Yes Derrick wishes he could play like Johnny, notice all smiles from band members, they all know their playing with one of the greatest blues Legends that ever walked on this planet.&100% drug free! Finally!!!😊❤❤❤ One of my older guitar instructors played with Johnny Winter, Albert Collins, Albert King,& SRV. Johnny Winter paved the road...
The best are always the most humble. I salute you Mr. Winters. You are a musical force like no other, sans the big ego. Thanks for the incredible tunes and musicianship.
Johnny is legendary, but he was just a man and he knew it. I met him in 07. He had a gig at the Old Polk Theater in Lakeland Fl. After the show, a friend and I went to a little Blues Cafe, just up the street. In walked Johnny, alone and like he was just a local. He came over with his drink and asked if we would mind sharing the table. The next thing I knew, I was jamming with him and he was signing my strat! My moment of GLORY and a memory I'll take to my grave, with a smile.
You were so lucky to have had a drink with him. What a legend , and just a man with an extraordinary talent for playing guitar. I saw him 5 or 6 times , from 1970's to 2005 . He's my all time favorite.
You lucky Fuck ! So random ! Sometime in the early '80's, I was in Nashville, Tennessee at a Hotel, working on a Satellite system there, and during an off time, I walked into the Bar, which was closed, and set down at a piano I was told Elvis used to play, just to noodle around, and the bartender told me if I would have been a couple minutes earlier, I could have met George Jones, as he stopped in to have a drink ! The day before, a radio station was touting how great it was, that he was on the wagon, and had quit drinking ! Not as great s story as yours, but yours reminded me just how chance meetings can happen ! Great story ! Thanks for letting me share ! ✌️😎
Johnny was more than a bluestringer. He played mandolin, drums, harp, bass ...who knows what else. He was also very intelligent. I had the pleasure of hangin with him several times. He was generous with his time and knowledge. A truly good guy. I miss him.
I love how Mr. Trucks, who is a legend in his own right, just looks a Johnny like he's Superman... His real life hero right there on stage. That's love right there people! Rest in peace Johnny! Your spirit definitely lives on!!
I saw him jazz fest crescent city 1982. Entire population was at Steel Pulse stage. It was me and Jonnie Fkn winter. I could see the sky beind his bright white eyes. He looked down at me and said, “I hate to play the blues on such a sunny day” and crushed the opening chord. If there’s a God in heaven son ….
Derek and his wife Susan are truly the nicest people. Johnny mentions Derek in a interview as one of his favorite young blues players. Watch BB King at the Albert hall.. Susan and Derek are guests .
@@green323turbo I've seen Tedeschi Trucks Band twice and they were amazing both times. I was already familiar with how awesome Derek was after seeing him play with the Allman Bros but man Susan blew me away in concert.
I know this is an older video with a young Derek Trucks, there’s a RU-vid video with Playing for Change that plays Levee’s Going to Break that features John Paul Jones and Derek and his wife are in it. If anyone hasn’t seen it, check it out, it’s great.
I once had the great pleasure of seeing and hearing Johnny Winter perform with Janis Joplin at the Palm Beach Music Festival in 1969. Amazing performance!
Greatness???.... fucking legend... Johnny grew up in the blues, taught by the Masters... he was persecuted for being whiter than white as much as the Afro-Americans where persecuted fro being black... As far as I am concerned he is a better blues guitarist than Eric Clapton.
No...he just knows that he doesn't have to pollute the song like weekend warriors at a local blues night at the dive bar do. He is a pro. That is why he is just watching and playing. Less is best.
Johnny Winter is amazing,,, oh well l did not miss him as a young gal either,, saw him 3 x here in my hometown,Memphis Tn!!! A genius he was/is,legendary ❣️
Johnny Winters is a true phenomenon of electric blues!!! No one ever had surpassed him!!! I saw him many times in Detroit in the 1970's n to this day I still listen to his albums, especially Still Alive N Well n Saints N Sinners, which I grew up on and are part of me to this day!!! He was a great electric blues, rock, blues, guitar player, song writer, singer n showman!!!! I was a dancer for years in Detroit n I used his albums for my dancing sets!!!! RIP, Johnny, you are part of my musical soul!!!
Losing Johnny Winter on July 16, 2014 was losing one of the last truly great blues guitarist. He joins that great jam session in the sky!! RIP Johnny!!
He's old here, but in his prime, nobody could touch him. If you don't really know about Johnny and this video is your introduction, go check out some of his other stuff. He was a monster talent.
I saw Johnny several times, the first at a Fort Lauderdale Blues Festival, he was with Tommy Shannon. I saw hplay up close and realized he was using a three finger pick style like you play banjo. I was stunned. He had such speed and accuracy and was one of the best slide players at the time. Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Dickie Betts, Johnny Winter were the best white blues sidemen for decades. Though Johnny is gone, I heard him on a radio program live from Chicago Blues Festival years ago and his slide playing haunted me for years from that show. Real soul, real style and lightning speed or slow blues he never let you down especially on any solo. Johnny will be missed at the top of the list. His brother Edgar is an incredibly talented musician who played rock, jazz, blues and his ability was also staggering in so many styles. Long live Johnny.
Saw Johnny in his prime several times when he was still standing and playing and he tore the place apart. Torched many a Rock legends in that era, just blew them away. I won`t name names.
Johnny’s Firebird should be enshrined at The Smithsonian. I saw him wailing on the old red SG many times in Detroit early on but most of the videos I’ve seen is with that trusty Firebird. Derek Trucks and the bass player were just in awe !! ❤️
The results of never giving up, playing something everyday. Here we see an absolute Legend carrying the music. The simple and the great in one chair, one guitar.
That performance was priceless. One of the best ever. I can read lips enough to know Derek Trucks said wow at the end. That a guy that been around a lot of great guitar players.
Johnny's got the slide hanging off his pinky , but such amazing control. Even with the slide angled , flopping around, it always sounds spot on . He must have had a fantastic ear , for not even looking at the guitar
No, the thing was, the angle of the slide favored the treble strings at the twelfth fret, so...they went slightly sharp. It is not sloppy or floppy at all!
Two Legends of Slide Guitar, one old, one young. The passing of the Torch and the rite of passage are so very plain to see here. Music is a shrine to our soul. Thanks to all for their contributions.
Saw him play at an obscure venue in London in 68 or 69. He had so much energy and pranced about the stage with that long flowing white hair. Fell in love with fingerslide that night.
That tone... so dirty and expressive! I watched this over 10 years ago and couldn´t get over the tone of his Firebird... i come back once in a while just to check if the sound in my head gets it right!
I was so fortunate to see Johnny perform a month before he passed... what a talent! His style was so unique. His albums, and those with Muddy Waters, are on constant rotation in my music library... along with Jimi H., ABB, Gov't Mule, ZZ Top, George Thorogood, and a little Joe Bonamassa. Still gets these 64 year old feet tapping.
Absolutely fenominal!!, I am so greatful to have seen him play live here in Houston Texas so many times, and just missed him having my friend Kevin Karapata who knew him personally, he would visit him often when he came to town , say to me Jonny was here!!, But I did get to jam with his drummer, Uncle John he was so down to earth and cool!!,
I saw Johnny perform at my high school gymnasium when I was a sophomore, in 1969. His first Columbia LP was just out. An awesome show. I was just a 15 year old kid, I had no idea that he would become the legend he is now, but I did know then that he was something special.
Grew up in the 70’s listening to Mr Winter. I was born and raised in Houston and JW being from SE Texas I always was a fan of good music from my home state. I listen to his music all the time.
My uncle owned a limousine company in New Orleans and I would drive on special occasions or in between oil company jobs. I think the last super bowl in New Orleans I picked up Derek trucks and his wife who did an album together I knew his uncle and the Allman Brothers fairly well as security at the warehouse in New Orleans where my guys I got in for free, and they always sold the Allman Brothers their cocaine and heroin as these guys were merchant marines. But Derek has played with everybody now, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy who he played with quite a bit and his jaw was down and he had a big smile when he played with him also. He's an incredible guitar player coming from his family and then really seasoned with the Old pros. He was so humble he and his wife. They gave me their latest CD and it was great because his wife could sing and play guitar. He's probably the newest talent around right now and one of the last rock and roll and Blues guitarist, God bless him and keep him as I believe he learned to stay away from the drugs after watching his uncle and the Allman Brothers. In one show they would do an ounce of cocaine and a bundle of heroin. Speedballing all the way there. I don't know how they stayed alive but I did the same thing so I'm a walking miracle at I was able to stop at 30 and surrender and say Jesus where are you I went out in the woods for 4 months with a Bible because I did not want to play religion. I can tell you my life has never been the same. But I still like my old blues and rock and roll and I don't play with the churches only study the Bible for 39 years and try to live by it. God is pretty good when you can stay awake for 4 days sleep one and go back out for four more for 8 months and he kept me alive but at that point I was at the end of my rope. I surrendered and any of my friends that did not are all dead. I should be I OD'd 10 or 15 times but came back between God looking out and the fact that I was a swimmer in high school and college but without God I'd be six feet under and burning in hell
No other blue's player sounds like Johnny winter a voice that was made for the blue's and a playing talent that was the best accompaniment that could possibly be Johnny his voice a slide and a firebird a combination that will never be matched and I believe everybody knows it. R.i.P. Mr. Johnny Winter no other blue's player or singer will.ever even come close.
Agree except for the Smithsonian part. Things go into that place... history changing things, mind blowing things and they get put in the basement of the basement of the basement and hidden away forever. If not outright destroyed.
Would have loved to have seen Johnny @ this show, the man was a fantastic guitar~slide slinger!! 😅 Love his hat & Derek’s just a pup here, the huge grin never left the bassist’s face, think he’s probably in awe!
I was in love with tobacco road the instant i heard johnny unique stile, i was only 13 years old, i am still playing a little slide on my 63 jazzmaster. Thank you for all the men as influence a many men ......
My friend Brian Miller took me to see Johnny play in Kalamazoo Michigan a bunch of times. Truly one of the greatest. R.I.P. Johnny, you will never be forgotten and thank you for keeping the blues alive! 📕
Is very blessed to meet someone very dear to my heart one of the best guitar players in the world in Butte Montana before he passed rest in peace and I know heaven is happy here in your Blues. Rest in peace Johnny. Thank you
So glad I got to see this legend play live about a year before he passed. At the time, he was quite frail and and to be helped to the stage. But once he sat down and started playing, he unleashed the fury!
This man was god god, and he will also be, for all future - Plays like he come from another Universe.- Rest in Peace Jonny - We will never forget you !!!
Highway 61 is a real highway. It runs from around Duluth, Minnesota, down to New Orleans. For decades it was a two lane. Today, most of it is four lane. Dylan grew up in Hastings, near Duluth. To him, 61 was the path south to the Delta and the Delta Blues. I have motorcycled every mile of it over my life, based out of Iowa.
Skmewhere on Hwy 61 is the (in)famous Crossroads where Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul. (even though it wasn't really Robert Johnson). Some famous guitarists have a small vial of dirt from a crossroads on 61. Jimmy Page has been seen wearing one around his neck.
One of highlights of my life was seeing him in person at Chicago House of Blues, my friend and I stood a couple inches from him, fabulous experience!!!
First saw this man at a Christmas concert in Denver in 1969. He was one of the backup bands for Fleetwood Mac. I had just gotten out of the US Army 3 months before and It was the first concert I ever went to. Awesome performance!
I've been a Johnny Winter fan since 1974. I bought a lot of his LPs. Sat down and Put the speaker on my thigh for the break in "Pick Up On My Mojo." Last Night" Rollin' Cross The Country many other great songs Mean Town Blues It's My One Fault Johnny was awesome, saw him four times.
Salute! I used to sit n chat with a fellow, Mr. C (aka Cutter) at his blues bar in Texas. He shared some hella cool stories about road adventures w Johnny,SRV,and Andy Gibb. His genuine love for all three was evident--he never said a negative word about any of 'em--but he made it plain and simple....Johnny was the original,Stevie was the student. When I admitted I had limited exposure to Johnny, well 'ol Cutter seemed offended and made me pay for my own beer for about a week, but he gave in and forgave me. AFTER I listened to nuthin' but Johnny for a week. By then,I was all in! Ashamed as a Texan for not knowing what I shoulda known but grateful Cutter put me in check. Thanks,Mr.C! Salute,Johnny Winter!
