Jesus' advice and example on how to live *in addition* to how to believe in Him, reveal the true Christian ie "they shall know you by your fruits". Many so called Christians today- (primarily certain politically involved Evangelicals driven by power and greed) are morally and spiritually repulsive. Jesus protected the vulnerable and ate with underdogs and scapegoats of society. He discouraged wealth, especially passive wealth from rent/lease, or interest. He had no beef with the state apparatus, rather he called out the entrenched religious leaders who cared more about rules than people. He sought to understand and truly loved people, and he basically put the Sermon on the Mount stuff about love as the priority commandment over the OT, as He fulfilled the law. He convinced people to leave their families and travel with Him in an itinerant band who freely shared resources and was egalitarian toward women. (Hell, even Paul had a female disciple who followed him, cut her hair and dressed as a man).

I think the majority of slaves would be from foreign conquered and captured peoples. Bringing people to unfamiliar surroundings keeps them more docile , also they have a look of being foreign about them . And it seems slavery back then was more of an indentured servitude which they could transcend becoming a Roman citizen . Our modern notions of recreational sex and slavery ... Also it's in the media all the time, but it isn't real. There are not a lot of fundamentalists in the US, American Christians tend to read the last chapter of the bible and stop there. Evangelicals, for instance, are often called fundamentalist christians by the media but you can't even classify them by church because the variation is so great, and american religion is so nebulous that the churches and what is taught are always changing. The most extreme right-wingers seem to be atheists, or only recent converts to denominations like orthodoxy or catholicism. Compared to Europe, it's nothing. Americans are so much more moderate and tolerant than Europeans, you guys are true savages.

Languages don't match each other neatly. In the Greek translation of Hebrew scriptures that was around when gospels were written (septuguint aka LXX as alleged 70 scholars) the Hebrew word that could mean young woman generally got translated into a Greek word specifically meaning virgin. Matthew's gospel was written by someone very keen to show Jesus as fulfilment of prophesy, and as a user of Greek likely tried to get an origin story for Jesus that fitted the version of Old Testament they were reading, and so the birth must be of a virgin.

That in no way implies that I do not regard other issues related to the incident as important. Also note that this was one of two comments I left on the video (because I did not want either of the points I wanted to make to get lost under the other). My other comment was focused on the video creator's underlying approach rather than on this particular incident, but is relevant to why I responded to the video's handling of this incident the way I did. Something definitely looks wrong about how the woman was brought before Jesus and the man was not. But even in the worst-case scenario, if a woman who was previously completely innocent was intentionally encouraged to commit adultery as part of a scheme to set a trap for Jesus, she was still guilty of a sin when she succumbed to the encouragement. Further, if Jesus' opponents were looking to set a woman up to be caught in adultery to set a trap for Jesus, the most logical way to do it was to take advantage of a situation where a woman was already at least strongly suspected of being in an adulterous relationship or was already behaving in a way that suggested a likelihood that she would be susceptible to sexual advances from a man other than her husband. One possible scenario is that the man was offered immunity in exchange for participating in a scheme to catch the woman in the act of adultery. If the situation was along those lines, the fact that the woman was a victim of a trap is important from the perspective of legal justice, but has little or no bearing on the seriousness of the woman's sin from a religious perspective. (This parallels how the man's apparently not having been charged with a crime does not make him any less a sinner from a religious perspective, and likely involved a conspiracy that made him guilty of additional sins besides adultery.)
