Snares, where legal, give trappers a great tool to use in certain situations. With a little modification, you can improve a stock snare and increase your odds of success. In this video, we provide a little how-to on snare modification and setting. By simply making a curl, or pre-loading more of a circular curve into your snare, you'll cover more of the crossing and quicken the snare. It's a simple, yet effective modification that anyone can do. Setting a snare is an art. At first, it might take you some time, but through practice and trial/error you'll have it down. Using wire to form an anchor on a fence crossing and another 8-10 inch piece as a support wire will not only help a trapper firmly secure his snare, but also provide easy adjustment to provide perfect snare placement. Fence crossings offer excellent opportunities for trapping many types of predators. With a little help from this how-to snare video, you'll improve your sets and increase your success next trapping season.

I have never heard of the term "Pre-load" in conjunction with snares. I have been setting them on and off for 40 years, never with much success. Came across your video and thought I would try it. EVERY snare I tried it on had a catch the next day as opposed to having the snare dragged out of the way and no animal in it. THANK YOU!

I learned how to set up and place many traps and snares from Ragnar Benson/Larry Grupp's books. It's like anything else. Practice, practice, practice. It's damn frustrating at times. Snares seem to be making a comeback among people learning bushcraft and survival. One I have mastered is the Rock Weir trap for fish. Keep in mind that in a survival situation you will most likely expend more energy building and setting traps than you will get from the game. I've been experimenting for the last 30 years, especially with triggers. Great vid here, you got a sub

At 57yo, raised in a small city but big college university town, i can definitely appreciate this af my FIRST share trapping video to start my learning. I found more interest in snare trapping after watching my first episode of ALONE last night 5/21/2020 and seeing how this one woman named Woniya and her 3 squirrel takes around her 65th of 100 days. And she needed the food badly.. THANK YOU Sir for my first real instruction. Q1- who made and where can i obtain those type of snares ? I imagine after i try a fewn i'll be able to make my own down the road... the first thing that struck me the 84" length but as your video progressed, i understood. 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸 thanks again for concise, short and simple. Be well and stay blessed

A fox can actually go through a woven wire fence with those size openings quite easily and amazingly enough, some small coyotes can too. One thing that concerns me is having a snare fastened at that height and manner, especially on a fence that has barb wire, With that length, an animal, such as a coyote will often jump or climb the fence, resulting in a suspended animal dangling from the fence. While this certainly suffocates the animal through strangulation, it is NOT a good look for us as trappers and can be spotted, often from afar. Barb wire fencing, is of course, a way to damage the pelt, in fact, a fox caught can often do considerable damage to itself and it's pelt. My advice would be to use a cable slider, much the same style a beaver trapper does, which allows the animal to leave the catch site and stop some 20 feet away, saving the set location. A shorter snare can be used and still be effective. I may note that I personally NEVER attach a piece of cable which has a higher breaking strength with a piece of wire, that can break. Why would you do that , when a looped in, could have the cable ran back through itself and cinched tight ? Many state laws prevent fence snaring because the state does NOT allow entanglement within a certain footage from the anchor point. While snaring fence lines is an effective manner of capturing coyotes, there are certainly better ways of doing it !

No coyotes or foxs yet, but i did catch a deer. Such a small snare with the placement as such for predators is it common to accidentally catch and kill deer? Anyway to for sure keep the deer from getting caught up in the snare?

All my snares have break away j hooks. The loop breaks open at around 450# pressure ( I think that's the breaking test) releasing deer and livestock. The Snare Shop company can help with what you need to do.

If snares are set responsibly using swivels to incorporate twisting and are checked on a regular basis, they arent actually cruel. They act as a restraint as opposed to a hanging device. The trapper will then humanly dispatch the animal by shooting

A slow terrible painful death is wolves coming into your field at night and killing several baby calves while their mother's try and fight to save their baby's with no luck. Often times they kill just to kill, eat one calf and kill 4 or 5 others for sport. It is very sad.
