Chris Mullin (41pts, 16/21FG) vs. Magic Johnson (44pts/12rebs/9asts) (1991 Playoffs)

Stephen Curry and the guys have had some very impressive shooting displays during this season, the obvious one to point out at this point being the 65% of shots they just made from the field against the Nuggets in game 2. But, in my opinion, this still is the best instance of long range shooting a Warrior has shown off. An injured Chris Mullin, who had sprained his knee in round 1 against the Spurs, went through two workouts to get ready for the second game of round two at LA. Did it pay off or what!? Mully went for 41 points on 16 from 21 from the field, with 5 assists, to boot. Meanwhile, Magic Johnson, who had spent the majority of the first half finding his teammates, noticed that the game might slip out of the Lakers' hands and replied to Mullin's jumpers by attacking him nearly every time down the court. Magic was basically scoring at will, either he made a shot or the Warriors fouled him. His playoffs career-high (and the only 44/12/9 in playoffs since 1985) wasn't enough though as the Warriors pulled off the W on the road. May 8, 1991.

Smoothest left-handed long-range shooter that I have ever seen play. There's something about being right-handed and admiring lefties, especially who can shoot it with ease, and Mullin was the best one. All I remember is emulating him (and David Robinson) quite often when I was young.

One of the great duels in NBA history; whilst many games have had two guys who are hot very few games have two players basically scoring at will, games such as Bird v Wilkins and this are what made the NBA so great, seeing two completely contrasting styles (Magic being a driver, great passer and one of only 2 or 3 PG's to develop a low post game) and Mullin (one of the greatest shooters to ever play as well as a slasher and excellent spot up player) dominate, nowadays most players have the same style.
@Amick44

Superb analogy. Mullin, like Vandeweghe, wasn't fast or real quick, but could get to the hoop as well as shoot. And they didn't miss their FT's, either.

I stared watching & playing the game because of Magic, but people always told me I shot just like Mullin (Except right-handed). They didn't know that was all I wanted to do & practiced everyday. Magic inspired me to love the game & learn to pass first, & Mullin (who Magic said, basically, when God created Basketball, he carved Chris Mullin out and said, this is a player." inspired me w/his quick hands & shooting form.

I shudder to think what guys like Mullin, Magic, Worthy and all of the great players from the 80s (and 90s) that I grew up watching, would be able to do in this era, under these rules (which favors them). Combine that aspect with the fact that guys from their era, actually trained on the collegiate level for 3-4 years, giving them a more polished and solid, fundamentally based game, and you're looking at a SIGNIFICANT INCREASE in their productivity! Easily!!!

You got to give it to players like Bird & Mullin, physically not the best , but they were pure shooters, with hustle,work ethic and court sense. His quick release is smooth like butter, Steph Curry is similar.

Magic looks like he'd be easy to defend but he keeps pulling the same moves off successfully. Back in the defender, hook shot. Back in the defender, spin towards basket for a floater/layup.

Earv is criminally underrated as a scorer. He averaged 19.5 career. There are guys like Mark Aguirre who are remembered as primary scorers who retired with 20 ppg averages. Magic could do almost anything he wanted offensively save for high-fly dunks. He had big hands to get great spin on the ball, same as Jordan. He had a lot of finesse to be able to hit those hooks with both right AND LEFT(!) hands. He developed a decent three in only 2 yrs of trying (towards end of his career). Plus, he had better post moves and footwork than the GREAT majority of 3s, 4s, and 5s. Plus, his handle up court was honed from running thousands of fastbreaks. He did basket to basket runs for point blank layups once a game because the 3s and 4s who were tasked to guard him couldn't keep pace with him in the open court. He also had a superb drop step and perimeter spin move. In one of the 91 Finals games, he spun around Pippen and then faked Jordan with a no-look pass in the same play. Very deceptive player in a general sense -- in passing for sure, but also offensively.

The Lakers gave this game away at the end - up 4 with 30 seconds left they allow a three-point play off a putback to cut it to 1 and then Campbell with the ridiculous loose ball foul on the offensive end to give them 2 free throws, then to top it off they throw away the inbounds pass. Was rare for the Lakers of that era to fail down the stretch like that.

There were a lot of players with very quick releases/shots from the 60s-80s. The only reason Mullin stands out here is because you haven't watched enough older games to know better.
@nonplayerzealot4
@nonplayerzealot4 6 лет назад
Dell Curry's release was arguably faster than his son's. You gotta be like 37-41 at best to remember Dell as a player, tho. Not the standard for online hoop fans. I'm old. I actually saw this game live when I was 15. Great, fun series. Magic was pissed off during GS's opening intros for Gm 3 in Oakland. They had RUN DMC introing the Warriors and the entire intros lasted about 25 minutes. I still got that game, I rewatched it a couple yrs ago. Chick Hearn was predicting a win before the first minute from the look of annoyance on Magic's face during that. He wasn't interested in that kinda silliness during the playoffs.

Agreed. If you've nailed down your accuracy, that shit is unstoppable. Funny that mostly centers and bigger forwards use it most, when in fact it could benefit shorter players who are up against a bigger defender.

@FilipoSooaUlufale
@FilipoSooaUlufale 8 лет назад
@Franklin Clinton @LamarMatic But the thing is, would Phil Jackson have tolerated Chris Mullin being an offense first kind of guy with Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant shouldering the bulk of the scoring load? But if we're talking prime Mullin when he was a superstar scoring machine and you put him in the '99-'00 Lakers lineup, he would be better than Glen Rice (post-elbow surgery version), Rick Fox and Devean George. I do know Phil made Rice split time in a timeshare at SF with Fox, because Fox provides defense while Rice at that point was only good for mid-level scoring and nothing else. Again, if it's the prime years of Mullin we're talking about for the Lakers, sign me up and cover his defensive shortcomings with a better third scoring option than Rice. But if it's the actual '99-'00 version of Mullin where he was benched as a backup swingman behind Reggie Miller and Jalen Rose, then he's better off being a third-string SF or at least Kobe's backup SG who hardly played 20+ minutes unless Kobe misses time.

The NBA has gone downhill. I remember those awesome LA- Boston and the bad boys of Detroit. That was basketball. Anybody that can compare the selfish players now. Look how the Lakers knew where everyone was at all times, Now it's a 3 point contest. And below average talent. No fundamentals. Practicing dunks, does not make a player.

This is the first time I've ever seen Magic play like this, and to be honest I'm somewhat disappointed. He's playing direct ball instead of being Magic. Where's the no look passes? Magic score 44 points in a game? He was never interested in getting such high points, as long as he made his team mates better. No wonder they couldn't beat the bulls in the finals, they were playing then on the same level instead of the old school Laker show time style that Magic made famous. The lack of Pat Riley is really obvious here.

91 was a mystery to me as a Laker fan, as far as last play, why were they trying to get the ball to Campbell? 😂 I guess Bulls defense held down Worthy & I have NO CLUE what happen to Byron that series. Lakers weren’t that old so not sure why losing 1-4 series happen? Like I said looking at stats Magic got no help from others! I guess the only explanation is there was no Michael Cooper to help slow down M.J. they definitely missed Coop!!!

The Bulls were younger, more athletic and hungrier. They weren't going to be denied no matter what. Both Worthy and Scott missed a game injured too. Magic couldn't get away with his usual posting up smaller PG guards with the ballhawking younger 6'6" MJ and 6'7" Pippen with wiry arms.
