Chris Sharma: The Legacy Continues

Chris Sharma's meteoric climbing career started when he won the Bouldering Nationals at age 14 and opened the hardest climb in America (at the time, 5.14c) a year later. In the decade that followed, Chris has continued to take climbing to a new level. Not only has he consistently shattered previous conceptions of difficulty, he was recently voted 8a Climber of the Decade. He has sent multiple 5.15 routes, bouldered V15, onsighted 5.14b, and established deep water solo routes at the highest grades. Chris holds claim to the current hardest route in America, and perhaps the world, with his ascent of Jumbo Love at Clark Mountain in California. Chris has a lot on his plate this year with a new house in Spain, establishing a string of 5.15 routes and climbing almost daily with his girlfriend Daila Ojeda. The area around their home is considered one of the hotspots for the sport globally with more than 70 crags featuring steep limestone caves and seemingly endless possibilities. It looks like Chris will have plenty of time to perfect his Spanish accent...

Hey Nicholas, we really appreciate the nice words. We work hard and your compliment means we are doing something right and that is always good to hear! Thanks

That expulsion of breath causes the engagement of the core muscles and actually helps the climber to sustain the body tension at the end of the move - assuming they continue holding the breath out. The vocals... it's like calling on something bigger than oneself ;)

Chris was awesome long before he started winning anything. I had the pleasure of working with Chris when he was 13. He didn't then, and I hope still doesn't, know the meaning of "give up." And as I was saying yesterday to an aspiring young hockey player... he just plays the game without himself caught up in it. He is a true Yogi.

@vickizspace chris is known for the hardest and most difficult routes in the world, its the athletic aspect of climbing, he pushes himself to the physical limit and he knows that he will fall and will need many many tries. dean and alex are known for their mental strenght to climb without ropes, they push themselves psychical to the limit; you cant compare this two different ways of climbing. they are both a complete own way.

@IfBrettWasWhite85 Rock climbing is one of those things that you have to experience in order to appreciate how hard the climbs are unlike ninja warrior which has alot of flare and you can appreciate the difficulty by just watching.

I also wondered why he grabbed them at first. If you notice there are no draws on the anchor (because thats the only bolt exposed to rain so they would just get damaged) so there's no way for him to clip the anchors. Just gave him another reason to take a victory whipper I guess?

@vickizspace I think you shouldn't compare these climbers that way. Climbing toprope is different to lead climbing is different to free soloing. The less security the rope gives to you, the less you will climb at your limit. Reasonably.

To quote, you said he was "the one" that pushed the borders of free climbing. That would be like if I were to say "Alex Honnold was the one who pushed the borders of free soloing" Now, if I were to say that he "pushed the borders of free soloing", that'd be different. If you were to say Chris "pushed the borders of free climbing", that'd be different. To say he is/was "the one" would be wrong.

I disagree. Chris has quite some feats he has accomplished, but I wouldn't say he was the one and only one that has pushed the borders of free climbing. Wolfgang Gullich pushed it by FA'ing Action Direct, the worlds first 5.14D. Lynn Hill was first person to free climb the Nose on El Cap.

You can't compare this crap with Chris Sharma, Jyoti is just a stunt or show climber, the routes you see in his video are an absolute completly joke compared to what you see here, this is a 5.15b, the hardest grade you can currently climb on world wide.

Why are you skipping your own bolts!?! Don't drill em if your not gonna clip em!
@evanpkto
@evanpkto 10 лет назад
While working the route the bolts are necessary to practice the moves on 'top rope' but on the red point attempt when you are safely above the ground a lot of climbers skip the last bolt and go straight to the anchors to save energy. I've never climbed 5.15b so I can't say I'm sure how difficult it would be to clip every bolt.
