This was such a phenomenal gig, too - what a great video capture! Chris is the player's player for sure and one of the best. Thanks for this rare gem, pokopen.
Wowza, all that on a les Paul jr., what terrific song craft! Heard about this cat from Danny Gattons biography Unfinished Business. They played rockabilly together in Robert Gordon’s band in the early 80’s.
I remember that Concert! I'd never heard of Chris up until then. Him backing Cale made that one the best concerts I have ever attended. As I recall, the drummer was also on fire...
Been a huge Chris Spedding fan since I was introduced to his music by members of the first band I was in outta school. That was '81. Went through 2 copies of that first album, and have everything he's done up to the 90's. Would play Guitar Jamboree for all my friends to show how great he is. Got to meet him in '81 at a punk club in Milwaukee called The Starship. This performance rocks!
Thanks for posting this video. I just dug out "Hurt" and the "Green Oldsmobile" from my LP collection to convert to MP3. Both are quite good records. Amazing how some musicians become popular idols on charisma (or brown nosing) while other accomplished guitarists such as Chris never really hit it big.
Love him - he doesn't only play the notes, he manage to replicate the specific touch of all the greats, that's why he "sound" like them, even with a single P90 guitar instead of the many different guitars used on the original recordings.
I shook his hand once after a gig with Robert Gordon..nice man..the reason I even wanted to shake his hand was the fact that he produced Sex Pistols demo tapes which gave them a deal
Now it’s easy to criticise Chris’ voice...but this is how to show off your chops and not bore your audience 😂. Chris was a brilliant session guitarist as well as mentoring the Sex Pistols
I find it very interesting, that he played on two records of the jazzrock band NUCLEUS in early 70s, which I own, and he played cool. But, this music is totally different to his later Rock´nRoll - Rhythm ´n Blues, sometimes with a country touched rockabilly style... I also own some these records, cause like a lot this stuff, too... anyway thanx for posting - but he was a member of NUCLEUS... one cannot imagine by hearing "Get Out My Pagoda" or "Lobotomy", "Breakout", etc
1st of all - great soundin' rig! LP Jr. through what looks like a Mesa Boogie...2ndly - to all the naysayers below - when was the last time you pulled off this song live w/ just a trio?
@@bobgure Chris doesn't use effects. When I saw him in 2023 on his last tour, he used his James Trussart guitar straight into a hired '64 Fender Deluxe Reverb on 7, working the volume knob on the guitar. He's a friend of mine and still plays bloody good at 79.
Great player and highly underrated - although this is not one if his best performances...and he should definitely stick to the gutear and leave the singing for....well, practically everybody else...
Nice impersonations. It's a shame he could impersonate a brilliant guitarist who went on to have a glittering career. Instead, guitarist who just got by with a band of losers , but was happy enough to earn enough money to stick loads of coke up his nose, was a softer option.
