Reb Beach was on the cover of GuitarWorld Magazine every other month... then Grunge hit and GuitarWorld started making fun of him. I was so disgusted I stopped reading the rag altogether
Guitar World features porn actresses wearing guitars whenever they put women on their covers. Guitar Player features REAL women guitarists on their covers! Now I hear Guitar World threw Winger under the bus?! They suck!
Pull is such an under appreciated album. Might be their best album and no one really knows about it. Reb’s still sounding and playing great on the new Black Swan album too.
I was happy he mentioned Vito here, too. Vito is without doubt a top 5 all time melodic guitarist, coupled with his unmistakable genius in technique/style.
Vito was one of the best of that era right up there with Eddie,mr scary, warren di martini etc.etcAmazing guitarist.sadly he doesn't play anymore or or put music out.
Just a month or so ago I leave a comment (on the Nuno post) about how much I learned about rhythm playing from Nuno and Reb and now... a "Chords of Winger" lesson? Are you stalking me, Dave? ;-) Reb, like Michael Schenker, is such an unappreciated genius. His solos are amazing but his rhythm playing is epic. I still play "Hungry", "Loosen Up" and "Black Magic" to warm up. Another great post. Stay safe everyone. Cheers.
Cutting loose was my favorite Guitar Video in the 80-90s, its so inspirational with feeling and very musically , compared to many other guitar videos in that aera that were mostly focused on technic and speed. Since then i'm a great fan of reb beach. Thanks for this video - lesson. Highly appreciated!
Right ! So much good stuff in cutting loose instructional ! That was Reb at his peak in my opinion from 88-93 Reb was right up there with vai and Satriani as far as innovative , exciting guitar playing his tapping is still incredible today and Monday has ever been able to replicate the smoothness he has when he taps . Very melodic player with plenty of fire thrown in too ! Great lesson as always Dave you rock man!
Ahhh! Dave, I've been telling people for years how Beavis and butt-head managed to financially ruin one of my favorite bands. Reb's rhythm guitar work is full of fire....just the right amount of theoretical mojo mixed with really powerful instinctive execution. Thanks for doing this, sir!
I thought it was funny when I first heard Twisted Sister's "Love is for suckers" album and was like wow they got a lot better at soloing until I found out that was actually Reb on some songs
I bought the self-titled debut on cassette while staying at my grandparents' house in Alabama back in 2008, along with the cassette of David Lee Roth's "Skyscraper". Bought "In The Heart of the Young" on CD at Half Price Books in 2009, followed by "Pull" in 2011. Saw them twice: once in 2014, the second time in 2016. Incredible live.
Not to mention he's the longest tenured Whitesnake guitar player in the bands history...which is saying something... "Down Incognito" from Pull was such a great tune...the video was filmed here in Tucson at the San Xavier Mission. Great stuff as always David!!
And plz analyze some / all songs from IV, thats when Kip studied orchestration etc. That is one of the worlds best albums and if u dare just mention a few bars from anything from ghosts. Always superior content, keep it up. Thanks from Sweden.
Winger like a lot of other ballad metal bands suffered short lives because the pop fans reject them for being too metal and the metalheads reject them for being too pop.Kip Winger didn't help their popularity by challenging another rocker publically to a ballet dance off-it was one of the most un-metal moments.sad part is many of these ballad metal bands very viable players
Great video. Reb is a killer guitarists. His rhythms are tricky. I love them though. Very cool stuff. He has a solo rock fusion album that is killer, and I'm not normally into that genre, personally. To each his own though. I think Tebs rhythms are what really are much more fun to play. Saw Winger open for Cinderella at an outdoor show. Bullet boys too at that show and it was loud and just killer. Loved that show. It was in like 91.
3:02 - Back in the day, when I received the GFTPM issue in the mail (shown on the left side of the picture), it had the transcription to Seventeen in it. I couldn't get it down because either the transcription was bad (I can now check) or I couldn't get the hand position right on the fretboard to play it. The song, Madalaine - no problem! But Seventeen seemed impossible to me at the time. Thanks for your video explaining it!
Love your channel dude!! Always loved the guitar in Seventeen but not the lyrics lol yes I've been a fan of Reb for many years and love his style, you do a great job of analyzing all these guitarists , keep up the great work !!
Seventeen for the song at the beginning and i love "In the heart of the young" album it's good from start to finish .thanks for the memories and the lesson
What a great "Chords of" episode Dave...always thought Winger was a great band. Not just because of Rebs soloing but his rhythm work is absolutely top shelf in the rock world. Thanks for this Dave, very cool👍
@@Scottocaster6668 Yeah the 3 for all is great! Akira has so many amazing riffs though, plus some great ones that are less known, like Love Kills from the 1992 album "Loudness".
Agreed I always thought that the fusion demos were some of his best work and Pull is probably Wingers best album start to finish although I do love the debut also the guitar on the debut is just classic Reb breaking into the scene and strutting his stuff
That would be a tough one ! Rebs tapping technique is completely unique to himself and I’ve never really seen any other players be able to replicate it and use it as a part of their phrasing and playing vocabulary the way Reb did . To me that’s what really set him apart from other players , was his ability to integrate it into his phrasing at any moment ... the smoothest tapper our there no doubt .. just pure smooth shred, so sweet sounding to my ears always loved Reb what a great player ! That being said David is absolutely incredible and he’s literally tackled so many great bands and guitarist and he makes it look so easy ! Thank you David for all you do in the music community, you’re so inspiring and educational. I’ve been a fan or your channel and work from the very beginning , rock on guys 🤘
Love your lessons, Reb Beach is a great guitarist. I would like a chord play, or 3 licks from Iron Maiden, Smith, Murray, Gers, very underated guitarists. Thanks
She's only 17! Great stuff! Love all that you are doing with these segments. Inspiring me to put the time in and improve my playing! Thank you for all that you share!
Thanks love that riff!, really like how you pay homage to the guitarists ability for the riffs they make!, Cutting Loose was awesome to see you explain it!! You Rock and so glad i found your vids!
I always wondered why Mike picked them to put on Stuart's shirt. To be fair, Metallica was using Kip's face as a dartboard 3 years before B&B came on the air, and the documentary (and the 'Nothing Else Matters' video) showing them doing that came out in '92, so was that Judge's inspiration for that? Or did he already think they were pansies? Or was it, maybe, one of the other writers for the show, and not Mike's doing at all?
Never really cared for Reb back in the day but thru his recent work with Joel Hoekstra in Whitesnake I have a new found appreciation for him. P.S - How about a 3 for all of Steve Gaines of Lynyrd Skynyrd? (Allen Collins would be cool as well).
Interestingly, Kip played the majority of acoustic gutters on “Pull”. Reb only added harmony or doubled acoustic parts on a few of the tunes. Kip was obviously inspired by acoustic guitars at the time as many of the songs on the album have significant, or even entire (“Who’s The One”), acoustic instrumentation. On a few tracks Reb is credited with playing acoustic, but on most tracks he’s credited with “All Electric Guitars”.
Really cool I didn't particularly listen to Winger back in the day, Shame as I missed out on some really cool rhythm stuff. I'll have look at some more Reb Beech stuff and have a go at learning some bits of this episode. listening to this made me think back to the stuff I was listening to at the time and Little angels immediately sprang to mind. Bruce John Dickinson would be a really cool guitarist for you to do a lesson on in my view. I remember spending hours tapping spread pentatonic things with a wah pedal trying to emulate his style! in fact I think that's why I bought one!
Dude…I love and appreciate your videos…I do. Fact. But…bro…I mean…really? You’re serious right now? Umm…Winger? My dude….for real? Actually I have a suggestion for the next video. How about CHORDS OF SONSEED. I love ya man but…my GOD. Dude………WINGER?
I caught a lot of shit over it, but because I played guitar back when those songs first came out when I was in jr high school, I knew Winger wasn't a joke like all my "It's Slayer or nothing" buddies had to say. I mean sure I loved Slayer and Metallica and Anthrax/Motorhead/Ozzy/etc, but I loved Winger's music too. I didn't give a damn what they thought. Reb is a wizard on the guitar, and the whole band was great. I admit Kip's dancing around stuff was sort of the "Rock Me Tonight" kiss of death, but anyway. I was also happy to hear you bring up Dangerous Toys! That first album was KILLER! Scott Dalhover is a PAINFULLY underrated, overlooked, even largely unknown guitarist from the end of the 80s/early 90s. I found him on RU-vid a few years ago under the name "MrTriskaidekaphobic" where he has a few guitar lessons from their old stuff. People should check him out. He's still a badass.
I'm a big Grateful Dead guy obviously, and a lot of people don't know that Winger's drummer Rod Morgenstein played with jazz fusion GD cover band Jazz Is Dead for awhile. He actually came in after Billy Cobham left! If you've never checked out Jazz Is Dead, do yourself a favor and check em out!
Brewster...there is an ‘80s band me and my buddies always liked and was hoping you could do a lesson about them...the band is ZEBRA...you’re the only dude cool enough to do it....rock on my brother!!!!
I like your description of "nooks and crannies" rhythm patterns. I definitely didn't give them the time of day when younger but I can really appreciate it these days. Thanks David
This is awesome! Honestly I could care less about solos or eruption, or finger tapping. None of this RU-vidrs are even touching the rhythm parts of the songs. It's so infuriating how underrated rhythm is! Like how does Eddie play rhythm?! Or George Lynch or Reb beach?! I feel like it's a lost artform writing those catchy melodic riffs.
Dude has some solid guitar from the day.. Plus my boi from the Dregs Rod Morganstien! I heard you mention Morganstien.. Sorry for the dup!! Not many know that about Rod..Lol
Hi David - Excellent video! Reb has always been one of my major influences, always loved his rhythm and lead playing. I had the opportunity to meet him for a few minutes at a Whitesnake / Scorpions show in Pennsylvania. Again, thanks for the content. Another rockin' video! 👍🎸🤘
I really love your videos! Especially because your going talking about a lot of underrated bands. Blind Revolution Mad is a great piece of music. I would even guess that Kip played the acoustic parts on it. There is a video on RU-vid where you can see Kip playing the parts to Spell I'm Under. I can't confirm it but it could be possible.. Thanks so much for work!
Love your channel! It’s a shame the brow beating that Winger took from Metallica! From a musicianship standpoint, there’s no comparison between those two bands! Every player for Winger is far superior to any player in Metallica! I love some of their recent albums and look forward to the new release they are working on. Hopefully it will be out this year or some time in 2023.
