I just found out today at my eye exam that I have a Christmas Tree Cataract and I am only 33. I cannot find much about it just the same articles. Is it rare for individuals who do not have the muscle disease you mentioned to have Christmas tree cataracts?
I was diagnosed with L&R cataracts a few months ago at 54. My right eye bothers me the most. After a few of "my own tests" I googled Christmas Tree Cataract only because: A red stoplight at night looks like a red Christmas Tree, leaning slightly to the left with 12 to 13 red dots around it's perimeter. This is what I see from 1 or 2 blocks away (without my glasses and covering my left eye). Not sure if my eye doctor sees it as a Christmas Tree Cataract when looking at my eye but it's what I see (10 feet to 2 blocks away for different size LED lights). Oddly enough for that reason I googled "Christmas Tree Cataract with multiple lights" and found your video and other info. I was told my astigmatism is fairly low and likely not the cause of the multiple lights in a tree shape... (or the ship in the arcade game Asteroids) What's your guess? Thanks!
@@robnation2475 I'm glad you found my video😀. My first guess would be either the astigmatism, or even cataract itself causing the light symptoms.... not meaning necessarily that it is a Christmas tree cataract. But the cataract could potentially cause light distortion/glare like that.
Hi! Thanks for the question. Snowflake cataract is usually from Diabetes, and mostly forms on the outside edges of the lens, but can go more central. Christmas Tree Cataracts are mostly from people that have myotinic dystrophy.
I was diagnosed with cataracts 5 years ago, last week the eye doctor said they will have to do surgery soon. I’ve had to see him every 6 months and always get a stronger prescription. I think they are just about cooked!
I have bilateral congenital Christmas tree cataracts, I have known I had crystals in my lenes since my 20's, through a contact lenses fitting but only got a diagnosis in my late 40's, because of hospital referral as glaucoma runs in family. I have no other medical conditions. Just thought you might be interested
Just a little more then, I'm short sighted but in my late 40's I started to loose my near vision, I got quite concerned, my consultant explained my lenses will stiffen quicker because of the crystals, so told me to get some stronger reading glasses to work alongside my variously glasses for close work (I knit and sew). As you mentioned I do find contrast fun in low light, my night vision is poor but I sail and I have met people with far worse night vision! I drive, I do night drive but I am aware of my limitations, On the plus side I do not get sea sick, my brain is used to the world going in one direction and the dots and lines in my vision going the other way! Oh and I do not always see my cataracts, my brain ignores them most of the time, they appear in very bright light and when I'm tired. There is lots more, but the interesting one for you will be I have had to learn how to do optical field tests, as my brain ignores flashes of light on the periphery of my vision, as it is more ofter then not refracted light through a crystal, but in a field test you have to see them, it took a few tries but I now pass the field tests.
I had cataract surgery at the age of 45. I now believe that I am suffering from Posterior Capsule Opacification, often mistakenly called a “second cataract” I understand that it’s caused by the eye trying to grow back the lens, and simply requires laser surgery, which takes about 15 minutes.
I have been diagnosed with the Christmas Tree cataract (large on in right eye, small one starting in left). I had heard that there is a drop being developed that will be able to dissolve the crystalline formations. Is this true? Will it be available in the US soon? I have always had perfect vision so this is driving me nuts. I don't want to wear glasses but it is now interfering with my driving. So I am leery of getting surgery and having always wearing glasses.
Thanks for commenting John. The last I heard about a drop was about a naturally occurring steroid called lanosterol. It has shown some promise in rats. Still in the process of being researched however. If I had to guess, I bet we are still pretty far away from getting an FDA and proven drop that gets rid of a cataract. But... I could be wrong, research and medication can surprise you sometimes. I hope things go well for you!
@@DrEyeGuy Thank you for the reply. That was good information. What I had heard was just a rumor type of thing so good to know there is something but it may not be around soon enough for me. My left eye is now getting to the place that all my vision with or without glasses is blurring to the point I can hardly read out of it any more and driving at night has because quiet the Adventure and I'm only 51.
@@johnbaker2917 uggh! So young too! My guess if it's to that point, then they will probably start recommending surgery soon if they haven't already. Make sure you get a picture of it first though, so you have proof that you had a Christmas Tree in your eye. 😉
im 24 and i recently had cataract surgery on my right eye because of a rare disease i have called behcets, basically its a autoimmune disease so my body is attacking my eye and my vision actually got worse because i cant focus my eye anymore on distance or up close so im set to a certain distance in order to see well and now im due to have cataract surgery on my left eye. do you have any tips to improve my vision?
Hey sir i am really wanna your help 😭 i have cataract and i see a red purple yellow pink color in my vision.i seen these colors in my vision.why? What is that please tell me because i don't know about.
I get a visual disturbance in the shape of a Christmas Tree (both eyes, but slightly different triangular shapes). A light source like a stoplight at night 2 blocks away or a single LED 6 feet away in a dark room will multiply the light by 6-12 times and in the shape of a triangle with dots and lines/starbursts filling it in (not really halo-like though? not sure). I just had my first PanOptix multifocal done 8-14-23(right side) and that anomaly is gone from my right eye (traded for target-shaped halos). Just want to know if they sound like REAL Christmas tree cataracts or something else🤔 so I can forget about associating them with possible/future Myotonic Dystrophy. (just paranoid!?)
