Somewhere James Brown is smiling down in approval. This wasn't realky a Country audience. He was just listening to the Shadowboxers and got invited to sit in for a song. I believe someone in the audience may have suggested this song.

The way the other musicians are looking at Chris

Chris wasn't chosen out of the audience by happenstance. He was scheduled to perform with the band as were 3 other separate acts. However, that being said, the audience chose each song for each act based on the Shadowboxers' known catalog. So, no, there wasn't any rehearsal or practice. Just look at the band members.....they were shocked and in awe. And if you paid attention, Chris had to get the organ/synthesizer player ready after the instrumental by repeating "This" a few times....And Chris was going to sing out the song at the end but the band cut the song short. Absolutely the best cover of this song I've ever heard! Bar none!!!

Country isn't what most people always thought it was, they refused to listen, but now think that something isn't country. There are different genres of country like there are genres of RnB, Soul, rock, blues, jazz. Nashville is a leading place to record for many different forms of music today. Record companies categorize to a fault so they can market, just enjoy good music without getting hung up on labels.

Chris Stapleton can sing anything just like Chris Cornell. Must be a "Chris" thang!

Who else other then Chris Stapleton could get called up on stage unexpected, bust out one of the hardest songs to sing by a true legend and then just nod to the crowd and walk off ? . The man is one of the best to ever do it.

You can not go wrong with Chris. Having said that another artist that you can't go wrong with is the late blues rock artist Stevie Ray Vaughan. Also live performances are best. I'll start you off with Stevie Ray Vaughan: Texas Flood (Live at the El Mocambo). You will not regret it.

I love listening to Chris. His voice is amazing. As difficult as this song is to sing, you owe it to yourself to watch 11 year old Angelina Jordan perform it live. She is accompanied by the Norwegian Armed Forces Band. Even though it's a fan made video, it will make you rethink everything you know about musical ability.

He has a nice rasp and like D.R. said "powerful, and commanding." This is soul I think country is derived from a more fundamental gospel genre, IMO. 🙏

I am a long time Chris fan and this song is excellent but if you really want to see him at his very best watch the video of him doing "Whipping Post" a Allman Brothers song from the 70's. Greg Allman is in the audience and gives him a standing ovation. Do yourself this favor and check it out. Changes everything
