OK, it took a while but he didn't need a stretcher as I remember. He has a dealership in the town I just moved from and asked him one day what he remembered. "Up until the first roll" is what I remember him saying.
Exactly, I agree. I still think a lot of Earnhardt's crash that made it fatal was the broken lap belt. But that shunt by Bodine was incredible. I was watching it live and told my wife I think just seen somebody die. Basically reduced to just the main cage left....
I know that driver injuries are unlikely these days, but I lost count that night of how many times I said in shock, "Oh, my God!" It was the 3rd-scariest wreck I'd ever seen at Daytona.
nathan waskiewicz Gotta look closely, the rear wheels never smoked till he got close to the turn. It wasn't much, but it was enough to get the wheels off the ground.
