I have a story.. When I was a wee ladd, i used to hang out in a music store in Garland Tx.. In the early years they used to come through the store to check out the equipment visit the crazies who worked there.. I at the time was taking lessons there and had no idea what planet they were from.. Lol..Took me awhile to get it but a very good guitar monster in Dimebag, a very original player hidden in plain site!! Thanks for the analysis sir!

Hell Yeah! Dime and Pantera in general are one of my favourites for sure (from cowboys tho, the judas priest Glamtera is still pretty good but not really something other than 80s glam, for me atleast) Edit: after listening to some of pre cowboy's stuff i actually find their album "power metal" to be quite good. Very different from what they did afterwards,obviously, but pretty good overall.

Dime's personality was definitely a part of his playing. Got to meet him at one of their cowboys from hell shows and he was everything you described. A big music and guitar fan at heart. Very cool guy. A fun challenge is to come up with chord progressions in one position and you'll get close.

The last real guitar hero of iconic status who changed the way people played in his genre of music . Jimi then Eddie and then Dime. The three most complete influential rock guitarists to me . Masters of the instrument if there ever could be. Rhythm Lead and innovative tricks/techniques that everyone after them imitates but they can’t be duplicated .

Great call with the nod to the Police in the 9th chords in the Floods outro. I wonder a lot of times what Dimebag was thinking when he wrote the Floods outro and if this was his homage to Mr. Summers, or he was just thinking superficially and grabbed the riff for that song, or if he organically just incorporated that chord progression without the Police in mind at all (his genius separately arrived at the pleasing auditory quality of that chord)

From early-mid 80s. Vinnie Moore's work in Vicious Rumors. Some of his best imo. This dude Steve Mironovich from a NYC band called Cities was a ripper as well, somewhere between LeTekro and Rhoads maybe. Did an Lp with Twisters Sister's drummer, but the Ep before is where he shines.

Saw them play at the Marquee club in London on their only Cowboy's from Hell show [1990 I think] and still have a Plectrum from that show that dime gave me just before I did a stage dive...the whole show was recoded for Headbangers Ball and they played the whole CFH album plus 'Over and Out' as an encore. Great lesson David, Dime was way more than just a metal player. The Extremist came out in 1992 and Cowboys was in 1990 so I'm not sure he took that chord from Joe. Imagine Satch took it from Dime haha? This Love and Cemetery Gates are two of my favorites. Thanks for covering those two.
@LateNightLessons
@LateNightLessons 4 года назад
Thanks! As I mentioned in the video, Joe transcribed that song in his popular column in Guitar World magazine in 1987/1988, and Dimebag was an avid GW reader and also loved Joe's music, so it's safe to say he probably borrowed a few of those chords from Satch from when it was in the magazine. He admitted in numerous interviews that he learned (and stole) tons of things from guitar magazines, so it's actually quite possible. No harm, no foul

I would love to see something from another amazing guitarist who was taken from us way to early on in his career, and that's Dave Pritchard from Armored Saint! Awesome Guitar player, killer song writer,great licks & riffs. Another favorite player of mine. Well one of the many favorites. I saw Armored Saint & Metallica in the small city I live in. I actually got their drummer Gonzo's drumstick! I was getting in a fight with some a-hole that came running from up front by the stage with studded wrist bands on & elbowed my brother as he was running by. I think Gonzo saw what was going on because everybody moved away from us in a big circle. I was just about to kick the jerk in the head & a drumstick hit me in the side. So I bent over to pick it up & the fat prick I was going to beat was gone. But I ended up with Gonzo's drumstick, & I got to see 2 of the 3 greats I've seen just before they died. Because I saw Dave Pritchard with Armored Saint,but also saw Cliff Burton with Metallica early in the Master's tour. I also saw Ozzy Jan.19th 1981 in La Crosse,Wi. 2 months & a day before the Great Randy Rhoads was taken from us! Two of the better days of my life. Especially seeing Randy because I wasn't supposed to be there! But the friend of my uncle couldn't make it,so my uncle pulls up & asks if I want to go,I was in 8th grade & had skipped school that day. LOL Next day in school I accidentally pulled out my ticket stub instead of my tardy slip I had to have my teacher's sign. Teacher saw it,I just looked at him & smiled!

To clear up a little on early Pantera...... Dimebag wrote all of the first 3 albums between 14-17 years old. They only exist because his dad had a studio, otherwise theyd be long lost demos. The first album *WRITTEN WRITTEN WRITTEN* by Vinnie Dime Rex and *Philip* was CFH. Thats why they consider it their debut. Power Metal was written b4 Philip joined. Phil just quickly slapped lyrics on 7 songs so they could shop it to record labels. The glam thing is blown outta proportion because of the clothing but they were playing seek n destroy live in 1984 and Domination live in 1988. Hardly glam songs. They didnt change overnight, that is a MYTH. Dimebag was barely 21 when he started writing CFH so when people make fun of songs written 5-7 years earlier its simple math. The main song writers in Pantera (Phil & Dime) were younger so they didnt come into their own til the late 80s. When they wrote new material they dropped the old material. In fact many of the more casual fans dont realize CFH was almost entirely omitted from the setlist (just like the 80s material) post FBD as they all thought it was the weakest album. This is why a typical 15 song set list would usually feature 4 songs each from Vulgar, Driven, & Steel while playing just 3 songs total from CFH & TRENDKILL combined. Any Pantera/Priest fans would likely really enjoy the Power Metal album

I didn't know Satriani transcribed "Tears In The Rain" back in the 80's. I've always assumed Dime just went for a "Diary of a Madman" vibe in "The Sleep" because 'The Extremist' wasn't out by then. You might be right, he was a big fan, there's even a video of him playing "crushing day" live
@LateNightLessons
@LateNightLessons 4 года назад
Thanks! It's was in GW in '87 or '88 and Joe was talking about harmonizing harmonic minor scales and then they tabbed it out (but it didn't say "Tears in the Rain'). As far as the chords, it's really only the first two chord shapes, but they also both feature climbing diminished chords sections too. It's not exactly the same, but if you compare them there is a slight similarity in form. : )

As I mentioned in the video, Satriani transcribed that piece in Guitar World Magazine around 1987/1988 (long before The Extremist), and Dimebag was an avid GW reader. He admitted in interviews that he read guitar magazines and would borrow/steal things from them all the time. Also, if you compare The Sleep with Tears in the Rain, the first two chords are identical and the diminished movements that come later are similar. It's not exact, but there's enough of a similarity that I felt like pointing it out. : )
