A gente vê que o choro é extremamente complexo quando uma aula introdutória consegue ser tão rica, informativa e repleta de detalhes. Parabens pelo material, tem muita maestria aí! Aplausos

Henrique my friend, it's barely possible to tell you what a fantastic thing you've done for so many of us round the world. I mostly play reeds and guitar, learned so much from Nelson Faria's guitar course... but you've put it all together, plus the history.. you are so intelligent and explain so effortlessly with great passion. Thank you for 10,000 Kalpas. Cheers from Texas.

This is a very informative and engaging video, thanks a lot. Your are a great teacher! I grew up here in Australia playing Choro on the flute, accompanied by my step dad on guitar (though we are not Brazilian). I was excited that you mentioned Yamandu Costa, as I was so fortunate to play in a roda with him years back when he visited Melbourne to perform with some friends of my parents. I was very shy, being only 10 years old and not particularly skilled, but he was a really friendly, funny person and an amazing player. Choro just has a very special place in my heart!

Henrique, Muito obrigado, man. I am a pianist/accordanist/singer/songwriter in Nashville, Tn, USA, and I am a lover of various types of Brazilian music, including choro. I play with a choro band here sometimes-mostly accordion, but I'm working on adapting some of these classic choros for solo piano. This lecture has some great essential stuff in it. You are a really great teacher and pianist, with an infectious passion for this music and an easy, articulate way of explaining things. Thank you again, and if you're ever in Nashville, hit me up on FB, and I'll hip you to some great local music. thanks again!

@HenriqueEisenmann
@HenriqueEisenmann 4 года назад
Thank you! Don't worry about your hands! You can re-invent the chords and adapt them to your technique. Some people prefer to play octaves or closed chords, others prefer to play the bass note and then quickly jump to the chord (similar to a ragtime groove). By the way, I can only reach 10ths in certain keys....

Very good explanation, helps me a lot. Thank you! What you say about playing rubato but keeping control is the same thing as playing outside but keeping control for a jazz musician. I've tried to play good jazz solos for so many years. When I started playing choros I really learnt to play arpeggios for the first time.

Obrigado, being a jazz musician I find Choro absolutely fascinating and really wanted to learn more about it and these 2 videos have been absolutely fantastic! One thing I'm super curious about is why Choro is called Choro, since it means to cry and this music doesn't have that feeling to it (at least to my ears).
@HenriqueEisenmann
@HenriqueEisenmann 3 месяца назад
This is a great question. Back in the 1880s, the way locals musicians in Brazil would perform European ballroom music was considered “overly-dramatic”, “crying” over those melodies. The name stuck to it. I do agree with you, however, that the genre evolved into a happy bouncy and exciting music.

Hey Henrique, the clave type rhythm you are playing is a variation of a rhythm called telecoteco. It is considered to be a rhythmic key within samba in Rio de Janeiro. I’m a percussionist and this is what I have been taught by good sources. Another interesting samba rhythmic key worth learning if you do not know it, is partido alto. I love both these rhythmic keys.... Thinking of beginning piano and would like to learn Brazilian styles, as have been playing the percussion for many years. Great video
@HenriqueEisenmann
@HenriqueEisenmann Год назад
Hi James, you are absolutely right. The telecoteco is basically the reverse of the pattern I showed (if you play this pattern starting from the second bar, you get a telecoteco). The telecoteco is more common in later choro and samba. In the beginning of the century, syncopation wasn't yet very advanced; the influence of maxixe and polca were still strong, so most patterns started on the downbeat. You should totally play the piano! Good luck!!! Cancel Reply

Another excellent video! I had one question though. Didn't the tamborim rhythms (backwards and forward versions) originate in samba first, and then make their way to choro? That makes sense to me because 1) percussion in general came late to choro (there were decades of choro with no pandeiro or tamborim), and 2) because by the late 20s/ early 30s when teleco-teco had became the norm in samba, it was still only beginning to supersede the maxixe, polka, and waltz in choro and 3) because it is a "timeline" pattern (related to "clave") and makes sense that it would have originated in the more drum oriented black brazilian music first. What do you think?
@HenriqueEisenmann
@HenriqueEisenmann 3 года назад
Hi David, this is an excellent point, and you are absolutely right. These two forms of tamborim patterns are relatively "modern" if compared to early choro. The predecessor of these patterns is the maxixe groove, which can be heard in most recordings of Carmen Miranda, Sinhô, Noel Rosa, Nazareth and many more (there is a big gray area regarding the differences between maxixe and early samba). Most samba from the 20-30s still uses the maxixe pattern (16th-8th-16th qtr qtr). In my opinion, this is a beautiful example of how rhythms evolve and transform with time. If I had to play a historically accurate performance of some old choro, I'd probably use simpler rhythmic patterns.
