I am sure you have heard a great chord solo by Wes, George Benson or Joe Pass, and it is a great sound that seems almost impossible to get into your own playing, but if you are a little practical about how you start working on it then it may not be as difficult as you think.
In this lesson, I am going to take one area of the neck and a II V I in G major and then I will show you how to start making your own chord solo licks with a few voicings that you probably already know.

But looking at these videos from the start of the covid era is great bc it's easy to see how sophisticated your videos have become in such a short time. @@JensLarsen Hey Jens, if you don't mind me asking, when you yourself solo, do you improvise the chord solos, or do you kind of make them before you perform? Also, how do you know when to use substitutions when comping? I know all of these 9ths and 13ths that people say to learn, but no matter the song, I almost always go back to the simple chords like dom7. They (chord extension) dont sound drastically different enough for me to use one over the dom7th, and no soloist or bassist asks me to use a certain chord. I also have a bad ear (even though i transcribe and do ear training), so that doesn't help
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 3 года назад
@@cjgreen4331 I don't make the solos in advance. Using different extensions on a dominant is not substitution. It is about what you are doing with the chords in the progression as much as it is about a single chord
@cjgreen4331
@cjgreen4331 3 года назад
@@JensLarsen @Jens Larsen Ahh, I forgot. Substitutions are tritones, diminished forms like Pat Martino uses, etc. What I meant was how do we know when to use substitutions? And I get what you mean by the chords in the progression, like how you use certain extensions to start chromatic movement or build tension in your comping

I remember my guitar teacher 20y ago reacted to my question „how can I learn this chord and melody rubato dingeling thing?“ with the disappointing words „man, you ask questions... where shall I begin!?“ Good answer would have been „put a melody note on chords from your Progression and try solid melodies and simple finger positions.“ finally...

I got your book and I’m working my way through the lessons. I like the emphasis on making phrases with the notes of the scales rather than mindlessly going up and down the scales ! I am working on making short musical phrases with just a few notes at a time. That helps me to make music while learning the notes. Keeps me motivated to learn more. Practicing scales becomes monotonous and I lose interest quickly ! Thanks for all the great teaching. BTW.
