What is a Posterior Vitreous Detachment? Eye floaters commonly develop as we age but sometimes you can have a large floater that we refer to as a posterior vitreous detachment (pvd). Posterior vitreous detachment symptoms may include eye floaters and flashes, blurred vision or even complete vision loss in the event of a retinal detachment. Lifestyle has a huge impact besides genetics on eye or any body part health. Eating all the good foods and herbs especially with fats, proteins, fiber, and the list goes on will affect this PVD issue along with other issues. Besides the surface of our body and eyes our insides need to be supported and detoxed on a regular basis. An overtaxed liver does not function well and does not allow us to digest and absorb well, by the time we notice, these symptoms have arisen and the damage was done. The key is to start off healthy and stay healthy. It's not too late to ever detox and support and heal the body, even the eyes and teeth, its all living tissue, it may get harder as we age but it still happens or we would be dead. Collagen is taken in also, it helps the gut so the body can get its nutrients and keep functioning better. So make chicken soup or bone broth or collagen supplements of good quality as well as all those beautiful fresh fruits and veggies. My life experience and research has shown me this over decades. I just discovered I now have them (in my 50s) and told my wife, and she’s like “yeah I have those, so does my best friend.” As someone who loves looking at the blue sky, I’m not overly happy about joining this club, but I guess that’s just one of the many “joys” of getting old.

Not nearly as bad as I imagined, nor what most people would. They give you just the right amount of anesthesia to put you out for a couple minutes, then they give you a nerve block.. after that you don't feel much.. just pressure. And you're in a state that you don't care anyway. Through the whole process.. in and out of consciousness, I remember mostly feeling curious. Recovery can be a trial if you're told to be face down for a time.. me it was 3 days. @@infinity_spirit

I agree.....there are soooooo many issues we can have with our eyes other than needing glasses! Ive been referred today by my optician to the eye hospital to see if i have a PVD and im nervous as i have health anxiety 😮😮. Best wishes to anyone suffering with any eye issues ❤... We need to look after them! 😮

Dr. Allen, thank you very much for all of the great information you share with all of us regarding eye care. As some of us get older, we tend to develop all sorts of ailments that gradually contribute to making life more troubling/disabling than simply just feeling annoyed. I already have an annual eye exam scheduled with my Opthamologist in 2 days. I will certainly ask him about my floaters and some of those other symptoms that you covered. I've had large floaters since I was in my mid-30's (now 72). Had them "blasted" by YAG laser by a doctor in Ft. Meyers, Florida. Since insurance didn't cover it, had to save up $1800 per eye. Totally worth it, as I couldn't read a book before the treatment. I've read more books since the treatment than in the previous 20 years. The floaters in each eye would sometimes merge and blot out a stop sign or traffic light while driving. It's now been over a decade since I got the second eye done, no regrets. I worked for a laser company in the 70's so I understood what they can or cannot do.

He forgot to tell us about the new problems that come with tempering with your eyes. Sometimes it’s better to stick with the problem you have. Too many lasik surgery patients wish they would’ve stuck with glasses.

I was diagnosed with PVD about six weeks ago and just had my follow up visit today. My floater looks just like a dead spider with its little legs bent. I have named my floating spider “Sammy” but since he is annoying, I frequently call him “ Sammy, the Little F#+@er”! Thanks for a well done and informative video.

Thanks Doc. Great informative video. I named half of mine “The Floaters” (70’s R&B group) who had a hit song “Float On” and the other half “The Drifters” (50’s doo woop and R&B group) and their hit song “Rockin and Driftin” and “ Under the boardwalk”. Just trying to have a little fun 😃 with a condition that for me is a nuisance at times but for others is much more serious. I have “neuro-adapted” to my floaters over the years and really don’t notice them till I notice them. You and your work are GREATLY appreciated. Folks my age did not have this technology to keep us informed. Keep doing what you do.

See a doctor, a real doctor licensed to treat your condition. See them more than once if you have continuing questions. Don't rely on random RU-vid videos. Try to use reputable websites like the Mayo Clinic for a medical description of this conditiopn.

@@donniemoder1466 His explanation is a bit misleading though. Floaters don't necessarily mean you have a PVD. It just means your vitreous is changing and there are forming some solid lipids in the vitreous. What he is referring to here is actually less common then normal floaters and occurs past mid-age, when the vitreous is shrinking, the bag that contains it comes loose from the back of the eye and when it pulls the strong connection around the optical nerve loose, that can give a more dense, less moving floater then the floaters that people are commonly familiar with; it's called a Weiss Ring. I'm an optometrist btw, so I know.

Just meet with my ophthalmologist today after experiencing lightning flashes and eye floaters continuously for the last three days. I was diagnosed with PVD. These symptoms really scared me. I already suffer with Open-Angle Glaucoma, Age-Related Nuclear Cataract, and high eye pressure. I'm 58 yrs. old. Still young. It was refreshing to hear you explain it like my doctor did. For everyone who has eye floaters and are currently in panic: keep on reading. I first encountered floaters when I was about 19 but somehow they moved out of my field of vision, then at 27 I suddenly had a bunch of them. At that time I also had bad anxiety, stress etc and I couldn’t stop looking for the floaters that it became a daily obsession. But: I overcame it. It WILL get better! Try to find the core of where the anxiety comes from, maybe with a little more help like therapy or someone you trust to talk to. Strangely, I still have floaters but I barely notice them because I’m not scared of them anymore. The mind can be a powerful ally or your biggest enemy. If I can do it, you can do it too!

@@SelinaUniverse omg thannk you!! I have floaters and after images too!! Which scare me so much because like, WHYY????? You know. I frequently fear that I’m gojng blind. It all started after my 1st flash of light across my vision a year ago. Neurologist said it was a migraine with aura.. but since, my eyes were more sensitive to light, I have floaters, and after images.. but I’ve been to a few eyes Drs and they say my eyes are fine. I do have anxiety so maybe I’m just hyper focusing on these things, liek you said. I decide recently.. well.. my quality of life is lower by worrying that I’ll go blind. So.. if I go blind, I go blind. There are blind people in the world. Lots of them. Who still enjoy their lives. So.. if that’s meant to happen, it will, and I’ll deal with it then. But for now…. Let it go. Still looking for ways to help lessen the floaters, which is why I clicked this video. Been trying castor oil per Barbara O’Neill RU-vid.. and I think it may be helping..

I didn’t panic because of them, I just couldn’t see well. I had 3 laser treatments and no good. I got vitrectomy with Dr Ross in Scottsdale, AZ. She and the whole team were awesome! Unlike the dr I saw for cataracts.

Great and Accurate information! From a Ophthalmologist point of view, I'm really glad you mentioned that vitrectomy surgery is a high risk procedure and rarely done for floaters. A couple of floaters are usually harmless. HOWEVER, If you get a large increase or influx in the amount of floaters, constant flashes of light or a dark curtain or veil coming over your vision you must seek medical advice! The prognosis for treating a retinal tear with laser is much better than a Vitrectomy surgery for a retinal detachment.

What a great video and explanation of how floaters are created. I am only 22 and have been seeing an increase in floaters 3 months ago and are still seeing them. Actually it’s more of a “bigger” worm looking floater which can bend in all ways and forms. In the beginning I was frightened but I went to see an eye specialist who said everything looked fine luckily. She didn’t schedule a new time for me though. I don’t have any flashes or “curtains” but only this rather “large” floater. Would you recommend me to go to an eye specialist again? I don’t understand whether it’s normal to see “big” floaters without it being a sign of something crucial? I really look forward to you answer🙏😊

Extremely informative video....I was fortunate having a PVD with Retinal Detachment, my optometrist, who identified it, had me scheduled with a surgeon the following morning. These rarer occurrences are considered 'medical emergencies'.

I first noticed eye floaters in my 20’s after I had a serious eye infection. I’d been dealing with blurry vision for months and when it cleared all I saw were floaters and it drove me nuts. I was beyond frustrated when I was told there was no way to get rid of them. I do find that after fasting for 24+ hours my vision is much clearer and I experience less floaters for a few days. Thank you for this video and information, and it’s something to be aware of for sure. Here’s to hoping I don’t experience large eye floaters.

I think this is a parasitic worm infestation. Would make sense that they appeared after your eye "infection". Doctors don't want us to know this as they don't want us to take control of our own health and get better without them. They themselves are parasites so they aren't going to rat on their cousins are they? 🙄

Supposedly, the more posterior in the eye. the floaters appear more obvious and bright lights also help with that.

Thank you for the clear and concise presentation. I'm going to the doctor now for a floater. He says that six weeks is the observation period. He also prescribed medication for dry eyes. I've been with that about three weeks. Sometimes it appears to be gone, then it will come back. It likes to get in the center of the eye. Truthfully, this floater is making me nervous. I need it to go.

I’m one who has eye floaters in both my eyes.It all started back in 2017 on graduation day.one just popped out of no where in my left eye and thought it was just dirt and nothing serious.A few weeks/days go by and it’s still there and gave me a worry.I went to a couple optometrists and all they told me was ‘it’s normal’.It honestly sucks and very annoying to have them.If I had heard about this before I would go back in time and really take care of myself more.One thing I will say to anyone who’s struggling with them is hang in there and be optimistic with them.a few years have passed by and I gotta say theyve got worse.Something that might help is don’t drink soda or anything with high caffeine.Sleep is very important as well.Your not alone and we’ll get thru them.✊

Look up MSM. How it helps soften collagen. Great for eyes, head potential to end eye floaters. Research a lot about it. Doctors are taught how to 'cure' with medicines. But only 10% - 15% of their curriculum is holistic health...

I am nearsighted and have low potassium and I often get eye floaters and dark spots. Lots of water, vitamin c, a, and d, and potassium helps a bit.

I just experienced the large floater! I have had floaters for a long time. What's happening now in my left eye is obstructing my vision and I almost lost my driver's license. My ophthalmologist recommends vitreous removal. Great video it explains everything!!!

Excellent, comprehensive, and easily understandable explanation of exactly what I have just been through, including the retinal tear within two weeks of initial symptoms (floaters, flashes, blurred vision). The tear was repaired with a laser procedure in office. Thanks for the clarification.

Good explanation on the cause and 'cure', I developed a floater this morning while teaching, tried rinsing my eye thinking I had something stuck on my cornea. Saw my eye doctor this afternoon and she tentatively said it was a PVD, will need to see a retinal specialist tomorrow.

I had a retinal detachment in 1999. It seemed to come on in a day. I was 46, and had been very nearsighted since I was 11. I had a sclera buckle, which increased the nearsightedness by 4 diopters. Had cataract surgery last year, with toric lenses. So far, so good.

I developed floaters overnight, after the birth of my last baby. My eye Dr at the time...scared me so bad that I was afraid to go to sleep. He said...if your retina detaches...you have an hr. I went into major depression and got down to 90 lbs. I went to a different Dr that said....you're fine! My current Dr says I'm ok. That Dr almost made me die from fear! That was 30 yrs ago btw!

You explain things so well. I have had pvd in both eyes. Then at follow up they found a horseshoe tear on the retina in my right eye and I had to have a laser procedure. I still have big annoying floaters and some light flashes seen only in the dark. Last week I had something strange and I always call my doctor when anything new happens. He believes it was an ocular migraine without the pain. It was blurry and I saw circular zigzag type stuff and it went away within a half hour. Thank you for explaining the pvd in understandable terms

This was a great video doc. I have a PVD I got it from an eye injury at 16 but I didnt get the bad floaters until about 23. My floaters are huge and bothersome. They made me give up all my outdoor hobbies, They ruined many of my holidays and they stopped me from joining the police force. They also are a consideration I take when trying to change my career as they are so hard to deal with. All this and not 1 doctor ever offered to help me. Ive had all the doctors tell me I will learn to live with them and they will magically go away. Im 36 now, My floaters are as bad and as bothersome as the day I got them. I wish somebody would have just operated on my right eye where most of them are. That way I would have been able to join the police or to have taken that job overseas on the beach that I was too scared to take, or not put on that 45kg of fat that I put on from depression eating and had to lose, now Im nearing 40 is it even worth it now? I will likely get instant cataract. If doctors had HELPED ME instead of treating me like I am an Ashhole then much of this pain in my life could have been avoided. Even tho I deal with them fairly ok now, I will never get back that ruined time.

@@rmarykirk1643 yeh mate . Well most opthamologists refuse to operate on floaters. There is maybe a small handful of surgeons in Australia who will do it and they aren't in Melbourne. I believe they are in Sydney At one point I went to Sydney which is about 400 miles away and I went to one of these doctors and they refused. After much begging and pleading they agreed to do the surgery. I should have booked the surgery right there and then however I flew home and a few days later I called to book the appointment in and they told me they had no record of me visiting the clinic. At that point I gave up. I should have seen the other 1 or 2 surgeons in Sydney who occasionally help floater sufferers but I put all my eggs in 1 basket

Your video is 10x more informative than my doctor visit today. Seemed like she had a plane to catch. What I haven't gotten any explanation on is the pressure I feel in, behind my left eye. Irritation too. Was sent home after dilation and told to return in 4-6 weeks. I'm afraid of it worsening and the lack of comments about the physical feeling of the eye during this worries me. Thanks for the video.

I've had smaller floaters my whole life and never really worried about them. But after a lens replacement surgery a few years ago ( a surgery that di NOT go as expected... they put in the wrong lens) I experienced that flash and then a few really large floaters. The doc checked me out and reassured me that nothing serious had happened. After a year or two they just sort of dissolved and went away.

I have a large floater at the moment. My treatment plan followed exactly as you outlined it. I’ve been back for the 4 week checkup and all is well. Floater is still there but I’m relieved my retina didn’t detach. You explained this so well, better than my Optometrist

Both my mom and dad had talked about having floaters, but I didn't fully understand. A few months ago I noticed having floaters for the first time, and it was terrifying. I was taking to shower and I happen to have a large window above the shower and it was super bright in the room. My bathroom is white and I noticed the floaters moving and had no clue what was going on or what I was seeing. I've sort of gotten used to it now and it's really only noticeable on white or light colored backgrounds for me. I have a high myopic prescription, a -8 in my right eye and -6 in the left. In the past my eye doctor has warned about retinal detachment.

My PVD condition stable and proceeded smoothly, meaning it's detached nicely and it should be completed by now. 18 months ago, started to experienced flashes in my eyes, doctor confirmed PVD, very lucky as no serious problem like retinal detachment. Things back to normal after a year, no flashes now.
