@@Robin3615 It's almost always the most honest answer. "I believe in a god because my parents did, and they taught me to do the same when I was little."
exactly. that, and also depending on where they were born. if it was in china, would they still be a christian? it's possible, but is an exception to what is observable, generally
This call here, if anything, is a perfect example how faith stunts the capacity and desire for knowledge and curiosity in people. No critical thinking needed when "god did it"
@@Mdynan "That there wasn't Nothing before everything existed?" There is no such thing as nothing, there is always something. Why do You want everyone to know You don't understand this ?
@@Mdynan There is no science that says that there was ever a state of nothing. In the classical version of the Big Bang there was no time before the singularity, therefore there was no "before." However, there is no consensus that the Big Bang was the beginning of the universe anyway. Actually, the physics community is turning away from that supposition more and more. See Penrose's cyclic conformal cosmology hypothesis, for example. Anyway, I'm indulging your pretensions to credit you with any knowledge of science. Nobody who knows anything about cosmological physics would ever write the line you posted.
@@RoddHarding How does God create something from nothing? This has the exact same problems as talked in the video. Also the caller literally answered yes to the question if God created from nothing.
@@RoddHardingconfused? 🤦🤦🤦🤣 the caller was confused from the offset and admitted certain criteria that showed he was wrong about his position. He made a claim about atheists saying everything came from nothing when that's not the case. That claim is a Christian one. The caller wasn't being honest anyway and it's a typical behavior they demonstrate when cornered. Anything to keep being in their comfortable lie.
I wonder how much time could be saved by adding a choice menu to the call system? "If your reason is _Look at the trees!_ press one." "If your reason is _Something can't come from nothing_ press two."
True, @@sparki9085, true. It would be tough to sift calls which could be real discussions (or at least entertaining) from the time wasters. "Okay, our next caller is a number three." "Hi, thanks for taking my call-" "'I don't know, therefore god' is wrong, thank you, next call please."
It reminds me of an old Dave Allen joke. The Pope and an atheist are arguing. The Pope says "you atheists are like a man in a room without any light searching for a black cat that is not there." The atheist replies "I think you too are like a man in a room without any light, searching for a black cat that isn't there. The only difference between us is that you think you have found him."
…and can describe the cat’s coat, down to texture, length, shininess; its eyes down to the precise shade of the iris and how it works when exposed to varying degrees of light; its vocal range, including pitch and so forth; etc. without ever finding let alone producing the cat that turns out to also have wings, of the angelic kind.
@@cambriaofthevastoceans6721 But it depends how you interpret the cats in the bible, or alternatively, you're not interpreting the cats in the bible correctly... or whatever other BS tactics thiests use to defer their burden of proof.
Shannon is a perfect example of the lack of a decent general education in the USA and a heavy dependency on religious teachings. He is just not mentally equipped to have these converstations.
I would like to acknowledge that Shannon was 100% honest and accurate when he said "I am simple-minded ".he even provides evidence his statement was true.
I don’t know why theists often use the argument ‘something can’t come from nothing’. If that’s true they’re pretty much ruling out a god. Especially the god of the bible. That literally says in the beginning there was nothing, and then god created stuff. Assuming there is a creator god. Either he created something from nothing. Which debunks their argument. Or he created something out of something that already existed. If that something already existed without being created by a god. Then god is not required for things to exist. Which debunks their claim god is the creator of everything.
@@Mdynan There is literally nobody in the scientific world who claims that anything came from nothing-- other than Lawrence Krause, who confused the whole topic by equating the quantum vacuum field to the concept of philosophical "nothing," a totally erroneous identification that annoys the shit out of every intelligent person who discusses this issue.
Sometimes it takes wholistic approach to understand the the immensity and absolutely immeasurable lord of heavens and earth, infinity just and merciful, and many other questions surround how does God the creator keeps all created things in existence and made a good world and created for the glorification of God himself in his solemnity.
@Catholictomherbert Explains nothing. More gobbledygook from a "believer." More simple mindedness, catholictomherbert. Oh, you might want to re-learn grammar and punctuation.
@@Catholictomherbert What evidence do you have that proves your god-creator exists? You describe a very egocentric entity, if he created everything just for his glorification. It stands to reason he should be glorifying and loving on the beings he made, not finding ways to trip them up and punish them- you know, like allowing satan to exist, and killing nearly everyone on the planet because satan was getting the best of them. If I were going to pick a god to worship, it wouldn't be that one.
@@Catholictomherbert So many assertions. So little evidence. "infinity just and merciful" suggests we don't even share a common understanding of the language.
@@Catholictomherbert And sometimes it just takes an abundance of wishful thinking. So the more fundamental question is: how do we tell the difference? You don't seem to be trying.
Same for black disciples, spiritists, witches, soothsayers, hindus, mormons, masons, and just about 2/3 of the worlds population. Glad we can discriminate so freely without consequence.
Oh my. He says he's been seeking 'truth' then launches into the 'look at the trees bro' as his best argument for magic. How are there humans this STUPID in reality? What century is this? His friends and family have failed him miserably.
As an atheist my entire life, I’ve always been astounded how anyone with even a slight hint of intellect, could possibly believe that “magical sky fairies” exist w/o being able to give any shred of verifiable data or empirical, evidence!
As a former Christian, I’ll tell you, if you’re trusting enough as a child, you can be easy to manipulate and indoctrinate. Deconversion wasn’t easy for me.
It's like all of these Bible thumpers heard these reasons from the parents, preachers, or family. And they think it's mind blowing. If that blows your mind, wait till you try to actually use thought and reason. Actually don't. It's a bad idea. They may hurt themselves
It's just years and years of people repeating what's been repeated. Everything is always chalked up "'god's' plan". We were trained not to question "'god's plan".

no he seems like a troll luaghing at wasting matt and tevens time and when called out on doing that he hangs up and runs away like the pethetic little religious cultist he is, religious people are such cowards.
Man, truthfully, I think Matt and Jimmy didn't know how to handle this guy here. Coming from Waco I'm telling you right now so many people are just so dumb you can't talk to them like they're normal. You gotta truly get on their level and talk to them like children. Edit: Shannon was clearly laughing because he was uncomfortable. I'm sorry but talking to this guy like he was an adult was cruel. You genuinely need to be talking to him like he's 3, he could not understand any logic higher than that.
Why do they keep using the something from nothing fallacy? They are constantly corrected, that is what nobody thinks in the scientific world, whether it is the beginning of our universe or life on Earth. It is only theist that believe they were magically puffed into existence. I really don’t like being tarred with that brush.
It is a defense mecahnism, the know that what they are told to believe is ridiculous, so the only thing they can do is project it on others so they cant feel as bad for doing it.
They're all dishonest and they cannot answer honestly because they think their God is testing them. It's like they're in shock because they think a lightning bolt will come down from their God if they answer against their god's wishes.
I was watching a the line show and jehovas rang my doorbell during it. So i respectfully but honestly told them what i think of their god and why. Doesnt feel nice to offend people, but felt nice to be honest
I grew up in SC, its about 80% of the population there. So good on Georgia. Pardon me while I drink myself into an early grave because the vast majority of the US is without hope
The problem here is that the caller is not on anywhere near the same level of understanding about logic and logical thinking as Matt is. I enjoy the "something came from nothing because of reality."
@@peterbartley7183 I’m saying Matt contradicts himself a lot and moves the goal post a lot because at the end of the day, Even if we don’t know what God it is or Gods it’s either two things , he universe is infinite or its not and if its not then it takes a intelligent mind to create it and Matt has said multiple times he doesn’t know what would convince him but thinks he can sit on panels all day about how God doesn’t exist??? That’s insanity
Please be aware that when you say, "...I am just a simple-minded...." you are basically saying that being "simple" and "ignorant" gives you a pass to believe in a concept with virtually zero actual evidence. Frankly, I do not allow you that "pass"; I insist that you give actual evidence, however simply you can demonstrate. I will not allow you to get away with being ignorant, especially today with so much information available to you.
That was painful. Shannon was so unprepared and became lost very quickly. Not knowing where to go gave him nothing to say. All we heard was crickets and the cogs in his head grinding to a halt.
Claims are not proof, Shannon. Proof is something that can be falsified, but claims are assertions that are not supported by evidencE (mass noun, no plural). Claims backed up by claims backed up by claims backed up by claims backed up by claims backed up by claims backed up by claims are a waste of time.
It's actually a very interesting question to ask if actual "nothing" is a thing. The moment you try to define "nothing" you give it properties that would turn it into something. So the mere fact of defining "nothing" it becomes "something".
I wish Matt wouldn’t get so pissed off. But then I think, “He’s been dealing with myth-addled mindsets for over 2 decades!!… he has every reason to flame these fools.” He’s so patient at first. Until he isn’t. 😂
He'll go wherever the science leads? The science shows that the universe and life most likely originated naturally and wasn't poofed into existence by some omnipotent entity from another dimension.
I think the question Shannon needs to hear is: "Do you know what you believe?" He seems to know that he believes something, but he doesn't seem to have taken the time to think about what it is he actually believes. Sure, he believes that a god did something, but I don't think he has really thought much beyond that.
The only one mistake Matt did was about the laugh meaning here, we was sincerely scared to death cause what the caller has heard is the truth he has ignored all his life
I hate the brain in a vat analogy. Technically we ARE a brain in a vat made of flesh and bones. Everything we experience about reality comes through those brains.
It doesn't matter anyway, if we were in a simulation that just means we're trying to figure out what is true in the simulation. Science would still be the best method, we still wouldn't be justified believing things without evidence... It's a pointless thing to bring up.
Its the question of hard solipsism. You can't prove that you are not the only person in your reality. It must be presupposed that there are other people and you interact with them.
I don't know what proofs for a god would look like, but I am convinced that Shannon is proof there is much room for improvement in our education system.
He said the truth when he said. Im very simple minded, you can see him on his PC with a MAGA hat on, and a desktop image of a Flat Earth on his screen.
I feel bad for Shannon. He's so indoctrinated and lost. I honestly don't think he dishonest entirely, just as an interlocutor, because I don't think he has the logic education to know the fallacies he's partaking in. Another problem with the American education system, it's literally let down an entire generation of people who had to learn logic on their in their 30s 40s and 50s rather than living a life using logic as a tool to move through it.
@@FightXScience-wh6kx you absolutley can, indoctrination doesnt have to be religious. You can be indoctrinated with politics, race, ideology, lack of belief , because at the end indoctrination means teaching a group or person to accept things uncritically
Why did all the alleged devine events happen 2000yrs ago in the middle east conveniently when there was no modern recording equipment and why did it happen no where else and why has it never been repeated since?
All of these questions being used by theists were from their pastor or sunday school teacher. They 9 times out of 10 have never read it all the way through and haven't studied unbiasedly.
I can't start at: "let's start at creation...", because already that makes no sense at all to me. The loaded word "creation" implies creator, and something created, and performed with an intent. What evidence exists for any of that, right out the gate
I don’t get why it’s so confusing. Atheists discern truth in the same way that everyone does except they keep it consistent when reviewing the claims of god
How you make a truth claim without a god... Hoooly shit, what is with religious people being so vehemently willfully ignorant i just cant even believe it anymore. I was raised in the church and going to a private christian school by the way, but having the ability to think freely as an sdult then listening to this stuff after over a decade it almost terrifies me...
Same old, same old, from Shannon. We’ve heard his unreasonable gullibility from countless theists over the years ? No matter how much his thinking was exposed to be irrational and improbable, his dogmatic theories pervade. You just know that nothing is getting through to him. He is a fool!
You guys might as well have been speaking an alien language to this guy! In the future you may want to take precautions when dealing with people with shall we say, limited intellectual acument?
They really put a whoopin' on that little boy. Son, one day you will be a man and you will learn how to be self sufficient and how to seek the truth for yourself and not just go on what mommy and daddy told you.
22:20 I don't know what the statement "Higgs boson is the smallest particle we can measure" is supposed to mean. Size isn't a valid concept with fundamental particles. If you actually mean it's the LIGHTEST particle we can measure, that's not true either - Higgs boson is the second heaviest Standard Model particle (top quark is heavier).
Perfect example of someone who has never thought deeply about their own belief system who therefore lacks any assembly of a reasonable argument for it.
Creation Ex Nihilo is a post biblical assertion from the late 2nd early 3rd century CE. Genesis 1 describes a potter at his wheel shaping with already existing materials, and it's shockingly similar to other southwest Asian creation myths.
Shannon. If you by a pure chance should read this: What Matt and Jimmy was trying to show you is that you are NOT seeking the truth here. Youre holding a position that you do not have a reason to hold in the first place. And then you want science to prove it wrong. You never had a good reason to believe in god in the first place. If you wanted the truth you should be an atheist and demand that theists proves god to exist. Because that is how the burden of proof works. The default stance must always be that X doesnt exist until we have evidence of X to exist. So by default god doesnt exist as far as we know until theres evidence that he does. And dont think you have such evidence because no man in the history of mankind have ever had any such evidence to the collective knowledge of mankind.
I hate calls like this because it's clear that this man is not very bright. Also, with the whole something came from nothing thing, the best response is the one Dan Barker gives - if you believe there's a god, then something did not come from nothing is because god is something. So where did god come from?
let us assume that the caller is neither a hypocrite nor a troll. how to determine what is true? evidence and experiment that supports observed reality and certainly not by believing the mythology books of ancient people or what your pastor and apologist told you about the 'creation' around you.
It is so stupid Matt when you inadvertently make a joke , causing somebody to laugh and you get low key upset with them for laughing. then don't make jokes. People can't help reacting when they think something is funny for any reason so you might want to cut people a break and not be so sensitive all the time and also some of the ways that you talk to people you only talk to them that way because you know you won't get smacked in the face and other areas of the country like say in a bar if you were to start talking like that and calling people names and getting upset and impatient with them you probably get punched in the mouth. Why do you think you have the right to get so angry at someone and so vociferous just because they don't know what they're talking about or they don't know what you are talking about you would have made a really lousy Professor or a teacher because you're too impatient
Why? The guy, by Matt's own declaration, is extremely new to this kind of discussion. The bar is so incredibly low for Matt that even if the interlocuter is trying their best it's a damn near considered a miracle if Matt can control himself long enough to get through the call. Expect better.
I honestly think he didn't know what to think. A little push in the right direction... Hes just come to the realisation that all he knows as true is wrong and that can be very unsettling...his mind was literally blowing apart and giving him something to hold onto would have been kinder.
