BALDWIN PARK: A Baldwin Park office CHP officer had conducted a traffic stop on the EB 10 freeway just west of Barranca. The vehicle and patrol car were stopped on the right shoulder. The officer had made contact with the driver and had just gone back inside the patrol vehicle when an SUV rear ended the patrol car at a high rate of speed. The impact sent the patrol car into the rear of the vehicle in front of him. An employee at a hotel across the street heard the impact and ran over to see what had occurred. The employee jumped the fence and went to the officer. The employee grabbed the police radio inside the patrol car and began requesting help. The employee called out and officer down with the location and began giving details to the dispatcher and responding officers. The injured officer was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries. The driver of the vehicle that struck the officer was also transported to a local hospital. No other injuries were reported. Preliminary information indicated the SUV a truck had collided which sent the SUV into the rear of the CHP patrol car. The investigation is ongoing.
