Just because a movie is hard to make doesn't mean it is above criticism. The gatekeeping I saw over the weekend like "If you knew how hard it is to make a movie then you'd be a lot nicer, yada yada yada" was weird. And what kind of critic holds themself back because they're afraid of upsetting someone?

Ever since Chris got in the Hollywood game with his own projects, I think that it also affected his style of content. Which is why I am glad we have the Critical Drinker who is unafraid to call out the B.S. in modern cinema, whilst also highlighting either underrated gems, or genuinely great entertainment.

When I was young, I didn't understand why older people were so angry with stuff all the time. Now that I'm the 'older people', I get it completely. I now understand that when I was young, I didn't know any better. Hollywood is just about ignoring the older people that know, and focusing on the youth that have no idea how bad they are.

This is the same guy that critics Star Wars prequels and george Lucas.

He used to grade movies. Then he suddenly announced that he was going to stop grading movies. Then he announced that he was going to make his own movie, and that explained everything. If he criticizes the wrong director, that's it, he's over. He won't be able to get funding. He wants to "celebrate" film making, which is just another way of saying he wants to be in the good graces of a big Hollywood studio. I don't know if he's a talented film maker or not, I haven't seen any of his movies.

I've been subscribed to Chris Stuckmann's channel since like 2010, and found some of his deep analysis, especially the Nicolas Winding Refn films like Drive and Only God Forgives, enlightening. But this was over a decade now, and another YT channel opened my eyes when they said that he actually says nothing in his so called movie reviews. He just describes the plot, throws around some cool adjectives, and is done with it. On one hand I understand not wanting to say bad things about your "colleagues". On the other... you are supposed to be a film critic, aren't you? Besides, you can and should give constructive criticism beyond "film = bad" and not come across like a douchebag.

Because he's another modern-day Kevin Smith, an industry cheerleader. He can't disparage several million-dollar productions or else he'll lose ad revenue and subs. TL:DR: He's another shill who barely criticizes films that deserve it.

Chris Stuckmann is like that fable about the crow and the peacocks. The crow hates to be like the other crows, but he loves the beauty of the peacocks. So the crow decide to pick the peacocks feathers to blend in to them, but the peacocks don't reconize him as one of them so they bully the crow. The crow then returns to his kind, but his kind refuse him because he hated them.

Chris has been transitioning from critic to filmmaker himself, so him not wanting to criticize fellow filmmakers publicly, a kind of “as you judge so you will be judged” philosophy is not a bad thing… he clearly thought it was a bad film but doesn’t take enjoyment in bashing others work like so many do. He’s doing his thing and talking about films the way he wants to at this point in his life. There are plenty of negative critics out there, why attack his character and integrity on this basis? If anything, it only reflects poorly on the people criticizing him for views. Edit: I just read Angry Joe's comment on Chris' original video, laying out his case for why Chris should still be able to review films on their own merits, and still be a filmmaker... Joe was able to do this without attacking Chris or his character... and while I still hold to my point above, I really respect Joe for how he went about saying that.

God I hate seeing people saying that criticism is just people being negative. Listen Chris, You absolute floppy dipstick of a candle. Criticism is hugely important in any job especially CREATIVES. The absolute best writers were not writing masterpieces when they first started so how did they improve? How does each book or film improve on the next one? The only way to improve is to be critical. What did work? What didn't work? What's a better way to describe this kind of event? What plot points needed more to them? What camera angle would have worked best? And so on. The only way you get those answers is either you or another gets critical of the work presented. No one is denying that the person might have put some level of effort in it. But effort alone often isn't good enough nor should it be. If something is awful you are not doing anyone a favour by saying "oh, don't worry that its complete shit as you worked really hard on it". For a childs first attempt sure motivate them. But we're not talking about a child's fridge drawing, we're talking about adults who are being paid to produce good content. Chris that kind of thinking is what leads to people dying or getting killed in real life as someone just ignoring an obvious problem or mistake and praising them instead might just the worse thing to do as they'll keep doing it again and again. Walls collapse, electrics go haywire and anything else you can think of because in your world the safety expert would go "Ah, I can't tell him this is complete and utter mistake that's going to explode in a few hours because he worked hard on it".

He's refusing to review that film, for the same reason he suddenly came out as pansexual a few years ago. Is he planning of leaving his wife and twin sons for a trans woman? Of course not. So why announce something like that to the world when there's no need to? .....To suck up to Hollywood, that's why!
