Christmas is usually a time of snow and cold, but not so in the Canary Islands. Thousands of people from northern Europe flee to these islands during Christmas. But what's it like to celebrate Christmas in the Canaries? That's what I decided to find out.

In this video I discuss everything from the great variety of Christmas food, drinks, and sweets you can find in the Canary Islands, to the traditions surrounding the holiday season.
The Canarian Christmas table is quite different from, for example, the Swedish one. Fish, stews, meat, and starters are mixed with almond candies, sweet potato trout (which surprisingly does not contain fish), and other kinds of sweets. I also discuss the wines and rums, and rum-based drinks that you can find in the Canaries.
But Christmas is more than food and drink. I also tell about Ranchos de Pascua, a tradition that dates back to the Franciscans of the 15th century, and the various folk dances that take place during Christmas. For example, the Tajaraste del Nino and the Baile de la Cunita.
And there's a lot more! Belen de Arena is a set of amazing sand sculptures on the Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and there are New Year's Eve traditions as well worth mentioning. And after New Years you also have Autos de Reyes, a celebration of the three wise men - the three kings. This ends with (even more) gift-giving, kids giving oats and milk to the camels, and people eating roscon cake, before the holiday season finally comes to an end.
