Cindy, I have to tell you... as a 16 year old kid growing up in Nebraska, this is the song that really pulled me into country music. It proved to me that country music can be badass and poetic at the same time. I'm 37 now and still listen to this song, it'll always bring me back to a bonfire on the sandbar of the Missouri river, drinking beer with some of my closest friends. Jake was a big part of my childhood and I didn't even know it.

Chris was one of the very few country singers of the last few decades who actually walked the walk. He was never truly mainstream because he stuck to his roots in Wyoming and never really played by the rules in Nashville. But he’s quite possibly the most popular “independent” country singer of all time and is beloved by the community. His son Ned is carrying on his legacy these days.

Chris Ledoux was a real rodeo badass. He was champion cowboy and began singing to entertain his friends on the rodeo circuit. He was basically only famous around the rodeo. In 1989, Garth Brooks released“ Much too young to feel this damn old” There is a line in the song where he mentions “ a worn out tape of Chris Ledoux, lonely women and bad booze seem to be the only friends I’ve left at all” people who’d never heard of Chris Ledoux wanted to know who he was. Well the rest is history. Practically overnight Chris Ledoux was a household name amongst country fans. Chris had only one wife and several children that they raised in a log house that Chris built himself. Sadly in 2005 Chris lost his battle with cancer. In a side note Chris Ledoux wrote and recorded the song “Amarillo by morning” a song that George Strait had a smash hit with a few years later.

I grew up on working cattle ranches in West Texas and around rodeos. I remember when the only place you could buy his albums was in feed stores and western wear stores. Chris Ledoux!! Loved this video. Chris was a world champion cowboy as someone said earlier. He got started in music selling tapes of his songs out of the back of his car at rodeos. He did get a small record deal before this guy named Garth Brooks mentioned him in a song. "Much Too Young To Feel This Damned Old" which is a song about the life of a rodeo cowboy. Chris was driving down the road one day and heard the line "A worn out tape of Chris Ledoux, lonely women and bad booze, seem to be the only friends I've left at all." and nearly drove off the road. It was then that his music career took off. He used to ride a mechanical bull/buckin' horse in his shows and was very entertaining live. He and Garth recorded a song together called "Whatcha Gonna Do With A Cowboy" and after his passing, Garth recorded a tribute song called "Good Ride Cowboy, Good Ride." Thank you!!!

He was off and running way before then. He just went mainstream after Garth Brooks mentioned him. He was musically successful before then. Selling music out of western Horseman magazine amongst others. Under his own label his entire family employed by him. And extremely popular amongst Rodeo Cowboys that's a huge Market in itself.

Chris LeDoux is one of the most authentic musicians that ever lived. He lived the lifestyle of the cowboy life that he sang about from competing as a professional rodeo cowboy and selling his own tapes out of the back of his truck to supplement his rodeo career. He finally won the gold buckle as a champion bronc rider in 1976. He then retired from Rodeo to focus on his music career and raise his family on a ranch in Wyoming. He was an independent artist for nearly 20 years. It wasnt till late in his career that he finally signed a major record deal in Nashville after he was name dropped in Garth Brooks's debut single "Much to young to feel this damn Old". Alot of the songs he recorded were recycled songs from his independent days. At the same time that happened Chris had just recruited a new band that he named "Western Underground" who would be the ones responsible to creating the rodeo rock sound that LeDoux is known for today. His live shows were high energy and often concluded with Chris riding a mechanical bull and lots of pyrotechnics. Garth Brooks has admitted that he pretty much stole Chris's live show for his own. Chris's oldest son Ned LeDoux started playing drums for the band in the late 90's when their original drummer KW Turnbow was injured in an accident. When KW returned they performed with two drummers. Also at that time Chris battled liver cancer and undergone a transplant but eventually the cancer would eventually catch up to him and he'd pass away in 2005. After his death Western Underground continued to tour with a couple different front men to keep the spirit of Chris's songs alive. Then in 2015 Ned stepped out from behind the drums to fill his dads boots and has began his career with Western Underground backing him. Ned performs alot of his dads old songs and has also released an album of all new material. Some of the songs were written from some unused lyrics his mom found when cleaning up Chris's stuff. I suggest you dig some more into the catalog of Chris LeDoux and check out the new stuff his son Ned has put out. Ned sounds so much like his dad its scary!

A Blue Norther is a fast-moving cold front that causes temperatures to drop dramatically and quickly. Common characteristics are a dark blue-black sky, strong winds, and temperatures than can drop 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit in a few minutes. While Blue Northers can occur in other parts of the country, the phenomenon is commonly associated with the Texas panhandle.

I want to say thank you for this review from the bottom of my heart. It made me look into Chris Ledoux more, and find some songs that really resonated with who my Dad was and the way he went about life. Specifically the song "(I used to want to be a) Cowboy" and how I can see the ways my own Dad went about life now and how's that's reflected in me in the few years since he's been gone.

I was a daddy's girl and one of the first things he taught me was you NEVER EVER touch a mans hat. My granddaddy's nick name was Shine, he made and sold moonshine and he always wore a Stetson cowboy hat. And he taught me the same thing. I have seen a lot of arguments and fights in my life and one thing about it that's beyond true, You will not and best not ever touch a mans hat! Mr.Chris Ledoux was the best at every thing he done. He actually rode bulls and also sang country music. He is an icon to Country in every sense of the word. Ever song he sings is a story and mind blowing.

My brothers wife grew up in the Arizona rodeo circuit, Chris was just one of the cowboys competing but come sundown sitting around the fire hitting the bottle and throwing down a cold one or two he would break out the guitar, it was along time before he recorded anything. He was just a good old boy, an authentic cowboy that could sing, but most importantly he could relate to the other riders and cowboys, he wasn't blowing smoke. I finally saw him at the Emerald Empire Roundup in Eugene, Oregon in the mid 90s, great show and a real entertainer. RIP CL RIDE that stairway to heaven on a wild bull.

This was new to me, and really impressed me as well. Besides the meaning, I loved the poetic chorus. Those lyrics reminded me of that old country/western classic "Ghost Riders In the Sky", which was beloved by a dear friend of mine because her dad loved it so much. After her dad died, we'd occasionally hear it somewhere & she'd say "That's Dad letting me know he's thinking of me." Now she's gone, way too young at 52, and that song always makes me miss her. So did this song in a way. Really enjoyed your reaction, guys. And love you, Cindy, wherever you are.

My sister used to sing country music professionally, so we used to go to a lot of her shows for moral support. One regular show had an amazing banjo player who'd sometimes take requests for Ghost Riders in the Sky, and it always gave me chills. To this day, I sometimes put it on just to get that good, shivery feeling. I'm sorry for your losses and don't mean to take away from that at all. Just glad to see someone else loving songs I love, though for very different (much better) reasons.

Thank you!!! This really shows y'all are so open minded. Chris LeDoux was not a country singer really. He was a cowboy singer and a real cowboy. He lived the life he sang about, rodeos and ranching. He died in March 2005. He started out making his own CD's and selling them at rodeos. He never fit the country mold and wouldn't cave to corporate radio as to what his music should sound like, and to this day he is not played much on main stream country radio. He is one of the best story tellers and has countless songs that are amazing. If y'all react to more of Chris's songs, check out "Riding For a Fall," "Songs of Wyoming," "Powder River Home," and "The Ride," just to name a few.

Country culture and African American culture have so much in common. I grew up in a mostly Jamaican community(I’m white btw), lower income community, blah blah, but my grandfather is a old school cowboy, rancher, Vietnam vet, and I’d go visit him in the winter out in Wyoming and he taught me cowboy culture, how to ride horses, hunt, and connect with nature, I clocked how similar the cultures are early on

Let me start by saying how much I respect that you guys, regardless of knee jerk reactions on how you think a song will be, keep open minds and really listen to the music. It is surprising how much truly good music there is out there. I am a rock guy at heart, but when I listen to country I listen to Chris. His songs are always really deep or just plain fun. You should check out either "Photo Finish" or "Billy the Kid" (my favorite song by Chris). Another interesting factoid, he was best friends with Garth Brooks, and after his death Garth came out of retirement to perform a tribute to him called "Good Ride Cowboy". He uses titles of Chris Ledoux's songs as the lyrics all throughout it. It is a really good song as well. You may want to check that one out as well.
