Watching her Debut era always makes me giggle. This song, her endings to At Last, her O Holy Night, and her Sound of Music renditions are all the prime examples.
@@attyjosh I think it's because she just debuted, and that era needed a new big voice singer like Mariah, Whitney, and Celine, so her record company marketed Xtina as such, by making her sing these pop power ballads with insane climaxes. But Xtina herself mentioned to Kelly Clarkson that she complicates her life by making her studio songs way too high and hard to sing live, though in recent years she has simplified that so much.

Christina really struggled with her F5, and some times even E5. She was very inconsistent with hitting those notes, even at her debut era, when her tessitura was higher. It obviously was from poor technique, as she needed to approach it with a more heady mix instead of that aggressive chesty mix. I also think her tendency to darken her tone by using a lowered larynx really screws up with belting those high notes.
oh for sure, she showed potential in her upper belting but made it unnecessarily difficult difficult for herself with the technique she used 🤦♂️ she had a high larynx in a lot of her upper belts which made the tone kinda whiny…not to dismiss her talent but if she’d worked closely with a vocal coach she’d be wiping the floor with everyone
i love it too, but definitely a lil too high 😭 not that she couldn’t do it but she cracked on 2 original key attempts and dodged a couple so it’s a shame she didn’t get proper training around this time
She did that a lot while on tour. It's understandable. She was promoting multiple albums at the same time, touring the world, and recording the Christmas album at the same time. I can't imagine that being easy on her voice. So dodging the high note was the right move.
There is a reason she is the voice of her generation, love her! I always wished she would hold the second part the say way she did in the studio version. Morissette Amon covers this song with whistle and its incredible, with that second long note held.
The four seasons hotel attempt in 99 her best one tbh. Her voice sounded super clean, not a lot of rasp and tension (for Xtina standards) for most of the climax. Even at the top note, it didn’t sound as tense as most of the other attempts here. If I wanna watch a live performance of this song, I watch that one bc her voice sounds the most pleasant there on the high belts. Plus, she restrained herself a little more here compared to later attempts and actually made it sound not overdone lol
The first two are great, she was able to replicate studio version except for sustained Eb5 This video also proved her voice back then was much fuller than now despite all the tension. She should stop using too much distortion
I actually like the lower key, the E5 sounds more comfortable for her. Her high belts were never really technically good but that run is super impressive
Well she was my Diva when I was a teen, 14 to be exact when the Reflection ( Mulan theme song) came out. I love her even more on her Debut Album. She won best new artist over Britney. And that was a debate with a Britney Stan classmate of mine. Haha 😂 My problem with her was the over singing and/ or dodging the notes. Now that I’m older I noticed her jaw tension, tongue tension. Maybe that’s why she can’t hit the money notes or sustain and missing the resonance. Then I discovered the vocal trinity. Well not really discovered but Whitney, Mariah & Celine were always in the background on the radio or karaoke on parties. I will always remember karaoke VHS containing hits from Whitney. I will always Love You, Run To You or Saving All my love. As for Mariah & Celine. Both music videos were always played on the television in the early morning at 6-9am before the program proper on that tv channel. Not a lot of local tv shows back then. They played Mariah’s Dreamlover, Hero, I’ll be there. And Celine’s When I call in love & Beauty and the beast. Ahh great time to be young & carefree again!! 😅😂

Poor Christina, she could have preserved her voice more if the label wasn't so interested in creating a new Whitney/Mariah hybrid.
I swear this note almost took her out every time she went for it even in the lower key she would nail it some time but most of time she was fighting for her life on that climax
It was too high for her, considering she didn’t have much vocal training (which is more credit to her in a way) But that meant it wasn’t sustainable to sing this climax like 30 times, then the same with her stripped era songs except she wouldn’t even attempt half the notes
Always been one of my favorite Xtina songs. I would LOVE to hear how it would sound / how she would approach the song nowadays. She could rework it in a similar way to how she did Reflection, which I loved.
Due to the lack of technique and necessary studies, it was difficult for her to reach these notes in the music, so much so that it came out squeezed and dull.
I’m gonna add she was YOUNGER and new to music. If you watch her recent performance of “I turn to you “ she hits the note just fine of course in all fairness the song is one step down lower key. So she definitely has improved that ….

obviously this channel is to hate on xtina.Well tbh the only slips of xtina is the bridge where she has to sing that "run" part, it is always a hit or mess but everything else sounds rich and on point. Well never xtina never sing the song again after her debut. She must have been embarassed of her mishaps of this song.
