A is still another fifth.
