I live in his hometown of Paintsville Ky. My wife went to high school with Chris. Chris graduated the year after my wife. And YES, from anything I've ever heard from anybody who grew up with him, or knew him locally (I've never met him) he is the genuine article and a truly great guy and human being.

Chris Stapleton is a music writer and if it wasn’t for his wife who by the way is the back up singer in this song and many of his other songs. His wife was the one who pushed him to make his own album and sing his own lyrics instead of just writing for other artists. Nothing like a good woman to be next to you to push you to greatness!

I took an elective class in college called the history of country music, and the professor told us that one of the "phases" of country music a long time ago was called the "talking blues." So it has pieces of country, blues, rap, jazz, etc. in it. It was incredibly interesting to learn about.

Funny how this song is what everyone knows by Stapleton, although it's one of his only songs that he didn't write. The first person to ever record this song was David Allan Coe, followed a couple of years later by George Jones. Stapleton rewrote the music, stayed mostly true to the original lyrics and made it his own. Originally written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove, although they never recorded it.

Stapleton is married to singer-songwriter Morgane Stapleton. The couple met when they were working at adjacent publishing houses.They have five children and live in Nashville.
