Richard Rohr, as a Catholic priest and Franciscan Friar, will offer a concise history of how Western Christianity once had, soon lost, tried to retrieve, and now is roundly rediscovering its own traditional understanding of unitive consciousness (which was our word for non-dual thinking). The Christian contemplative mind was usually a subtext, and yet it was always clearly there too, and much closer to the surface, but only for those exposed to the mystical base that was revealed in the Gospel of John, the Desert Fathers and Mothers, the Celtic and monastic traditions, and what was generally referred to as the apophatic or wisdom stream of Christianity. These were our many saints and mystics. This possibility was brought to the fore by Thomas Merton in the middle of the last century, and is now flowing in many positive directions. It is now our task to rediscover the pre-Enlightenment Christianity that reveled in "the cloud of unknowing", what some called "learned ignorance", and the very notion of Mystery itself. Only when we got into competition with rationalism and secularism, did we adopt this rather recent mania for certitude and a very limited kind of scientific knowing. Almost the entire history of Protestantism emerged in this period, and thus the contemplative mind is an utterly new revelation for them, and frankly for all of us, as we again learn to be comfortable living on the edge of both the knowable and the unknown.
Fr. Richard Rohr is a globally recognized ecumenical teacher bearing witness to the universal awakening within Christian mysticism and the Perennial Tradition. He is a Franciscan priest of the New Mexico Province and founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Fr. Richard’s teaching is grounded in the Franciscan alternative orthodoxy-practices of contemplation and self-emptying, expressing itself in radical compassion, particularly for the socially marginalized. Fr. Richard is the author of numerous books, including Everything Belongs, Adam’s Return, The Naked Now, Breathing Under Water, Falling Upward, Immortal Diamond, and Eager to Love: The Alternative Way of Francis of Assisi.

Yes. Me also. God is gracious to us. Even when we think we know something. Jesus said on the cross, Father forgive them, they don’t Know what they are doing. Salvation maybe begins when we say, I don’t know. Christianity has to be more then the accumulation of information, That I can rap my ego around and become, THE WALKING BIBLE!! 🤣. My theology has become very simple, “God is love, and those who serve him must serve him in love”, 1John 4:7. In that I can, move with my evangelical friends, and my Catholic friends, without trying to fix them. It’s a very restful place to be.(John B).

I was raised a Catholic but then experienced a profound kundalini or spiritual awakening and had a direct encounter with Source Light. The Spirit I encountered was ecstatic, joyful, blissful, loving, and so so good! I still love the teachings of Jesus and believe he was an Enlightened Sage who taught the path to awakening and the Kingdom of G-d. I don't identify with any religion or specific teaching but still study Christian mystics, the Yogis, Sri Aurobindo, Michael Washburn, Ken Wilber, and Spiral Dynamic. I don't hold to any labels, belief systems, or ideologies anymore. I think Jesus came to unburden people from dualistic rules and adherence to a specific religion.

Already a fan of Father Rohr. This talk was very well received. Liked the Deus - Zeus connection and that when Christianity moved from the catacombs to the basilica after 300AD, the requirements of an imperial religion imposed a concrete christ, a christ who could help maintain order. Also like that early Franciscans taught the first bible was creation, some 14 billion years ago. Peace.

Fantastic. I wish all Christians were like this. I have just been talking to a born again evangelist who has a very confined idea of what he calls Truth. Everybody outside of his small tribe is condemned for eternity. I pointed out that, even in his belief system, that decision wouldn't be his to make. In the end, any religion or philosophy is only a vehicle to help us uncover the Ultimate Reality. We only use vehicles as long as they are useful. We should not cling to them or be afraid to change to another form of transport, even none at all. The idea of the dance in this talk meant much more to me than the usual Trinity teaching. As a Buddhist, I am encouraged to ask questions. Doubt is an essential part of each person's journey. It's good to know that there are Christians who understand the benefit of seeking rather than allowing the ego to take over.

This is a great overview of non-dual or unitive thinking as it developed in Christian tradition. To ground this non-dual approach in theology of Jesus see my last book, Healing The Divide: Recovering Christianity's Mystic Roots. In that book I explore Oriental Orthodox non-dual theology of Jesus (Miaphysite in Greek). In my book I translate Miaphysite in the English phrase: The Jesus Paradox. This theology was developed by The Alexandrian Mystics (Alexandrian Fathers) between the 3rd and 5th centuries. #ChristianMysticism #CenteringPrayer #JesusParadox -Amos Smith

From here, it most certainly seems to be a direct non-dual teaching.

Reverend Eslam Jesus was a man like any other man/woman but he Realized his True Nature during his lifetime, ie, "Self-Realization", as many others have throughout the history of Mankind. His words were "Pointers" to who/what we Really Are, right Here, right NOW. You quote Shunyamurti who quotes Ramana Maharshi who "Pounted" to the same "One without a Second" that Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj did. Just like Jesus, Maharaj said to Be the "I AM" which is prior to thoughts, memories, associations, perceptions, and conceptions. This "Stateless-State" is "where" your "self" dissolves into SELF - Pure Awareness ITSELF. In Zen, it is called the "Gateless Gate". Religions are for the masses until those few with "Ears to Hear" look Within, Realize who/what they Really Are, and Awaken in "Self-Realization". There is no place to go because we Are Already "THAT Which Can Not Be Described". The individual self is an Illusion. "We never left the mythological Garden of Eden - a metaphor for our Illusory separation from God, SELF, True Nature, Source, et al. This "separation" occurred approximately 200 - 500 thousand years ago when early Man's brain evolved through the formation of the Pre-frontal Cortex which gave us a very advanced survival "tool" allowing us to plan for tomorrow (future) by comparing our observations in the Present with our past memories - birth of the Ego, an Illusory mental construct which allowed us to "create" a separate "reality" with thoughts about Reality As IT Is. Separation was and IS an illusion. There is only NOW - the Ever-Moving, Ever-Present FLOW of Awareness ITSELF and we ARE IT! Peace Be with You... Namaste' 💖

Thankfully, am not hearing too much talk like that anymore and have found a wonderful Franciscan community -- All are welcome here is the their song. As are all God's children welcome home. This approach tacitly -- implicitly -- flattens out all differences and denies the very necessity of differentiation. Simply put, it denies that some ideas are better than others, some ways of being better than other ways of being, some actions preferable to others. What underlies it, and what it turns inevitably leads to, is nihilism. And Christian nihilism is as insidious and dangerous as any other kind.
@NonValidZulu

It doesn't deny the necessity of differentiation at all, rather is highlights that under the surface there isn't differentiation even though the way we live necessitates the concept of duality. It's nihilistic only if viewed through a nihilistic lens, the other way to view it is that by being one we all have a purpose, but ultimately these are both different sides of the same coin, the only difference is perspective, and as mentioned in the video with dualistic thinking we pick a side and view things from our own bias.

I haven't practice it since I was 18...Father Rohr just confirms everything I thought since I was 12!!! he is wonderful and intelligent yet very respectful. Deus comes from the word Deva (Deoa) which means a light being or a being of light. It's unfortunate that the other half, the feminine divine called Devi was not accepted into Greek thinking. Non-duality is also the fact that the masculine and the feminine exist in every entity or being in creation. At the atomic level, it's the Protons, Neutrons and Electrons that represent the Trinity of Vishnu, Shiva & Brahma respectively. The energy that pervades the Trinity is represented as Shakti or Devi.

Hello Richard I hope you read this comment. I bet you read these passages the same way. I have not listened to the whole video yet. I wanted to share this with you and I am wondering whether or not you mention Jeremiah Chapter one yet in the video. I just wanted to copy and paste something I wrote down to remember. God told Jeremiah the prophet in the first chapter of Jeremiah that he knew Jeremiah (consciousness) before he was in his mother's belly (body). God told Jeremiah "Before I formed you in the womb I set you apart." and God said, "You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you." God is telling Jeremiah here that Jeremiah (consciousness) will go to "whom he is sent (body) and he will speak the words God commands him to (shared consciousness). God said, "I set you apart from the whole (one) and I sent you Jeremiah (consciousness) to whom you are (body). He then told Jeremiah (consciousness) that he made Jeremiah to be a prophet to nations(body). God told Jeremiah that the words that come from Jeremiah's mouth belong to God (one), Jeremiah said. "And the LORD said to me, “Behold, I have put my words in your mouth." and the Lord then said, "Do not be afraid of the looks on their faces for I am with you beside you." God is with Jeremiah. (shared consciousness) We are told that we are set apart from the one in the womb. The "all is one" concept is ancient Hindu wisdom and can be explained also by using quantum science. Quantum entanglement is a foundational concept in QM that means all matter is entangled as one. The concept of all is one was proven over a hundred years ago! But so controversial that the Nobel in Physics was not awarded until 2022. Today many people do not pay much attention to the paranormal but empirical evidence of a collective consciousness exists. Anomalies like remote viewing have been backed by decades of research and statistical analysis. Things are changing quickly. People are seeing science as the "new religion." And that religion is the way many people account for the things they do not yet understand. When I read Jeremiah Chapter one, this message seems clear.

Non dualistic thinking can open some dark places. Something that if Richard talked about could result in turning people away from him. Like, what if he brought up the world view of a pedophile? To think about that in a non dualistic way is to be able to consider that it may not be wrong. A lot of people find that very disturbing. And stealing? And murder? How do we know if these things are wrong if we adopt non dualistic thinking?

@@nickromero7140 and Travis Ritt - Mark's explanation goes some way there, but RR also makes it clear in his other writing and speeches that he is not looking at anything in an either/or perspective, but usually in a both-and perspective, so to come to your point Nicholas, the pedophile situation is both a problem and an opportunity - his actions are a serious problem to his victims as well as to himself in the karma kind of way in which we reap what we sow, and the fact that he has lost his 'true self' (his self that finds its identity in God), but his problem can also become an opportunity for his redemption when he confronts his actions and their consequences for his victims as well as himself ( I use 'he' advisedly, realising it could be 'she'), and it becomes the platform for greater self-awareness, and greater awareness of the 'other' who is not really 'other', but another part of himself against whom he has violated. Similar could be said of the stealing and murder topics, and any other violations against 'self' and others that we commit.
@alexacramer608

I would say that the only reason an "opportunity" exists is because of the love and grace of God, but that the "opportunity" is not inherent in an act of pedophilia. The act in and of itself is inherently evil, which is a dualistic statement that I believe is correct. A miracle occurs when Christ redeems that situation. I disagree that dualistic thinking is a lower level of thinking...

Richard Rohr quote highlights from this video: “I'm convinced the very word ‘prayer’ originally meant a different operating system.” “I don't think I see any evidence that Jesus ever systematically taught what we would call ‘nondual thinking’, but he did exemplify it, and that's even better.” “How we in organized Christianity got in trouble is we largely, overwhelmingly read the words of Jesus-who was talking nondually-with a dualistic mind … Western Christianity largely became a PhD in dualistic thinking.” “Once you need to prove that you're right and someone else is wrong, that you're the in-group and they're the out-group, what you have is the dominance of ego. And, once the ego is center stage, there is no possibility of contemplation … It’s the death of the contemplative mind.” “A civilization cannot survive if it is actively involved in hatred toward its own spirituality.” “‘Faith’ meant comfortably not knowing, and we turned that around 180 degrees into being certain about everything.” “Once you're inside the enchanted universe where everything is granted subjectivity, you’re never lonely again.”

Thank you, Father! Yes, what a great speech. It appears that apophatic theology is the reasoning or what is considered left-brained thinking and cataphatic theology is intuitive or right-brained thinking. Whole-brain thinking integrates these two modes of thought. When we do not integrate these two modes of thought we can be considered as being "not all there." Up until now, being "not all there" has been the way of Roman Catholicism. I fully relate with you. If we stay stuck in reason or literalism we will be afraid to employ whole-brain thinking and we are "not all there." This is the root problem with traditional Roman Catholics today. If we do not see into and through the language and visuals in front of us (words have varied senses of the meaning) we remain trapped (koan: WORDS ARE TRAPS) and we do not pick up the essence of what is being communicated. Essence is picked up from heart-to-heart or intuition-to-intuition communication. Those who are restricted to apophatic or strictly left-brained thinking will miss the essence of much that is communicated to them. Many people are afraid of their intuitions. When we miss the essence we may start arguments.

Rohr’s doublespeak and web of tangled thought is very hard to follow unless you have taken the lure. Then he drags you wherever he, with his great knowing mystic mind wants to take you. You are the fish, he is the fisher. In order to do this the first thing he has to do is disavow identity, or the first premise of logic and reasoning A is A. He calls it dualistic thinking but it is really monistic for it must start with a thing is what it is. This of course leads to A not being Not A. That is not dualism. Rohr’s is dualistic thinking because the first thing it does is sets off the spiritual from the material, or the mind/body problem. In this dualism Rohr goes with the Beginning-less Mind and in doing so will eventual deny substitutionary atonement and that Jesus and the Christ are not the same thing, Jesus being the historical man and Christ the incarnation of God in all matter. How does he know all these things? It’s mystical and you can’t understand it unless you enter the mystical mind. Let go! Caught!

A swing and a miss. No, human life doesn't go on forever. We do though undergo a protracted reincarnation cycle that can span thousands of years - but it eventually draws to a close when our consciousnesses have evolved to a point where we understand and live the maxim - I am that, thou art that, all this is that, and that alone is. That alone is consciousness. All that exists is consciousness expressing through energy and matter. The universe is one big recycling plant for matter and energy. We recycle. Our lightly-bound, individuated consciousness transits in and out of form during periods of rest and activity - making its way up the proverbial ladder toward a fully integrated/illumined state. And once it arrives, it re-merges back into the absolute - the infinite sea of consciousness that supports all that is - and we cease to exist as individuated units of consciousness. You need to lose all the religious/theological undertones/overtones/trappings. They are all contrived and designed to mislead and to control. Your bible is mythology run amuck. Toss it. There is nothing knowable that theists refer to as god. If there is a sentient singularity that belies the phenomenal, we cannot know it as individuated points of consciousness as it would necessarily be unbounded and thus, outside the matrix of our ability to know which is predicated on boundedness. You are a slave to personal invention / of syrupy-sounding psycho-theological constructs that entice people like cotton candy and render you so sophic sounding and eminently benevolent. You officially know nothing even though your rhetoric outlines an expanded understanding - which you compress into your theological strong box which is rank fiction. You need to lose religion entirely along with your theistic bent. Try on the quantum mechanics of consciousness which explains all in non-perjorative terms and absent your new age mumbo jumbo. Watch the two short videos on consciousness by Dr John Hagelin for a starter in which he equates the unified field to consciousness. You need to escape the primordial swamp of theism. It no longer becomes you. It is wholly childish and inane.

I struggle to follow RR where he talks about the trinity and the circling dance - how he comes to see God as triune, and why God needs to be understood this way. The only way I can regard God as a threesome is via the following: 1. Once, 14 billion years ago, God was all there was. ONE! 2. Then God manifested as a material-physical version of itself, as a population of humans. (And perhaps non-human animals also; maybe even vegetables and minerals were part of God-manifest also - the whole material universe perhaps.) TWO! 3. Two thousand years ago, out of the human population, arrived one who had an understanding of who we were and what our purpose was in God's plan, the understanding that we individuals were part of the physical manifestation of God. Through this understanding, Jesus was able to show us God; to represent God (either version) to the rest of us. By virtue of this role, Jesus earned the title of the Son of God. (While we might also see ourselves, in a way, as daughters and sons of God, Jesus is the only capital-S Son of God.) THREE! In other words, is the trinity then a model of divinity that portrays the following aspects of God? 1. God - the original timeless-spaceless source being from which everything that has since existed, came; the one who was traditionally called "God the Father" in times when sexism was condoned. 2. God the Son - Jesus, the awaited one; the man who lived in the physical two thousand years ago and whose identity formed back then continues to linger in the oneness of the unmanifested God. 3. God the Holy Spirit - all of us, living humans (and perhaps others) currently on this physical plane who make up God-manifest. Is this why most believers see God as a trinity?

It's amazing how many people here can be disillusioned by Richard Rohr. I've never seen someone make so many assertions about the teachings of Christ and the Bible without actually using the Bible. Everything he is teaching is simply reading the Gospels through the lens of New Age Universalism...but the Bible wasn't written by 20th century hippies, so that is precisely the wrong way to read and interpret the Scriptures. You have to read the Bible through the lens of the Bible. Read it multiple times from cover to cover, then cross-reference the Bible with itself. There aren't commentaries on the Bible that were written in the days of the Bible, so let the Bible speak for itself.

The Richard Rohr Christmas Cake!!! 😍🎊🎂 Complete with the Richard Rohr 🎅 on top, smiling, and in a slightly condescending "oh bless you you Orthodox lot, time to move on and put your infantile dogmatic faith to one side and except all the wonderful (itching ear) gifts I have to humbly and charismatically and sincerely share with you" tone... 😉😂 I jest. But I'm serious. No one has the right to reinvent or disregard the revealed and known and lived tradition X "Tradition is the Life of the Holy Spirit within the Church" - Vladimir Lossky

Isn’t this just Gnosticism with a Christian label on it?

The most difficult struggle of my life, witch has been riddled with tragedy, loss, and suffering has been with my attachment to having an intellect. I used to read the bible and see it one way until life broke me down so low that I lost all confidence in what I thought I knew. Now I read it and receive a completely different understanding. It starts from the very beginning of the bible - the knowledge of good and evil and is beautifully, though arduously, shown in the story of Job. When we think we know what is right and wrong not only are we unteachable but we loose our connection to the divine mystery of life. He is defining beautifully where Christianity has missed the point of the teachings of Jesus. I see a few teachers emerging that are helping unify science and theology and it is wonderful to witness. I came back to God through physics, NDE stories and Eckhart Tolle teachings and I am so grateful for the suffering that humbled me to open me up to learning rather than showing everyone how smart I was. My ego still messes with me constantly but at least I can recognize and maybe someday the dang thing ill give it a rest, lol.

The teachings of Jesus, Christine? If you read the Bible honestly, and the words of Jesus regarding Himself in particular, you would weep for your lost condition and ask Him to save you. We accept Him or reject Him - we do not attempt to fit Him into our own preferred religion. This is NOT Christianity. This is NOT the True Gospel. It is a Satanic counterfeit. Please believe me. Your very soul is at stake - and I care.

@@deniss2623 I said they lead me back to God. The Lord definitely works in mysterious ways. A piece of advice for you would be to find a different approach because if you would have said that to me before I came back to our Lord I would have just thought you sound like a parrot. Sometimes you have to share the truth in ways that people can receive it. What seems perfectly logical to you may not seem so to someone who is not where you are in your faith.

Thank you, Richard Rohr. Really connecting to this teaching... a movement away from dualistic (right and wrong) thinking to contemplation and contemplative prayer -- contentment for me and a new more profound meaning of what it means to rest! His words remind me of a favorite poet, Rumi, "Out beyond our ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I will meet you there..."
