Christmas is usually a time of snow and cold, but not so in the Canary Islands. Thousands of people from northern Europe flee to these islands during Christmas. But what's it like to celebrate Christmas in the Canaries? That's what I decided to find out.

In this video I discuss everything from the great variety of Christmas food, drinks, and sweets you can find in the Canary Islands, to the traditions surrounding the holiday season.
The Canarian Christmas table is quite different from, for example, the Swedish one. Fish, stews, meat, and starters are mixed with almond candies, sweet potato trout (which surprisingly does not contain fish), and other kinds of sweets. I also discuss the wines and rums, and rum-based drinks that you can find in the Canaries.
But Christmas is more than food and drink. I also tell about Ranchos de Pascua, a tradition that dates back to the Franciscans of the 15th century, and the various folk dances that take place during Christmas. For example, the Tajaraste del Nino and the Baile de la Cunita.
And there's a lot more! Belen de Arena is a set of amazing sand sculptures on the Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and there are New Year's Eve traditions as well worth mentioning. And after New Years you also have Autos de Reyes, a celebration of the three wise men - the three kings. This ends with (even more) gift-giving, kids giving oats and milk to the camels, and people eating roscon cake, before the holiday season finally comes to an end.

Hi there! As a Spanish person that has celebrates Xmas every year in Madrid I can give you some insight into the menu that is usual for Xmas in Spain. It is very much true that it varies a lot between families & most families don't have a traditional dish that they serve every year. But a very typical menu would look something like this: Some starters to get the party going (these may include prawns in sauce, mussels & a plate filled with serrano ham, cheses, chorizo) usually the choice of drink for starters is beer or wine. Then you continue with the first plate, sometimes a fancy salad of maybe a soup of some specially made veggies. Here is were most families will switch to wine for the rest of the evening. Then the main course which can either be fish or meat (very popular are stuffed turkey or pig). Lastly you have the sweets, which are usually brought on a big plate with polvornes, turrones, mazapán, etc. Most families will have sweet liqueur or wine with those sweets such as Pedro Ximenez. Hope it helps and that you enjoyed your stay there :)

Hey, I recognize that place! Was there about 10 years ago during Christmas. Remember the sand sculptures and *everything* being completely closed on the 25th. Took a trip to Maspalomas. Weird "architecture" and street names down there. Big sand dunes and prickly cacti which one shouldn't touch unless carrying some tweezers.

Wow! Nice place to “chill out” for the holidays, particularly if your home town is sporting -8 degrees. You should come to Australia sometime for Christmas. Depending on where you are, temperatures usually sit anywhere from 80 degrees and up. In Mildura, northwest corner of Victoria, our temps sit around 95 but can reach 115 in the height of summer! As for the food, I’m with you regarding fish - no thank you. Great vlog Miro - thanks for sharing 😊

Oh I'd much prefer a winter down under! I was in Sydney once in...January I think, and it felt unreal seeing people surfing at Bondi while there was a snowstorm at home. And speaking of which, I didn't manage to escape the cold completely, because right now it's -12. The weather probably got annoyed at me for trying to escape, so it doubled back on us ^_^ Cheers, and thank you so much! :D

Excellent video, interesting way they celebrate Christmas in the Canary Islands , my wife would love it there as it seems they celebrate it for a month with different cultural traditions , and she, as the kids say Snorts Christmas . I’m not sure how I feel having 20c temperatures and Santa Clause swimming, but them again I Love the cold. Happy New Year, have a beer or three and stay safe till next time.

Haha 25 degrees, sun, and drunken Santas was a bit of a culture shock but it was really nice! Much better than the freezing weather we have in Sweden right now... But yeah it does seem like they enjoy their celebrations over there. Then again... I can't say that anyone would dislike having a month of festivities, right? :D

I look forward to the Canary Islands series. Was the trip entirely on Gran Canaria, or did you visit other islands? (Most videos I've seen from the Canary Islands have been from Teide National Park or Tenerife.)

I just went for Gran Canaria, even though I'm really curious about Tenerife in retrospect. Haha, I guess I might go there some other time when I'm cold during winter. So, at least you'll see some new places, like botanical gardens, the highest peak on Gran Canaria, some cool ravines and calderas, etc in the coming weeks :D

Happy New Year too Canary Vagabond. It was a good choice to spend your Christmas. It is the greatest escape from Nordic winter when considering the temperatures were breaking records this year. Somewhere in the North of Scandinavia have seen over -40 C. It is very chilly even thinking. I hope you have enjoyed your trip and holiday. I am wondering your next advantures for 2024. Have a great day. 🙋 PS I wish to have the secret recipe for that delicious krokets 😅.

Yeah it's "just" -12 in Stockholm but up north it's been colder than -40 this week! So it was amazing to be in 25 degrees instead for a while... Thank you for checking it out! And hmm... Well, the recipe is basically: - Caramelize 2 onions, finely chopped (on low heat) - Fry a packet of boiled ham, finely chopped - Chop two hard boiled eggs - Fry one chicken filet, salt and peppered, and then chop it up - Make a bechamel sauce, but with chicken stock and white pepper as well (no nutmeg) - Then mix it all together, cool the dough, do a double-breading of small balls of it, and then freeze the little breaded balls until you want to deep fry them
