@@TheDestructiveGiant but water isn't wet, water makes stuff wet, but water cannot make itself wet... wait no I'm going to stop here before I think about this too much
I love the way you made it Chris. For RoR, 2D game, the whole soundtrack feels more sharp than the RoR2 soundtrack, where the soundtrack feels more shady, textured, for a 3D game. RoR evolved with his second opus, as such as your soundtrack. This is insane, how your music is a solide base for RoR universe.
For the last couple years I've been talking about how badly i want a second risk of rain and how you HAVE to make the music for it again. I am so excited! It's all I've ever wanted!
I'll never stop coming back to this song. The vibe it gives off is pure music to my ears. In my opinion this is the best song in all of the ROR series.
For some reason out of all the songs in both ror and ror2, I keep coming back to this one, and I think I finally understand why. I find many tracks highlight the curiosity, danger and uncertainty that comes with exploring an unknown space, while also giving you this push to persevere through these tough conditions (and gives this awesome space sci-fi feel). The void DLC goes even further into this while giving a lot more of an emphasis on dread, a placid island of ignorance and who can fathom the soundless depths are two songs that immediately come to mind that feature these ideas (especially a placid island of ignorance, I fucking love that song). Instead of exploring these ideas further, 25.3°N 91.7°E goes a separate direction, instead emphasizing a much lighter tone, going into the excitement, wonder and fun that can come from this experience as well. It's almost soothing hearing those intro chords coming in, a far cry compared to something like the intro for into the doldrums (my favourite song from all of ror). The guitar in the intro gives such an ethereal feeling and the drums give this sense of curiosity, where they don't always hit on beat, or off beat. Aaaaaand of course the guitar coming in to do the ror motif always just feels so awesome (I'm sure it's used elsewhere in the song too, just this is definitely the most prominent example of where it is featured). The ror motif itself feels like it's written in a major key instead of its normal minor key, emphasizing this idea that this song is finding the good out of a rainy situation (the name of the song itself is coordinates to a place which holds the most rainfall annually, and although it may rain the most here, they can still find something good about it). The moment around 2:57 is especially special, it just gives you this crazy energetic, fun, explorable feeling. These are just my thoughts of course, I'm not trying to be super stuck-up and thinking I know everything, I just like how songs like this are able to grab people to the point where you start looking past the surface into the deeper-end of the song. This is just the rambling thoughts of an exhausted comp sci major taking a break to write this comment down. Much love towards Hopoo games for making this amazing game, and of course Chris for making one of the best soundtracks to any video game ever. I can't emphasize enough how much this game and Chris' music has influenced me, I am forever grateful :)
Even though Risk of Rain 2 has an awesome soundtrack, I often find myself listening to the original game's soundtrack, particularly this song. To say this is my favourite music piece from the original game would be an understatement. It brings a sense of exploration, the need to maintain hope in this somewhat desolate underwater area. Of course, the teleporter event then replaces it, usually with Double Rainbow. Thank you Chris for creating such an inspiring soundtrack.
Story time… once I had such a high fever from a cold that I was tripping balls. I can guarantee it’s not fun and I was panicking. All the sudden this song started play from my playlist and I closed my eyes, felt like I was sinking through a sea of stars! Thanks Chris!
I managed to pop Acrid in a run after getting enough drones to unlock the Engineer. An hour and half later, I was fighting Providence for the first time (And, to my surprise, I won. Somehow.) Unlocked 4 characters in that run!
I think I love the last 20 seconds the most, just that wonderful simple tone with the snapping and clapping, and it just sounds so .. cheerful, relaxing
i noticed that in the playlist has "the tropic of capricorn" and "tropic of cancer" in relative distance to each other as on earth... unless i'm over thinking things, this is a neat little easter egg i guess
I think I figured out why I like this OST more than Deadbolt. While this still follows the classic motif that most of the Risk of Rain soundtrack has, it takes its own spin on it much more than is the case in Deadbolt. In Deadbolt, the motif is _very_ in-your-face, and some of the tracks sound pretty similar to one another. In this one, the motif isn't really the _point_ of the song, but rather it's just what you use to _deliver_ the song, ya know?
Christ, this is my favorite song in the entire game. It's relaxing, it's upbeat, and most of all, it's just a damn good song. There are so many tracks where I think, "Hey, this is a great tune!" only to listen to it later outside of the game and find it lackluster. Not this one, this is goddamn great. I think my icon speaks for my love of the game enough.
Chris, there is one thing about the game i don't understand. Why is it called "Risk of Rain", the difficulty levels are called as rain types, and even those coordinates lead to a wettest place on Earth, but there is only one rain on the last lokation, which is also named "Risk of Rain"? I would name it "An Astronaut Guy Who Kills Aliens On Far Away Planet With Epic Background And With The Best Soundtrack I Have Ever Heard", or AGKAOFAPEBBSIHEH for short. I know, this name sucks, but at least it associates with the game's content.
It's a good title and it would solve one of the main issues with the current title, which is that my google alert for it mostly returns weather reports. But it would technically have to be "you" instead of "I". But there actually is a very specific reason for the title which, as far as I know, has not yet been discovered (it has not to do with the music titles which are 100% my own inventions and have nothing to do with the game, except the obvious relation to rain)...
If i remember correctly it was kinda like a metaphor for the game itself like sometimes you only know that something might happen. In the same way that the game is rng. or something like that that the developer said
because of, for example, the rising difficulty, could be seen as raining, and storms. as you may know, most rain starts off as a light drizzle then turns into a full-on storm in some cases
The title of this piece of music is appropriate in my mind. To me, this music definitely reminds me of water/rain/tranquility/warm misty morning in a forest/the coast of a white sand beach with turquoise waters/serenity and calmness/other soft sounding adjectives. I get the same feeling when I listen to the theme music that plays when you reach Manaan in KOTOR I. Excellent job on composition and performance, by the way! I understand you were going through some rough times when you created it. I wonder, was making all of this music at all therapeutic for you?
Thank you so much for the kind words! Well, "hard times" like all people in the western world face nowadays, which is to say not particularly hard by the rest of the world's standards! But I must say, while some sort of fulfilling and creative work is an absolute necessity for a healthy life, the true therapy for me is the time I dedicate to learn more about the world around me, be it through art and books (I read constantly), long walks, and human interaction. I have for years now made a ritual out of walking to a cafe in the morning and reading for a couple of hours, often chatting up random strangers. It's something that no therapy in the world could ever replace, at least not for me. :)
Hey, first world problems are still problems :P. I feel the same way, though. I play bass guitar and, while I find that rewarding in and of itself, sometimes it's the small things in life and enjoyable routines I practice that feel the most therapeutic. Anyway, I hope you keep up the great work. Some of my favourite game soundtracks these days are from indie games. This is definitely no exception! :)
I absolutely love this track, but sadly when the music plays in the level in the game you can barely hear it because of all of the damage sounds and noises and explosions. But if you can hear it it's very relaxing and takes some stress off your shoulders. :) love your music man!
Damn, This is the second time i listen to the whole playlist and now i HAVE to play that game again. Thanks for those tunes, mr Christodoulou, RoR wouldn't be the same without them.
Goddammit. I spent $25 on Risk of Rain 2 because of your brilliant OST (was not disappointed) and now you're gonna make me buy the first game too? I hope they're paying you well.
i honestly kinda love the break of pace from dread and agony and sick synth riffs to a more serene peaceful tracks, it really fleshes out your runs and kinda adds variety, more games should have that contrast
i just beat this game for the first time a few minutes ago. idk how i never realized how good this was until i got to sunken tomb again. great game, better sequel, but equally good soundtrack
This track feels heavenly... At 0:29 , I just feel like I'm floating around my room.. I just get into this sort of feeling that I am just floating around space. Time stops, and only this amazing song remains. Good work, with ALL of these. I love all this so much ^-^ thanks for making this amazing work c:
Hey, this may sound like a moronic question... but what sort of software do you use to make your music? Your music is amazing and i'd love to make some of my own as a side hobby!
Chris Christodoulou Hey, sorry for the long response, but i was being extremely stupid to the highest degree when i asked this question, but instead of explaining the reasons as to why it was so stupid, i'm just going to say that i've found what I was looking for. But thank you for taking the time to answer my question, and er, sorry for being dumb :D
Wow! Sounds wonderful. Remember playing this games free demo a while ago, and I could totally see this in the first area, or maybe in the snow area. Congrats on getting another commission! I hope one day I'll be able to be as lucky as you, and get by by just making music.
love going back to this, while I wait for Risk of Rain Returns I vibe to this. dunno if you still reply to comments but will the tracks of the original Risk of Rain be remixed or remastered?
Now that I have finished the game a few days ago, is there any way to also get the song of the final level and the one from the temple of the elders? Those songs sadly aren't included on the Bandcamp purchase it seems, or is there just the preview missing for these two songs? I really loved the temple theme and want to listen to it again
Just bought and listened through the album, and I actually was mistaken, Coalescence and Arctic Oscillation (Temple Theme) are actually in it If you didn't know which song belongs to which level, how does the creation process actually work? Do you get to look at the levels before composing the tracks? Or do you just get brief descriptions of how the atmosphere of each track should be like? Which method do you think is better?
Hi Chris! I love this track so much! Its one of my most favourite. I would like to know what were your most used synths on the ROR1 album along with the epic Omnisphere lead ofcourse! And maybe more specifically the beginning chords of this track and the first arpeggios at the beginning of Arctic Oscillation. Such beautiful sounds! Much love from Slovakia
The vast majority of what you hear comes from Omnisphere, for the very simple reason that I could not afford having several soft-synths at the time. Some of the chiptune sounds come from Plogue Chipsounds and most Electric Pianos comes from Lounge Lizards. Drums are from Battery 3 & 4.
@@AstronautDown Thank you so much ! Omnisphere is super cool ! I tried remaking the signature ROR lead by following your tutorial. I tried to make it as close as possible and then play some leads like on ''Monsoon''. It was great fun! I have really enjoyed it ! Will you please make some similar sound design tutorials in the future ? :D
When you do the Album Commentary for this track, and you get into the time signature, and how its in 11/8 why did you stop? The "way too geeky stuff" is interesting to hear your talk about, being a musician myself. :P
Norhaklai is the wettest place on earth. The album includes wet things. Tropic. Risk of rain. Surface tension (of the water?). Double rainbows. Song of autumn, autumn being the wet season. Monsoon. Is the price right?
Hey, I hope you don't mind asking, but would you have a problem if I were to use some of your music as background audio in a video I'm currently planning on uploading to RU-vid? I'll be crediting you on-screen with a pop up and a link to each song used as well as your website or bandcamp, whichever you prefer.
Actually I do mind. But if you want a personalized rejection you should email me with details. For the record, email is the only way to go for such things because a) I could miss this comment very easily, and b) saying yes to this question on a RU-vid comment would be blanket permission to anyone reading this.
I frekin love your work , and by the way i put the coordinates into Google maps, and the coordinates are near a place called Sa-i-Mika Park in china. any reason?
