This video is about Christmas Trapline "The Flip-up snare". I made a few toggles this summer when I was home in Newfoundland. I will post a video of that in a later video if I had success with this snare. This style of flip-up works great as a blind or trail set as well because of the wooden toggle trigger which actions the flip-up if moved in any direction.

Nice set. I am going to try a few for lynx so that I won't have to worry about them getting eaten by fox or other lynx. Really cool.

Trapping World I cut my toggles in Aug when I was home with dad, I will show that video later. You can leave the bark on the toggles if you cut them early enough so the dry good. The drier the toggle the more strength it has for staying in the notch.

Garrett Brader This is how www always made our rabbit sets and fox and lynx sets back on the island of Newfoundland. Had to, because once they brought in the shrews combined with the mice, any fur or rabbit on the ground were eaten.

sparky6889 yes this is a great set in areas where you want to keep your trail to checking your traps / snares hidden from trap thieves also helps reduce human scent around snares, and yes it can be checked from a distance for sure. Dad and grandfather always set the spring poles to protect fur and rabbits from prey. Sometimes I believe the old ways are still the best ways of doing things, after all, today I trap for hobby and to remain proficient in my heritage and up-bringing. The old guys did it to make a living and feed their families. If they chose this style of sets as the best/most preferred method, then I guess I should do the same... Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas.

Your right on about the old ways. I remember grandfather using the spring pole for his cubby/ blind trail sets and sometimes he would make a deadfall cubby for lynx and for the odd sly fox.if he didn't get them in the snares he would get in the cubby deadfall. !! I also trap for hobby and try to keep our heritage alive. I love to hunt/trap and fish just like our fathers and grandfathers did. love the old ways it brings back a lot of memories. Great stuff!!! Merry Christmas

When I make what I consider a traditional set I go right back to when I was young watching them do it. Keeps them what us even when they are gone. (Speaking about my grandfather). It is fun making the old sets, and like you said bringing back those memories.

NSTRAPPERHUNTER Every time I check it the snare is slipped by the damn grey jays. Just another reason I prefer blind set Vs pen sets. I've had good success with each but if I would have kept a record I know I have snared more animals on blind/trail sets over pen sets. But I also set more blind sets than pens so I don't know which has been my most successful set over the years.??? I know my double open end pens have worked better for me than the single open end. I think an experiment is called for here. If the weather is good over the next few weeks I'll try to put out 3 blind sets, 3 single open end pen sets and 3 double open end sets. And record the activity and successes of each.

What kind of wiring did you use? And where did you get your snare from? Where did you get your snare kit from? I’d like to get similar snare

Marc Germain Thanks, a little work to first make but very easy to maintain, far easier than a blind or trail set especially if you catch an animal as they don't damage the set-up. They get lifted to quickly. And if you set the same trails year after year you have your notches already cut for the different snow levels. Just move the toggle as needed up or down.

***** I have to open up the back of the pen and put another snare on it as I find pens sets not as effective for fox. But I'm glad I posted the video because I see that I for got to limb out the branches on the back side of the tree that the toggle is attached to. Can't have anything the toggle can snag into once the snare is triggered. I will make some blind snare flip-ups sets for fox in another video later this week. Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas.

rodney newbury you and me both haha... I will set up some blind/trail sets like this and they should produce. Made those toggles this summer at dads. I also made a few for rabbits that I will set so you can see how well they work.

Wallace Vivian thanks, I have to open the pen and set another snare at the back of it because I don't like snaring fox in pen sets, I'd much rather use a blind snare set and I will convert this set to a blind snare set the next time I go out. I have caught fox in pen sets before but find the trail/blind sets to be far more effective on fox. More to follow.
