Excerpt: RxJava is an incredibly powerful tool for making Android code easier to maintain and less bug prone, but as a new Android Developer, it might not always be clear what exactly RxJava is doing and why doing things that way helps make code better. In this talk we’ll discuss how things were traditionally done in Android, problematic areas with these approaches, and how RxJava can help solve some of these issues. In addition to providing the motivation for RxJava, this talk will also provide the audience with examples of the most common RxJava use cases as well as common pitfalls to avoid when integrating RxJava in a project for the first time. No prior Rx knowledge is assumed.
Bio: Christina is a cross platform mobile developer living and working in SF. In addition to trying to convince the world to use Kotlin on a daily basis, she also enjoys building beautiful UI’s, extolling the virtues of Rx, and reading well documented APIs.

The order of subscribeOn and observeOn in the examples is a bit strange but then it's probably understandable because it was 6 years ago and this is RxJava 1 we're talking about here. Great talk. It clearly demonstrates the whys which are missing from many other talks and articles. The hows are less important and one can find out themselves later on

When she says that subscribeOn is only used once: not true. Subscription happens upward from the "subscribe" command to the observable above till you reach the source. Each Observable subscribe to it's parent observable. And if you encounter 2 subscribeOn you switch thread twice while you do that. If you have something linear where the work happens only on the source only the last one really matter, but if you have more complicate chain that might not be the case.

Glad I saw this, wasn't even looking for it. I'm dealing with a spaghetti group of AsyncTasks calling different things. This looks like a good solution. Reminds me a bit of LINQ in C#.

I'm a Kotlin dev and I understand most of those slides but I can't imagine what pure Java devs are thinking when they see words like "val", "var" and "Unit"
