Here's the next episode of Chordplay - The Chords of Buckethead.
This lesson features a number of interesting and unusual chords from the masked bucket-wearing shred-meister - including both the nightmare "graveyard chords" and somber dreamlike sounds he targets and plays in his unique otherworldly music.
Give this lesson a view and be sure to warm-up your hands before you play through this lesson - this is an ADVANCED Chordplay episode/lesson. Do don't hurt yourself with some of these chord shapes, so be careful if you have non-cyborg hands!
Good luck and let me know what happens and PLEASE subscribe to the Late Night Lessons RU-vid channel - THANK YOU!!!

Awesome you recognized 'Buckethead' as one of our great guitar talents. I am a grown ass man and 'Colma' brings me to the verge of tears every time I listen to it.

That is album is so DAMN good! : ) Pure human emotion and spirit. I like when he plays crazy R2-D2 sounding stuff, but there's nothing quite like Buckethead when he starts playing emotionally. The song Dawn Appears has a similar effect on me.

great lesson Dave. This was fresh perspective as a lot of folks focus on the "nubbing" and flashier stuff. Keep 'em coming!

Thank YOU and I'm glad you liked it. I'm trying my best to be "different" - which is part of the reason I'm hitting chords right out of the gate with Late Night Lessons and this Chordplay series. Everyone else is shredding their fingers off online (which is cool), so I figured someone should focus on the REAL monster in the room = chords. : ) lol pEaCe...

You smoothly recognize and show those patterns. Thank you! My head is ready - now to get those four little gymnasts back to where once upon a time...

If you like 30’s - 60’s b&w cartoons... Betty Boop and so on... Sci if from that time, you can hear dissonant stuff and these kinds of chords from bucket. I feel like as to where a lot of us start with blues and maybe throw back to lightning, Blind Lemmon etc... He’s actually throwing back to sounds that come from tv and Hollywood from the 30’s and so on. There’s a wealth of knowledge in a ton of movies and cartoons from back then, where intellectual composers and visceral musicians were being thrown together by movie studio composers to come up with new sounds. I love buckets use of dissonance on a regular. I wish he’d drop into some late Coltrane kinds of things sometimes. I think he, Peter Brotzman and Han Bennink could do some really far out work together.

That's awesome and thank you! I've love classic cartoons and a big part of it is the music as well. Older music and long-lost/forgotten styles interest me, and that includes everything from gypsy-jazz to, be-bop to ragtime. Even a lot of the popular music from the 30's and 40's really strikes a chord with me. There's usually so much emotion and expression and a depth in the music and performances. Thanks for this comment and for watching! : )

Just want to comment again - learned the interworld and the new innocence today from you. Already impressed some of my buddies. One thing I would like is to know what key these songs are in so I know exactly what’s going on, I’m going to assume B Minor, it goes to the 6th chord then which is major(the gadd9). You are the only teacher on RU-vid that teaches about Buckethead, and for that I thank you.
@LateNightLessons
@LateNightLessons 5 лет назад
Thank you so much - that's AWESOME! And yes, Interworld is in B Natural Minor. So if you were soloing over the Bm chord using the natural minor scale (or even a minor pentatonic) it would imply B Aeolian. Over the Gadd9 chord, B Aeolian would imply G Lydian (which sounds really cool). I would highly advise sticking with B Aeolian for soloing over the entire tune, and just allow the scale to drift between Aeolian and Lydian as the chords change. And be sure to target B's over the B minor chord and G's over the G chord, to really drive this sound/idea home. Sometimes it's cool to change scales when the chord progression changes, and other times it's interesting to stay put when the chord changes and allow the scale you're playing to take on a modal (or implied) sound when the chords change. Good luck and ROCK ON!

massive help this was, loved the b minor (add9) , though next one was big stretch for fingers BM (add9) & BM9, then got difficult after that second chord, awesome advice though, im just not that advanced physically in the fingers yet
@LateNightLessons
@LateNightLessons 5 лет назад
Thank you! Good luck with that stretch and just so you know - I just watched Buckethead in concert a few nights ago and when he played that song he didn't keep the entire chord fingering held down as he played. He just picked through it enough for the delay effect to kick in and then he only held partial shapes and rarely had the big stretch. It was like he only held down the last 1-2 notes or sometimes with the root instead of the entire chord. I'm not sure if he's always played it that way, but I was watching him closely and was surprised to notice it played that way. : )
@ChrisWilliamsRMWpigeon
@ChrisWilliamsRMWpigeon 5 лет назад
@@LateNightLessons you seen him live awesome, i cant play it in chord style, i have to leap fingers, but end up being a different style of whitewash, but interworld and the new innocence chord is impossible for me, unless i finger jump or single pick it, your really good and can have fun with it, great video
@LateNightLessons
@LateNightLessons 5 лет назад
Thank you and I guess that's what I was really saying with the way I noticed him playing it live. He was letting the delay do most of the work, so with that leap fingering strategy, you can play it with an authentic sound (without the stretch) as long as you have some delay bouncing those notes around too! : )

Walk in Loset at 1:52, what chords are that, i mean, i know what chords are, but sounds little particular.
@LateNightLessons
@LateNightLessons 5 лет назад
Hey! I was a little confused with this question (at first), but now I think I see what you're asking. You asked about the "1:52" section - which is where I was talking about Buckethead in concert - but at "11:52" I started talking about and playing augmented chords (which do have an unusual sound). Augmented chords and arpeggios feature a raised fifth (#5), which should sound weird to those that only know/use standard power chords. Imagine taking a basic power chord and altering the second note ("the fifth") a half-step higher., and that's exactly what we're doing here, but spelled out as a chord - featuring the 1(root)-3-#5 chord spelling/formula. Augmented chords/sounds can be found in plenty of classical, jazz, fusion, and metal music. I hope this helps!
@slunk1236
@slunk1236 5 лет назад
@@LateNightLessons Haha, i'm sorry. I was talking about a song called Walk in Loset, my question is about chords that sounds at 1:28. Another one is a song called "Is" from Pike 269, exactly at 4:27. I'm sure the chords are C#m-B-A. But for me, sounds "unusual". Maybe is a stupid question, but i love to transcribe his songs, but in a bunch of songs, the chords are a big problem.
@LateNightLessons
@LateNightLessons 5 лет назад
Now I see what you're asking (my bad dude). I thought you meant at 1:52 in my vid, not his tune. I'll give those songs a listen and see what's going on and thanks for the head's up with some new Buckethead chords to check out. He has so much music, it's really hard to keep track of it all. : )

Why are you calling it a Bm add9 chord instead of just calling it a Bm9 chord? Is it because of the missing minor seventh degree?
