Mainz has a great Christmas Market, set up with the Dom as a back drop. The glühwein here is often from the local Rheingau vineyards and will be a higher quality compared to glühwein you might get at other markets. Wide variety of gift items and handmade items as well as a cool assortment of cooking/baking items. Only saw 2 carousels for kids, and it was really crowded on a Sunday.
Mainz is easy to get to from Frankfurt or Wiesbaden on the S-bahn. I like getting off at the Römisches Theater and stopping by St. Stephans to see the Chagall windows, before heading down to the market. Make sure you stop in the Mainzer Dom too, while you are there.
