Chris. Sox Mgt weren't prepared to commit $300 million long-term to a player Mookie's size (5'9", 175 lbs) because they didn't think his numbers were sustainable. In the history of MLB, I can think of only 2 players about his size who have put up those numbers: Jimmy Wynn, the Toy Cannon; and Joe Morgan. Not many, and I would not be surprised if Bill James was brought in to help them with that decision to trade him. John Henry went to the GM, the CFO and the rest of the management group with this question: "Are we prepared to commit $300 million for the next 7-10 years to a player his size, when there hasn't been a player like that who has put up those numbers?"

You want the Red Sox to build the team around Betts? They already built the team around sign-stealing. Their scouting report does not show percentages of players, instead it shows images of signs from opposing catchers and Boston's percentages of predictions of pitches.
