Hey everyone! here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Nile Rodgers. I've had a number of requests to feature some of Nile's legendary music, not to mention plenty of requests to feature more funk, soul, R&B, and even disco music - and you'll find all of these styles (and more) hiding in this lesson.
The chord-based and rhythm guitar parts featured in this lesson include a number of classics from Nile's catalog of hits - including famous song selections by Chic, Sister Sledge, Mick Jagger, Norma Jean, and more! You'll find funky chord riffs and sections of songs such as Saturday, (Funny) Bone, Le Freak, Secrets, Thinking Of You, I Like Love, and more!
Needless to say, if you're a fan of Nile Rodgers legendary music, a player searching for more insight into funk/soul/R&B guitar chords, a player looking to improve their rhythm/comping ability, or maybe you're just curious what all the FUNK is about - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

I had the pleasure of meeting Nile when he came in to the studio to record a guitar part on an artist’s song, he brought the Hitmaker, and was such a a nice guy.

This guy reduced it to the max. But still, every single tone has his room to be heard. He learned me a lot about chord progression on guitar. The root is somewhere, the leading tone of course, and some funny/funky extencion that gives it the flavor. That's Jazz man........sorry for my english

Well done David; yet another fantastic lesson. I love his playing - particularly his own funky stuff. I like his work old school funk with Chic, but his more modern sound with Daft Punk is crazy good. I watched a clinic of his (a few years back), and he was talking about how other guitarists try to copy his style but most don’t get it right. His technique, which provides his unique sound is this: (paraphrasing) “I only play 3 strings at any one time. They are not always the same 3, in fact they can be any 3 string combination…” I saw Chic play at the Sydney Opera House in 2017 - one special night. thanks for the lessons David. I look forward to your next episode.

Killer as usual, Dave. Not really enamored by lists like the Rolling Stone rag deal but placing Nile Rodgers 7th is not unfair. Legend!

Spot on with this one Dave, as always. Please do the chords Paco de Lucia next, that would be a great lesson as a follow up the Flamenco chords lesson you did a few years back. Thank you.

There are so many great DISCO-FUNK incredible Musicians and guitar players (almost all came from jazz)in this great genre that is a shame that they are not as famous as Nile Rodgers is . I love many styles of music but my favourites are DISCO-FUNK and AORock. Check Change and BBQband with the incredible Davide Romani on bass and Paolo Gianolio on guitar or Ray Parker It's time to party now or Al McKay from Earth Wind and Fire and so on.

A lot of rock guitarists don't realize how much they're influenced by Niles guitar work. I first discovered that was true when I saw David Bowie live in the 80's.

sure would help if you put up a screen shot of tabs for the chords you’re highlighting and discussing. transcribing from spoken words and 2-D images is so clumsy and frustrating. otherwise… no notes 🎶🤭 that’s a jo, i say, that’s a joke son. gotta keep up a sense of humor. ba dum bump. ☮️ ❤🌏🌍🌎

Niles a schooled musician and has a classical & jazz background so im pretty sure he was conscious of what he was playing. Go watch a video of him talking about working on the song lets dance with bowie and he literally says he took davids initial folk sounding idea and did his thing with it harmonically and turned it into something different. He’s said bowie and him would talk about jazz so that right there according to him gave him free reign to draw upon his schooling and do something interesting with the chords on a pop song

For many decades now some have loved to say "Hendrix didn't know how to read music." And while that is likely true since Jimi himself said that, he absolutely did know a good amount of music theory. That's super clear to those of us who never feared learning how music is constructed. Jimi proved feel and theory are not mutually exclusive. In fact, it makes all musicians better able to express themselves and do their own thing, than they could otherwise.😊

I'm not bashing you, just trying to help a fellow guitarist. When people try to sell you the "easy method", that's a red flag. And the thing is, the normal method is not that hard. The hardest part is just learning just the 7 positions of C Major, so you know where all of the notes are everywhere on guitar. After that, it all starts to fall into place. Hint: everything is a whole step, except E to F & B to C are half steps. So sure you can do it, I gave you a "like".😊
