Art Deco's Impact on Railroads

The art-style known as "Art Deco" has proved to be a catalyst and icon of the 1920s and 1930s. Noted for its geometric patterns, streamlined appearance, and evoking a feeling of efficiency, luxury, modernism, and futurism. Everything from architecture, fashion, automobiles, and railroads were affected by art deco's vast popularity. Art Deco in the 1930s would lead to another style known as Art or Streamline Moderne resulting in some of the finest streamlined locomotives and trains in the world. While Art Deco has since fallen out of style, it's influence could be found in mid 20th century minimalist and modernist art and eventually the modern day world of streamlined high speed trains. In this video I'll be going over how Art Deco managed to influence the world's railways and their design choices ranging from advertising and promotional material, locomotives, rolling stock, and infrastructure.

Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed! I’d like to make a correction though, the Mercury and Dreyfuss Hudsons were designed by Henry Dreyfuss, not Raymond Loewy, not sure what I was thinking at the time but I probably was getting too ahead of myself knowing I was gonna talk about him later in the script, sorry about this! 2024 UPDATE: Thank you for the continued support! I'm very happy to see this is one of my most popular videos! After 3 years of it being up, I still look back on it positively. However, I do recognize in retrospect the click sound effect being annoying and repetitive, and I could've displayed things in a more varied and visually interesting manner. I was still experimenting with my editing style and the sound mixing, but I've since improved on those issues with my current videos. Regardless, I appreciate all the constructive feedback, and I'm glad to see all the people who appreciate art deco out there.

The Cincinnati Amtrak station is located in what was once THE MEN'S SMOKING ROOM adjacent to the men's room of the original station. I note from the depiction that there were at least 16 tracks coming through that Cincinnati station. A plaque on the wall recites a huge number of trains, like over 200, stopping in Cincinnati during the war years. Now there's one westbound Amtrak at like 1:00 AM, and an employee leads you a long distance from that Men's Lounge to the train.

To me the Cincinnati Union Station is the epitome of Art Deco especially with it's half dome massing. The interior arch is so precise you can stand at one end and whisper and someone standing at the other end will hear tou. It now houses a couple of museums and is wonderfully preserved. Nearby Carew Tower downtown is also one of the most outstanding Art Deco buildings I've ever seen. I wish trains would go back to at least streamline moderne, would love art deco even more. The subject is of great interest and fascination, the video is full of rare and beautiful images, yet many of them - especially the posters - cannot be fully enjoyed because of the too fast timing.

@Railfan 765 It's a personal thing. I love how UK steam locos look, but US definitely beats it out of the water in terms of power.
@muir8009

@Railfan 765 it's all a little arbitrary though, every railway built whatever their particular needs were, so no better or no worse really for any country: one can like the style of a countries' typical construction but there's so many variables. Fairly obviously none of the CME's of any of the railway companies world wide were too precious and were at great pains to try and absorb any influences from anywhere in the world

Outstanding video! I would have loved more content on the GG1 (the quintessential art deco locomotive, in my book), but given the depth and breadth of everything you’ve covered, it’s very hard to complain. Exceptional work.
