Thanks to E-G Media for providing this fantastic video in collaboration for our RailfanFest 2021 event. Chris Eden-Green takes a look at Terrier Locomotives for this Railfan Fest 2021 feature, in partnership with the Kent & East Sussex Railway in England. Chris produces a great range of DVDs on steam locomotives and is well known on RU-vid for his 'SLIP' videos and regular 'Gauge the Issue' episodes.

Terriers are great. They're small, perfectly proportioned, easy to maintain, fairly powerful, and very customisable in terms of livery and design. I love seeing the original A1 in either Improved Engine Green or the even better Marsh Umber. I would love to see one repainted into LSWR green.

This is why Stepney is one of my favourite characters in the Thomas franchise. I would love to see him return in the revival era and to see him bring more attention to railway preservation.

Terrier firebox doors are so low I almost wonder if a few poor firemen didn't make specialized rakes for moving coal from the bunker to the firebox

Personally I prefer The Lone Ranger Chris. The film is super underrated; it's really good in spite of how badly it flopped and how people seemingly had it in before it even released. The train climax is phoenominal and my vote for the best train chase in cinema.

Co-evolved with the "F" that achieved a similar TE on the narrow-gauge for 20 tons in working order. Trundle along at a good clip, prodigious pullers, climb like a cat.

I miss Terriers being in Marsh Umber so much. It’s a really lovely livery but there’s currently no locos wearing it.

We can cross our fingers that the new-build H2 will eventually get painted in the livery. It’s going to be in BR Black when finished, but knowing the Bluebell I’d be shocked if it gets kept in that livery.

The NSWGR for a long time copied a lot of British steam locomotive designs, But over time they started copying the Americans, and in the 1950s they bought 20 mikado type steam locomotives from Baldwin .

Disclaimer: Clueless Yankee here. The space constraints and the rising issue of coal supply made me think: Is there any serious discussion of converting preserved locos to oil firing?

I’m from your part of the world, but I know more about British locos tan American locos 😂. Basically over the UK, coal is used still in preservation because on the railways over there steam locomotives never burned oil, making oil burning unauthentic, plus welsh coal is available over there, and it burns really well, and is easy to find.

@@modelrailfan37 Oh definitely, it mainly came to mind because I've been watching the Talyllyn's struggles with keeping a consistent source of coal now that their welsh supplier is closing down

@@valritz1489 ya for sure, and sorry, I only realized now that you wrote that comment a year ago… It would make sense to an extent though if the railways did switch to oil, though I think it will be a long time before we see that in the UK
