This is not a good representation of doctor doom. Doctor doom is one of the best characters that has not had a good representation on screen. Think of a cross between doctor strange, Ironman, and Thanos. This is the reason people did not like this movie. The mask is iconic and should be his face pretty much all the time. Doom should have a much greater presence and almost be the protagonist.
Since I'm 5 hours behind, other people may have commented on this but this film was not part of the MCU the same way the Toby McGuire and Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movies weren't. The rights were owned by a different company so it's a stand-alone film. After the introduction of the Multiverse, this can now be considered just another universe.
His Johnny is perfect. Exactly like he is in the comics. His Cap to me always felt like someone young playing dress up with grown up clothes. Like he is cosplaying as Cap. Cap in the comics is more manly.
A classic Gamer/Comic Book Culture comedy comic strip Dork Tower has the main character Matt have to be restrained by his buddies from giving little kids a pop culture history lecture every time he hears them say: "FANTASTIC FOUR ARE A RIP OFF OF THE INCREDIBLES!"
@ghostspider2056 That's what i thought when i saw the INCREDIBLES , Fantastic Four did of course come before that as it was MARVEL's first superhero family , i jumping ahead of myself a bit since i missed the first part of the premiere i'll go back finish it later and post another comment i really enjoy Mary's reactions CHEERS .
People didn't like it because the plot wasn't that strong. These movies are based on books/comics, and people don't like it when things are taken so far that they are not as recognizable as the source material or a good plot. The mcu with Captain America was in disney ownership. These marvel characters, along with a few, are fox. That's what separated the characters, such as the torch and captain America. Disney bought them out and made him captain America instead. Remember, people have been paying thousands and supporting characters before the 60s. Passing on the love of the content.
@@dvass7253 He doesn't look like Grimm at all. He's supposed to be a good looking man in great shape. Chiklis turning into the Thing is a lateral move.
Fox hired him to play Torch / Johnny and then Marvel hired him to play Captain America. They were 2 different companies who simply had film rights for the respective properties.
@MaryCherryOfficial Because you wondered about where this is in the MCU; you have to realize that when this film came out in 2005, there was no MCU. Marvel had their comic book properties split between several film studios. - 20th Century Fox had X-Men, Daredevil, and Fantastic Four - Universal had The Incredible Hulk; in large part because they obtained the rights back in the 70’s to make The Incredible Hulk TV Series with Bill Bixby & Lou Ferrigno. - Columbia Pictures had Spider-Man - New Line Cinema had Blade It wasn’t until 2007, when Marvel; under Kevin Fiege had the idea of building “a universe” where each story intersects and connects with each other. The rest is history.
@@bystandah9626 Feige was an associate & executive producer on the Spider-Man sequels: Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007). Avi Arad was the main producer on most of these films, except on the X-Men films; they were produced by Lauren Shuler-Donner; wife of Richard Donner (Superman, Lethal Weapon), and Ralph Winter (Star Trek III-VI).
It’s the multiverse, the same way Peter Parker can look different in 3 different universes, multiple characters throughout the multiverse can look like chris evans
Michael Chicklus is the best part of the movie for me. He wanted to play Ben Grimm ever since he was a child. I thought he was great. Very comic accurate. The step father, Elisha, mentions is the villain known as the Puppet Master. He is a sculptor that can control people with the little statues he makes.
I remember the outcry when Chris Evans was cast as Captain America, specifically because of this role. They saw him as Johnny and felt he would be absolutely wrong and awful as Cap. Turned out actors can... act differently.
@@sensaiuriah5440 His weight and age were never an issue. When he was cast as Cap back in the day, everyone was just complaining that he had already played Johnny Storm, and played him very well. And in general up to that point, Chris Evans had portrayed characters that were all kinda brash and douchey; very much not a Steve Rogers.
I never could accept him as Cap. He did well but I always felt he was too boyish for the role. Cap in the comics is very much a man's man. And he is physically much bigger than Chris Evans.
Fun fact: Johnny isn’t the first Human Torch, the original was an android of the same name and powers during WW2 who worked alongside Captain America and other superheroes. One of the later heroes was also Toro, another hero with the same fire abilities as both Human Torches, his father also worked for the creator of the aforementioned android.
Chris Evans nailed his role as Johnny. I never knew he was Human Torch till after I was introduced to him as old fashioned boy scout Captain America, so seeing him act like a mischievous punk was an experience for me
I grew up only knowing him as that Cool Kid from Fantastic Four who wanted all the spotlight from the rest of his family 😂 I was unsure of him as Cap, but now I love Captain America because of Chris Evans. Total Opposite of your Experience bro haha
One reason for this movie to be criticised was for the portrayal of Dr Doom. It's not the actor's fault, it's because it was not at all comic accurate. Dr Doom along with Magneto are the most popular and fan favourite supervillains in Marvel Comics. Only Magneto got justice in film media.
@@TheRawrnstuff No bro, Green Goblin is super popular especially after his appearance in No Way Home. But that's just happened in the current times. Dr Doom has a huge fan following since his debut in comics regardless of any age. Moreover he is the main character/antagonist of marvel's most popular story line. The Secret Wars. And let's not forget the latest announcement about Dr Doom.
@@Crim50nDynam0 Yeah but that's kinda the point. The popularity of comic book characters has _exploded_ "in the current times". It's insincere to claim "X *is* more popular than Y" based on how things were several decades ago. If you include the fans that the movies have brought in, the relative popularity of the characters we haven't really seen recently _must_ have gone down. You can't convince me the Fantastic 4 is more popular than Spider-Man without some serious data to back that claim up. Don't get me wrong, I like Dr. Doom more than I like Green Goblin, but my likes don't determine what is more popular universally. And Magneto certainly isn't the only villain that has been done justice to. Even Ultron was a lot more interesting character in the MCU than in the comics.
@@TheRawrnstuff Doom is way more popular than Green Goblin. Doom has had two successful comic series of his own. Doom is who Marvel turns to for a big bad in their major crossover stories. Darth Vader is a rip off of Doom.
It was also because FF comics when Kirby did them were the most cosmic epic stories and this was more low brow(I mean I get it, they didn't want to spend too much money right off the bat)
36:21 I understand what you were saying and respect your opinion, but they did change the name of invisible girl to invisible woman in the comics, but The names of the Fantastic Four, like Mr.Fantastic, Human Torch, and the Thing, might seem cheesy or outdated to modern audiences. However, these names were chosen by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the 1960s, a time when comic books were more lighthearted and focused on sci-fi and adventure. The names reflect the characters' powers and personalities: • Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards) is a nod to his incredible stretching abilities and his leadership role. • Human Torch (Johnny Storm) references his ability to generate flames from his body. • The Thing (Ben Grimm) is a self-deprecating name, as he struggles with his new, rock-like appearance. These names have become iconic and are deeply rooted in comic book history. They might not be as edgy or modern as some superhero names today, but they evoke a sense of nostalgia and classic heroism. the names into context and show that they were chosen to reflect the characters' powers and personalities, even if they might seem old-fashioned now.
Technically, this isn't a "modern" audience, it's a "digital" audience. The Modern Age ended when the internet took over and then it became the Digital Age. The names of the Fantastic 4 characters came out in the Modern Age so it's considered outdated by Digital Audiences. 😉😉
4:15 I understand the confusion. This was years before Chris Evans played the role of Captain America. Also, this movie isn't set in the MCU. This is just a Marvel movie. The MCU didn't start until 2008 with the first Iron Man film. Hope this makes sense! 🙏🏽💪
Chris Evans played 4 comic book characters, Steve Rogers (Captain America) and Johnny Storm (Human Torch) from Marvel, Jensen from the DC Comic The Losers, and Lucas Lee in Scott Pilgrim vs the World.
This was pre-MCU and the rights to the Fantastic Four was with 20th Century Fox at the time. Marvel Studios cast Chris Evans later on as Captain America when they started doing their own movies (the current MCU). Either way, Chris did a good job with both roles. Disney has since bought both Marvel and Fox so the rights to the Fantastic Four are back with Marvel/Disney.
Ben turned into an orange rock monster who has no ears, only four fingers on each hand, same count as his toes but still had normal teeth and its weird that he doesnt have a belly button?? 😂
Fans take issue with how Dr. Doom is inaccurately portrayed here. He’s actually a dictator of a fictional country called Latvaria, he excels in many talents, especially science & magic arts. He wasn’t on the space station with the Four, he has his own origin from being born to gypsies and rising to become ruler of his country, but still has a rivalry with Reed Richards. Doom accidentally damaged his face because he put his metal mask on while it was still hot. Doom genuinely believes he can save all the world’s problems if he’s the one ruling all of it, but his ego and perfectionist keep getting in the way. Another of his goals is also to rescue his gypsie mother from hell.
I hope Marvel can adapt this in the future AND find a good Romani actor to play him, but it doesn’t look like that’s happening for a while now, if ever. 😔
29:52 In the comics, the reason Doctor Doom where his mask because he has a scar on his face. To block the memory of his failure. Also, it symbolizes that he's closing himself off from humanity! My man Doctor Doom!!!!! 🙏🏽💪
Not really his first comic-book creation. lol The FF came out in 1961. Stan had created many comic-book characters by then. He started writing comics and creating characters around 1939. The FF was just the first comic from the new Marvel Comics universe of heroes in 1961(but not the first comic under "Marvel Comics" that was Journey into Mystery #69).
Fun fact: *Chris Evans,* first played *Johnny Storm/The Human Torch* in the *2 films* of *FANTASTIC 4 (2005)* & *FANTASTIC 4: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER (2007),* before he played *Steve Rogers/Captain America* in the *1st film* of *CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER (2011).*
Editor REALLY should have told Mary to finish the Blade movies especially Blade Trinity starring Ryan Reynolds. I liked Chris Evans so much in this role it took me until The Winter Soldier to buy him as cap. 💯❤
Fox had the rights to this with X-Men. So when marvel started the cinematic universe, they couldn't do anything with these characters. Two different companies overall at the time. Now Disney owns both, they are under same house again.
This movie was definitely an interesting adaptation of Marvel’s first superhero family. And it would have been the best superhero movie of the year… if Batman Begins didn’t premiere around the same summer. Whoopsies! 😅
This movie was made before Marvel Movies was a thing. In a time when all those kinds of movies were pretty much stand alone efforts. And there was certainly no planned story arc of any kind from one movie to another.
0:10 😮 MARY!! I am shocked! SHOCKED!! I tell you...well not that shocked. So Evans was cast as Captain America after the Marvel movies got rebrand with Iron-Man. Kevin feige worked on the Marvel movies from X-Men to Fantastic Four so he had worked with Evans before & thought that his normal persona was a perfect fit for Captain America.
The Fantastic 4 is a Marvel production, but the MCU wasn't a thing at the time. They were just busy making a movie on it's own merit, not trying to make a whole universe. And believe me, I was skeptical when they cast Chris Evans as Captain America after he was Human Torch, but he surprised me. One thing people didn't like was the portrayal of Dr. Doom, which is his Supervillain name. Dr. Doom is the RULER of the fictional European country, Latveria, and he commands science AND magic as is superpowers. He attended college with Reed but an accident caused his face to get burned and he resented Reed ever since, swearing to always prove himself better than Reed. Dr. Doom was Darth Vader before Darth Vader even existed.
This film is very much a modernized take on the F4 origin story but still does an okay job at translating it into the 2000s. Beginning with Fantastic Four #1 (1961) the F4 launched into Space during an experimental space flight for the government. At the last minute the government cancelled the flight so Reed, pilot Ben Grimm, along with Susan Storm, and her brother, Johnny Storm sneaked into the launch site at night and blasted off into space. in space they were exposed to cosmic rays, which gave them super human powers and abilities, crash landing back on earth where they discovered their new powers. Very much themed around space travel and the Space Race of the 1960s. They become public figures as one of the few hero teams who's real identify are known to the public. For the film they changed it to a Space Station owned by Doom with the overall origin very much centred around Victor Von Doom unlike the comics. Doom himself is heavily altered for this movie depicting him as a CEO of a major organization who's who gained the power to absorb and manipulate electricity. in the comics Doom and Reed were rivals in college. He was disfigured at the hands of his own machine, though the disfigure was very minor but to Doom it made him "imperfect". He returned to his home country of Latveria and became their dictator, crafting an iron man like suit covered by a green robe and a mask that hides his face. His powers come from the suit itself rather than from some kind of inner power caused by an accident. He also ventures into magic as well but most of the time he's more Science based. So Doom was not apart of the accident that gave the F4 their powers in the comics and there's zero reason to really connect him to any of that. I'm super excited for Fantastic Four: Next Steps releasing next year. Looks to fully embrace the 1960s Space Age themes of the F4 so that's super exciting.
He actually did better against the F4 in this movie than the comics. And this is the best Dr. Doom in any of the live action versions(yes Im including the RDJ version).
Chris Evans was also in a DC comics movie called the Losers. Let's just say before he was the Capt, he was alot of other heroes before 1 finally stuck.
The Fantastic 4 is the first marvel family that Stan Lee ever made along with Spiderman joining once or twice. Chris as Johnny is my fav & Dr Doom owns a whole country in the comics & other iterations he has diplomatic immunity
@@Narutoanime16g I think that was Peter's choice because he didn't have his mask on hand. But still a top Spidey FF moment 👍 Reed is also the one who helped diagnose the sonic weakness of the symbiote suits with Peter. I don't know if that's going to be part of Secret War, but I'm hoping 🤞
@@Narutoanime16g This was during his Spider-man's Identity Crisis story arc. The storyline where Spider-Man was formed for the murder of a small-time crook and thus had to go into hiding. But people wanted to still fight crime so he creates four other costumes with different crime-fighting personae in order to stay under the radar. Why not just create a single new costume? Well it would be too suspicious if a single hero appeared just after the disappearance of Spider-Man so Peter created the illusion that a whole team of hero's appeared who in reality was just Peter Parker. I'm pretty sure Peter went to the F4 right away during the start of this story but couldn't wear his Spier-Man as he was wanted. So they gave him a F4 suit but had no masks to give as they don't hide their identities. So Peter grabbed a bag and used it as a mask.
"How do they stick onto the board like that" lmao F4 is often forgotten, a hidden gem. These early Marvel movies have something unique in their style and presentation, or maybe its just the early 2000s feel.
Robert Downey Jr was recently confirmed to be cast as Doctor Doom in the MCU. He joins Chris Evans among others in playing multiple Marvel roles, MCU or not.
@GrimmEnt. Nah, he's confirmed Victor von doom. If anything, he's a dr doom variant, after all he was one the audition actors for dr doom for this movie
@@anthonylopez8682 So he's playing Victor Von Doom with no explanation for why he looks like Tony Stark? That's dumbest idea ever. That's why I'm not a Marvel fan they do stupid sh** like that in the comics.
Fun fact, the fantastic fours powers are based on their personallities. Mr. Fantastic always reaching for the stars, invisible girl is shy, the thing always putting up a hard shell t defend him.self, and human torch is always a hot head.
16:55 Stan Lee isn't just showing up for the sake of a cameo. He's playing an actual character he created during the late 1950s with Dan DeCarlo, who was then incorporated into the Fantastic Four comics during his time working with Jack Kirby in the 1960s. Meet Willie Lumpkin, US Postal worker and the regular mailperson for the FF at the Baxter Building.
Fantastic Four is a Marvel film, but not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that includes Iron Man, Thor and of course, Captain America. This movie is not set in the same universe as those other movies. A new Fantastic Four film has been announced, which will take place within the MCU, in the same universe and Chris Evans Captain America. A different actor will be playing the role of Johnny Storm.
The MCU didn't existed yet, so this is not part of the MCU. But the MCU Fantastic Four will come at July 25, 2025 and the cast are amazing. Pedro Pascal is Reed Richards Vanessa Kirby is Sue Storm Joseph Quinn is Johnny Storm Ebon Moss Bachrach is Ben Grimm Ralph Ineson is Galactus Julia Garner is the female version of the silver surfer, Shalla-Bal Paul Walter Hauser John Malkovich Natasha Lyonne The surprising actor for Victor Von Doom/ Dr.Doom is RDJ This take place in a alternate universe where everything is the futuristic 60's style world, so it is not our MCU universe but they will come to our MCU universe in the 2 new Avengers movies Doomsday and Secret Wars
It's kind of interesting how this movie, for all its flaws, put more effort into Reed Richards' stretching powers than the MCU did with him in Multiverse of Madness or Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel, even though she has more or less the same powers in the comics. I hope they make the effort in their own Fantastic Four movie
This Fantastic Four movie is one of a kind, no one can beat this movie but word has it that Marvel is planning to introduce the Fantastic Four into the MCU.
No one can beat this movie? Shit, even back in the day people were meh on this and the sequel. The cast itself was fine (tho Jessica Alba was the weak link), but they movies and stories around them were pretty wack.
do you see the clever foreshadowing in this movie? 1. doom says reed always stretching referring his power which he gets later 2. during spaceship proposal scene doom says 4 little words can change their life immediately he said 'the clouds are approaching' which are four words and it literally changed their lives
In the comics Susan Storm the Invisible Woman is a blonde. Every iteration so far in the movies has also been a blonde. Roger Corman's Fantastic Four (1994) - Rebecca Staab, Jessica Alba in Fantastic Four (2005) and Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) and Kate Mara in Josh Trank's Fantastic Four (2015). Plus Vanessa Kirby in Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) 😂 In the U.S. Jiffy Pop is a pan of popcorn kernels that you heat over a stove causing the kernels to pop. 😂 Doctor Doom's most distinctive feature is his iron mask which he uses to hide his disfigured face. 😮
I was so praying they would keep her blonde in the 2025 remake. I'm still upset they got rid of redheaded Mary Jane. Don't get me wrong Zendaya is a talented actress but Mary Jane was always the gorgeous redhead girl next door I grew up reading about in the comics.
I loved this comic when I was a kid! I thought that the casting was epic, too! Chris Evans totally knocked it out of the park as Johnny Storm! The best scene for me was when Johnny comes out of the MX show and has a dude-where's-my-car moment, followed by his former Porsche rolling in like a very large crumpled ball of aluminum foil, curtesy of the Thing! I loved this movie, and I can't wait til they do an MCU Fantastic 4 movie!
This is the second film adaptation of the Fantastic Four. The first one was never released, but bootleg copies can be found of the film on the Internet.
Mary, it's NOT the same Universe... the Fox movies are one universe, the Sony movies outside the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies is another universe... and then the MCU is a third universe.... yes, they are all based on Marvel Comics that all share the same universe but because the characters were sold off to other movie companies, in the movies they are different universes... in fact the Sony movies are multiple universes, with the Tobey movies being separate then the Andrew movies, and the Venom movies are also a separate universe from all the other ones
9:50 One thing I really appreciate about this scene is that when he says he can't look at her and she yells at him, he immediately pivots to telling her to look at her hands. Instead of it needlessly going back and forth and more yelling. The Fantastic 4 are basically the 4 elements. Susan is Air, with invisibility and telekinesis. Johnny is Fire. Ben is Earth (rock). Reed's elasticity makes him Water. And then there's Victor as Metal.
Susan attacks Victor; Mary "She's gonna take him on!" Victor attacks Susan; Mary "That's domestic assault!" The difference in attitude is kind of funny!
The reason this is hated is because Dr. Doom is Nothing like his comic book counterpart which is a thousand times better and lots of people's favorite villain from Marvel Comics
It is important to see all the legacy Marvel movies since Phase 4- Phase 6 is the multiverse and includes all Marvel movies in one way or another. Your editor is just getting you ready for Phase 5 of Marvel MCU.
You have said that you have a very bad memory, right? So let me recap something that you have already watched. Reed Richards appeared in Dr Strange in the multiverse of madness. He was portrayed by John Krasinski and it was his only appearance as Reed Richards. It was actually a fancast. A new iteration of the fantastic four set in the MCU is coming next year July 25 starring Pedro Pascal as Reed, Vanessa Kirby as Sue , Joseph Quinn as Johny and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben. It is titled as "The Fantastic Four Fist Steps" and the director is Matt Shakman, the director of WandaVision.
#1) Never listen to folks that say skip this movie or that movie. The movie going world is full of snooty, snobbish, jaded fans, particularly comicbook fans that hate anything that’s not what they remember from their childhood or want a movie to be. Normies usually don’t have that same problem and enjoy these film just fine. Fantastic Four 2 is fine. So are most of the pre-MCU Marvel movies. Watch them all, enjoy the ride, take them for what they are. #2) This was pre-MCU via 20th Century Fox so Marvel took a chance and hired the best actor (and inexpensive at the time) available, Chris Evans and it paid off.
Honestly the best thing about this movie is the fact that the 4 actually come across as a weathered family with Johnny & Ben in particular helping that come across. It’s just that the plot is just so thin.
I feel like the only thing that would have been better than RDJ playing Victor von Doom would be Julian McMahon returning to the role. That would have been INSANE!!!!!
"They make a good team." Say, you might have something there 😂 Mary, without hyperbole, you certainly have a gift for this. You really made this another fun watchalong, so thanks for that. I really hope you check out the follow-up to this soon. I think it's even better.
I just heard on the news this morning that a copy of Fantastic Four #1 from 1961 is going on auction, and is anticipated to sell for around $1.5 million.
In the early pantheon (60's to about mid 70's) The Thing was the 3rd most physically powerful Marvel superhero, the list went Hulk, Thor, Thing, Spider-Man. When this came out the MCU didn't exist yet, and Marvel had licensed the rights to certain characters to different film studios. The Fantastic Four and the X-Men were controlled by 20th Century Fox, Spider-Man was controlled by Sony and The Hulk was controlled by Universal.
Both Fantastic 4 movies are awesome! This cast is great together in their roles! The 2015 remake is good too. I don't give a damn what the critics and other haters say!
He is actually a big Marvel fan and was responsible for the low budget Roger Corman Fantastic Four movie being buried because he thought it would bring down the brand. Still, kind of a dick move since the creators worked hard on the movie with their limited means and it’s still probably the best Fantastic Four movie ever made
Michael Chiklis (the actor who played Ben Grimm/Thing) is a big fan of the character and made sure he did everything he could to get the part. He even insisted on learning how to talk through the heavy prosthetics on set rather than solely do ADR.
