He's 27 now and he watched the interview and called me so excited and said "mom, mom that's exactly what I have". He sent me a RU-vid video about NVLD that explained it even deeper and it was my son to a tee. That’s what’s so beautiful about Chris Rock talking about it: so people with NVLD - especially kids - can understand it, get help, and not be embarrassed about it. I got diagnosed late in life, also had an ADHD diagnosis but knew there was more to it. That was about two years before Chris Rock talked about it. He really helped me accept it. So glad your son was diagnosed early in life. Good for you that you took it seriously - many parents don’t. Struggling undiagnosed for a lifetime is no joke. I wish your family well.

I have the same disorder. I've had women literally tell me they wanted to smash and it went over my head. The only difference is that I'm extremely technically inclined and artistically inclined so I was actually diagnosed as having asperger syndrome. What helped me with music and technical skills is that I see sound as colors and music comes to me as mathematical equations(rhythms are fractions and chords and melodies are geometry and algebra)...which is really(to me) the same as anything involving some kind of technical skill. It took my wife to take our son to get tested (because he also has the same disorder) for me to get retested...then it was explained to me as nonverbal disorder. I've actually been off of medication for almost 7 years now but growing up it was VERY tough. The teasing was brutal. I was the music geek, math nerd who was trying to be white. Even today people are freaked out that I can play four instruments and can build a guitar amplifier or write a computer program just as well. Artists generally aren't technical and tech heads generally aren't artists but I do both equally well.
