My best attempt at a My Bloody Valentine impression. This progression contains a lot of nice jazzy chords that meander from one to another using subtle movement and voice leading

Some really pretty voicings here! That Am9(no5) shape is my jam; I've been using that particular shape (not necessarily that exact chord but just the shape itself) for awhile now, in a lot of my own material - since it's one of those really movable & nice open-sounding types. In my case, I tend to use it a lot as an Em7/G6 with the root up @ the 12th fret, with all those top strings ringing open. Very very vibey & lush. Pretty sure that I originally lifted it from a similar shape that Buckley was fond of, but modified slightly from his. Elizabeth Powell (Land of Talk) is also fond of throwing this & similar shapes around in some really lovely ways. Anyway, just wanna say that I dig the awesome vids - please do keep on sir! 😇

Love these chords, though some of the names could be more succinct. Gmaj7sus2 is just Gmaj9 and you don’t need to notate the absence of the 5th- you don’t do that for the last chord either. ✌️
@TrevorWongMusic
@TrevorWongMusic 2 года назад
Thanks! That's actually intentional. You might notice this in some of my other videos, but I treat the two as two very separate sounds. For me, when I call for a Maj7sus2 harmony, I don't see that particular sound as interchangable as Gmaj9. I want the very specific nuance of having that chord without that 3rd from the root. As for the Gmaj9no5, it's another very specific thing that goes on a case by case basis, in that scenario, I don't want the 5th present in the harmony and indicating that it has no5 is intentional for the aesthetic I want there. Basically, it's about how I hear those sounds in context, and what I would or wouldn't want in any accompanying part.
@danielsmit7072
@danielsmit7072 2 года назад
Thanks for the reply, it’s interesting to understand the sound that you’re trying to convey. I suppose from a functional harmony standpoint the Gmaj9 stands as the 3rd is implied unless you’re using the G as a dominant, and the same for the 5th as 5ths don’t really suggest tonality anyway, but that’s maybe a dated interpretation anyway 😂🤷‍♀️

Can someone explain to me why both Am9(no5) and Gadd9/B are the same shape, yet named completely different? Like, why isn't the 2nd chord Bm9(no5)? Thanks in advance
@francescopastore7316
@francescopastore7316 2 года назад
In short, when he moved that shape on the lowest 3 strings, he didn't move up the bottom three, so not all six notes were moved up. If all six were, then it would be the up a whole step. Well I'm super well versed but I'll give it a try and see if someone calls me out. For one, anytime you see a "/" in a chord that means the note following is the lowest note in the chord but not the root note of the chord making it an inversion. The Am9 chord (honestly not sure what the no5 is about tho) is minor because the note on A string 3rd fret (guitar knowledge would be helpful here) is the minor third in the key of A, automatically making it a minor chord. The 9 comes from the open B string. The Gadd9/B has a root note of G but G isn't at all the lowest note in pitch in the chord, B is, explaining the "/B." I'm honestly not quite sure why it isn't a D chord of some kind, Because D is the second lowest note and all the other notes are in the key of D. That would make it a Dadd9add6/B chord or something (I doubt that exists).
