Hi this is Chrissy! I’m making Fried Oyster Mushrooms today. This is a vegan take on a southern classic that’s a great start for anyone wanting to try a vegan but familiar recipe. Let me know in the comments if you make it!
Feel like you guys should make a video explaining everything that happened and what changes are gonna happen moving forward instead of just ignoring it all together...
This comment is exactly the type of sympathetic comment BA is hoping for. These people CHOSE to apply for and accept jobs at this company knowing full well the past and risk. They get what they get.
I have mixed feelings. On one hand, Condé Nast surely doesn't deserve any support since how little they cared for their former staff but at the same time, I feel bad for the new chefs who want to share their knowledge, experience and culture with us. I do want to support them. I wish them the best. It's not their fault but also... Condé Nast... I see you.
@@totlyepic I mean if you cant at least acknowledge that he was the one directly at the leverage point of the issue then your'e being kind of extreme. Should conde nast have done something a long time before, yes. But without recognizing where the points of failure are we are doomed to repeat because we cant see them when they happen again.
You mean like most big companies probably did something racially questionable in the past and you cannot just bring down entire companies including all the employees who had nothing to do with it? Cancel culture is toxic af.
All of the wrongs Bon Appetit and Conde Nast have committed aside, Chrissy seems like a wonderful host with a culinary background BA hasn't explored on video before, and I'm personally looking forward to seeing more of her content.
I could cry when looking at my like dislike ratio. I have so many jealous people that my videos always get way more dislikes than likes. Please don't be jealous, dear mqdi
@@thechivalrouszechreeder basically allegations that Bon Appetit was underpaying their POC employees, along with not punishing offensive employees. Conde Nast (the parent company) didn't really adjust the pay appropriately and as a result most of the original Bon Appetit video people quit in protest.
This is extremely frustrating. She is literally perfect in every way possible but I’m furious that CN is about to take advantage of her. Like I want to see her cooking on any other channel. So uncomfortable
That's what priya was saying. They were asked to help hire other poc and she felt uncomfortable knowing they wouldn't be paid fairly. That's why everyone except Chris, andy and Brad left.
@@sanjanasandeep9948 Left CNE, not CN entirely. They still writing recipe for BA. The only one fully leaving the whole CN institution are Rick and Sohla. Claire and Priya? They're contracted worker, not staffers.
Do you know her contract? I'd find it hard to believe after the shitstorm that they'd hire more people on unfair contracts. They're under new management, I'd say they've made changes internally
all hate aside, i really appreciate they added a vegan chef. There aren't many vegan recipies out there that aren't toast and avocado or hummus with anything.
To Chrissy and all the talented new chefs: Looking forward to seeing what you've got in store! To BA/Conde Nast: Be transparent and acknowledge yours mistakes, instead of quietly skirting around the issues.
When a saw the thumbnail of this video, I had to do a double take. Hopefully she's not going to be pressured to be an expert in her culture's cuisine like Sohla, Andy, Priya and Rick (and Gabby?)
@@sark4786 pretty much sohla & other poc who were on BA were not being paid like the other "white" coworkers were. they have not addressed anything publicly, like an apology.
@@sark4786 1. poc means "person of color". 2. they were payed based on race, white people would get paid for videos, poc women wouldn't, Chris didnt want Sohla to succeed, etc.
Chrissy, you are spot-on about proper seasoning being critical to vegan cooking (and cooking in general.) I have had too many vegan and vegetarian meals that failed to live up to their potential because of a too-light touch with the salt and pepper. Thanks for this awesome dish!!
She seems lovely, and I love that they finally have a vegan chef. I just hope they don't fall into the trap before of like "here's our Indian-American! She'll show you how to make curry and tikka masala, and absolutely nothing else!" Like, I hope Chrissy doesn't become like the "black soul food for vegans" person.
Not dismissing any issue but every person has a talent and their specialty, maybe hers is soul food for vegans. I don't see anything wrong with that as long as she's compensated accordingly and included in the company as an equal representative.
Nothing against Chrissy or other new hosts to follow but it kinda feels like part of my family was abducted and switched out for random strangers. I do not feel like the situation was addressed or resolved in a satisfying manner at least for me as a viewer. I hope it was/is for the people actually involved.
@@angier_love3 Why come at you? I think it is great you like Chrissy. What do you think makes her the 'new' Claire though? I do not see the similarity in personality at all.
@@maddym1286 Right -- It almost emphasizes CN's problem, making you think: Why didn't they find and hire Chrissy two years ago? At least she's here now.
The family left and theyre on to better things, it just sucks conde nast couldn’t just meet their demands and would rather lose a chunk of editorial staff instead.
Dear chrissy, you are a great on camera personality and very likeable. Please start your own RU-vid channel if you haven't already. BA may destroy you. One love.
Chrissy seems like a lovely person but it's hard to be a great "addition" when the system is rotted. We all can be 99% sure that she got hired mostly because of her heritage and that is a kind of racism that we still don't need. She is a chef and deserves better than just being BA's "Hey look at us, we are diverse"-flag.
She's clearly taking a pay check to be a prop as a coloured person , to help them gloss over their brand damage that comes as a result of racism and not doing the right thing. This is like Donald Trump bring a black press secretary that says nothing about his issues.
@@AndyS52 no she didn’t. She used olive oil butter which is an all natural, vegan butter replacement. Margarine is just a whole lot of chemicals meant to replace butter (most aren’t vegan either)
Still staying around to support a soulless corporation that screwed the talent that got them where they're at now? Giving views and good comments to the people that thought a good "apology" was avoiding the wrongdoing at all costs and hiring poc in a fake virtue signaling "woke" video?
@@FinnaRealtawk2323 You do realise that being pedantic about grammar isn't a desirable personality trait? Unless you have problems understanding what people mean?
It’s so frustrating because Chrissy nailed it. But without fully addressing what went wrong transparently with the audience it makes it so hard to enjoy this content.
@@slushyislush5077 clearly I’m talking about the whole mess that they were exposed for, she’s got absolutely nothing to do with that and shouldn’t be subject to the backlash lol
@@ThisIsMyFullName whoever was complicit, I have no idea who’s still there and who isn’t, but I’m not the one giving backlash, so I’m not referring to anyone. Let me put it this way, the vegan scene is overly saturated with white chefs, and a black woman being on such a massive platform is supposed to be a game changer for her and I just think it’s shame that instead of her being celebrated, it’s overshadowed by the scandal and she doesn’t deserve that, that’s my only point
I love her personality and appreciate how she tried her best to make this recipe accesible and offer alternatives! Especially since vegan cooking is very intimidating. Yes! 👏🏽
Y’ALL. I JUST MADE THIS AND IT’S AMAZINGGGGG!! 😭😭😭 I’m taking some to my mom and grandparents right now... I made the mushrooms and honey mustard (will be making the greens after today’s grocery run). I subbed onion powder for the garlic and Old Bay for the Cajun seasoning, since I didn’t have those ingredients. I also used oat milk instead of almond and white vinegar instead of ACV also because that’s what I had. LOVE the versatility of this recipe! Last thing is I added some Crystal hot sauce to the buttermilk mix 😭😭😭😭 oh my goodness
I felt the "I guess I'll have a salad and fires" SO hard! It was the only option in so many places for so long! Still exists in some places I have to eat out. Thank you showing me fun options!
Yup... this was way too long. I usually dislike super fast cooking videos, but this was just cooking some greens and frying some mushrooms and it's nearly 20 minutes. I feel like I could have done this myself real time in less time than the video. She spent nearly a full minute garnishing the plate with three leaves of parsley.
CHRISSY'S MY NEW FAVORITE !!! She's Patient, Calm and Takes time to Educate us and I love the Stories that come with the Explanations. Very Relatable. They better take care of her at B.A. !!!
So instead of giving the past employees fair compensation you’re just going to replace them with a new diverse cast and use these said people to get more money? Diversity was never the issue, the issue was treating your past employees unfairly. I advice everyone reading this to unsubscribe so we can teach this corporate monopoly a lesson.
At this point me and 5,919,999 of my friends are declining your advice. But you do you! Refusing to watch cooking videos you don't pay a cent to see will really hit them hard.
@@michaeldonnan6767 Do you understand how RU-vid works? These videos are monetised. They lose money if fewer people watch them lmao. You 'pay' in watchtime and viewing ads. People getting cancelled and experiencing dramatic sub drops has literally ruined careers before on this platform. As you said yourself, you do you, but this is a completely valid thing for others to do.
@@michaeldonnan6767 none of their vids post-controversy have hit the 1 million mark tho so... you might be way less than 5.9 million, bud But you do you! Me and my 5 million + friends will just enjoy other cooking content! That won't hit the channel too hard, right? :)
Idk after everything that’s happened it doesn’t feel the same watching BA videos. I don’t like it lol. Is anyone else feeling like that? The vibe is off lmao
It feels like the downgraded to the food network for some reason. Nothing on the news creators or executives just something about it feels-idk Though I guess change always feels off
i really never thought bon appétit would come back with new videos. chrissy is amazing and i know we all hate condé nast, but she doesn’t deserve the dislikes this video is getting.
How come the recipe for this isn't on the website? I went to find the Collard Greens recipe (which looks amazing) and it was no where, in fact none of her stuff is on the website. Come on BA, some of us want to actually make the food.
Also, this is so formal feeling if that makes sense, much more polished and professional than the BA videos we were used to. I'm here to see how it goes. I'm excited for her perspective. It feels kinda like Food Network though....
I thought the same thing, but it’s also her first video and she could just be nervous. I feel like we saw a lot of the old TK personalities come out because they were a comfortable team that’s been working together for years. But yea I agree.
They have to start somewhere. Claire, Carla, etc were making videos even more formal than this before all the cooks were able to come together and really shine.
Brad and Andy posted a video that this week that has TWENTY-TWO thousand likes. But yall are disliking the content of the black creators to try and make "a point" to the BA corporation. Do you not see how counterproductive that is?
So I watched the whole video, and she never showed us how to make the cornbread? That was the part I was most excited for and it looks amazing at the end there!
Wow, I love Chrissy Tracey's energy and knowledge. Put her in the prime spot, I want to know more about these histories and recipes and food culture, and her perspective. "Eat that fried chicken!" We need more vegan historians.
She CHOSE to apply for and accept a job at this company knowing full well the past and risks. It blows my mind as to why any POC would consider working for them though
I like how you addressed possible substitutions throughout! Need to hit my farmers market for good mushrooms! Yum! And thank you for doing veggie recipes... I've been veg for nearly 30 years. We often don't see veggie friendly recipes on shows like these.
The ones disliking this are hurting a young lady that has nothing to do with the drama. Rate it based on the video and her not the hype. Give her a chance
This is exactly the type of sympathetic comment BA is looking for. These new POC all CHOSE to apply for and accept jobs at this company for some bizarre reason knowing full well the past and risks. They get what they get.
@@reenie4790 then if they know the past and yet choose to apply any ways then they have made a choice that they feel is good for them. At least they know and arent going into the situation ignorant.
@@reenie4790 you criticize them for working there knowing what happened in the past... doesnt sound like ignorance. Sounds like they made a choice based on where they are in their lives and they felt this can help their careers. Every one of those people that left BA have a chance to move on and use the base they started at BA to have even better careers.
@@Lucysmom26 I mean likes and dislikes are the same in the algorithm. Want to not support don't give them any watch time. Me I've paused the video at 0:00 while I scroll through the comments.
@@Lucysmom26 I don't subscribe to cancel culture, if they're doing the right thing I'll give it a chance, regardless of what their intentions are. You can take your moral absolutism somewhere else. Life is a series of complicated choices.
@@NoThankUBeQuiet You realise comments contribute to a channel's prominence in the algorithm too-very significantly in fact. That's why call to actions so often include asking for comments. All the comments you've left have contributed to pushing BA in the algorithm.
@@Hughjasslol1 ckck, them just throwing new POC cast without addresing their problem is just showing that they are still clueless of wht happened before. They aint learning anything!
@@Hughjasslol1 Well, here is the thing with blindly supporting the new chef... If she does not enjoy pay parity with her white coworkers, then nothing has changed at BA and all the actions taken by the viewers, the former hosts, etc. have been in vain, and we are still supporting a racially lopsided company by engaging in their videos through views, comments and likes. If she does enjoy pay parity with her white coworkers, then the question is why could they not give equal pay to Sohla, Rick, Priya, etc. after MONTHS of negotiations, but could afford to do so with a new chef? These are questions that need asking.
I really like Chrissy's vibe and her fun sense of humor, and as a long-time fan of BA's vegan recipes, I love that she'll be adding more delicious recipes like these to the BA library. Looking forward to more of Chrissy's smiley face and intelligent, delicious cooking videos...cheers!
I know we’re all upset about how ba treated our favorite chefs. That doesn’t mean we take it out on the new chef they are trying to right the wrongs and we can’t crucify her as she is working hard show her love.
Why would you sabotage new employees by not dealing with this correctly... I'm sure they have value to bring... but TOKENing them out there without explaining things is GROSS!
Chrissy is such a beautiful person and spirit!💓 This recipe is amazing and I totally relate to the Seventh Day Adventist and vegetarian background 😄 made this so enjoyable to watch! On top of her gorgeous 😍 personality 🖤💛💚 🇯🇲
I enjoyed all of the staff that appeared on BA, except for Rapport and It's disappointing to not see either BA or Conde take responsibility for what happened to their staff. Like others have mentioned I want to support the newcomers and nothing against them, but come on these companies could've done better.
So wonderful to see a vegan perspective on the BA team! For other viewers - consider the fact that this person has agency and can make her own decisions and even if you don't support BA you should be supporting HER content with your comments and views.
As someone trying to minimize my meat consumption, I am SO happy to see vegan recipes featured. Chrissy’s recipe sounds delicious and I loved the history and tips she provided. PAY HER!
Dear Chrissy, If you ever get to read this I wanna to tell you that I love your present style and Love of Jamaica (Jamaican here). I wish you well. I am looking forward to some Jamaican inspired dishes.
Okay Chrissy, steal my heart why don’t you?! I don’t know how I feel watching BA vids :/ but I’ll definitely be finding Chrissy’s social media bc I love her already
This looks delicious! I love her personality. Watching this feels like you're just one of her friends over that she's teaching this recipe to. I look forward to more of her content and recipes! I truly hope she's being paid fairly.
I wish BA did a video to address what had happen share some new goals with us and tease some new content or new chefs.. like we have an amazing new team up first is... and introduce them and let them share why they wanted to join THIS team.. instead of silence then.. here everyone our token BIPOC she will talk about heritage and her faith coz we need any community to try connect here.. shes beautiful and charismatic and for her first video she did well. But it was hard to connect with her because I'm so distracted by everything that hasnt been addressed. Please no one tell me they did this on another platform as I am watching on this platform and they should have done that on here where they are expecting people to support them.
Really enjoyed Chrissy’s first video for BA. Past CN issues aside, as much as most of us don’t care for them, it shows a lot about our character if we don’t welcome these new talented chefs with open arms & support. I can’t wait to see what else Chrissy shows us and I actually might be making these oyster mushrooms 😋
omg! a Black, vegan chef! the history lesson, talking about the ingredients, making amazing plant-based food -- i LOVE it. BA, I still don't like you, but i love her
So glad to see some vegan recipes brought with some informative anecdotes on varying cultures, let's hope BA keeps this up and that EVERYBODY is being treated and paid equally.
And honesty what we want to see is our old favorites. Brad and Chris and Claire and Carla and Molly and Andy. Don’t tell me any other way. Those are the ones that built the 6 million subscribers snd had 1-5 million views per video.
Oh so you shout BLM on the streets but then come to Bon Appetite to show your true colors huh? Classic. "I want to see all my white people. Not all these colored people". Typical white Liberal BS right there.
Love that they have a black girl on here now! Cool that she’s vegan. I’m trying not to be afraid of change. I would love to see more banter across the cast and more funny moments. The comedy mixed with food education is really why I subscribed! Hope the changes are better. I’d also love to see them address the issues that happened head on.
Growing up I thought it was “colored greens” and thought, as a white person, that it was offensive to ask for them. I really enjoyed them...you can imagine the conundrum this created.
People up in the comments complaining. Listen, I get the issues but if you decide to unsubscribe then stop going to any fast food restaurant to show their employees support as well. I worked for a fast food company for over four years and got no vacation or sick pay, and only a 25 cent raise once the entire time. Just don’t be a hypocrite. Also, these are unbelievably delicious 🤤. Thank you for the recipe Chrissy!
can people stop disliking new chefs coming on to BA and the fact that this channel is creating more diversity in their content and just enjoy it? like if you don't like it or don't want to watch, THEN DON'T. simple. be kind or say nothing at all.
Hey there! I really do enjoy this recipe thoroughly, and I think your daughter will too! Let me know if you make it:) BTW, the pans are Caraway Brand-- they are non-toxic non-stick ceramic!
I honestly love her vibe, love her haircut, love her stories, love that she’s bringing something new to the conversation. Liking for Chrissy, keep it up!
