Christopher Hitchens speaking at a panel discussion of the Claremont Institute in Washington D.C. 2006. The entire discussion can be watched here: www.c-span.org/video/?194349-... I fixed the audio a bit.
Hitch supported Bush's invasion of Iraq, See *The Grapple in the Apple* Hitch vs George Galloway debate. Funny that in this bit of theater Hitch is attacking Bush(43) for his rideable response to 911.
Christopher Hitchens will be remembered for centuries as one of the most rational, clear thinkers of this time ... a brave leader and fantastic human fighting for the rights of you and me. A credit to the human race, peace and progress.
@@tomasneel1980 Not sure what you mean by that. e=mc2, regardless of whether your an atheist or not, is always a valid equation. Physics does not require a God. But you probably knew that before you posted right?
yet he fell for the propoganda and bought the lie of iraq blowing up the towers when its been proven many times over usa did a controlled implosion on there own to get support for the invasion to get oil remember the claims of wmds that never ever ever been found not even one or a sliver of one! all a ploy to get oil and power! we all know this today if you don't you fall for propoganda plain and simple and if you fall for propoganda you buy whatever simon tells you. fyi the towers where designed to be hit with a bigger plne then actually hit it and still stand with 95 percent structure loss! read that again very carefull a bigger plane doing even more damage then was done and biggest tell is the videos all show a controlled implosion demolition not one bit of proof can claim a 737 hit the tower and because of it it falls bs open eyes ffs.
Mangesh Nanoti Yeah, I really don't get why we in the west aren't getting closer to India than we are. Surely an overt alliance would be welcomed by both, wouldn't it?
It's not because of the nukes, but because of terrorism & Afghanistan. Pakistan is the largest state sponsor of terrorism and holds up all the main supply routes to US & NATO forces in Afghanistan. Major reason why US or the West plays a balancing act. Now that US is withdrawing from Afghanistan, it has already made India a major defence partner and the relations are warming up. Also Pakistan is the original Islamic state and other Islamic Gulf countries will strongly back Pakistan in any conflict whereas India does not have strong allies except probably Russia.
RIP Hitchens. We need men like him more than ever. I still dearly miss the guy even though I never met him personally. He had so many grains of wisdom and would be destroying people left and right over the current sociopolitical/cultural climate we have out there today.
sums up islam "the trinity of self righteousness, self-hate and self- pity" . i think we are missing hitchens potent message here about islam and that for that reason i think we miss his input.
The fact that he is an unabashed socialist-leftist, makes his clear headed arguments that much more powerful. A great mind. A perfect example of how the power of words and thought transcends the span of the speaker or thinkers life span. RIP Mr Hitchens. You are missed. I wish we had a leader with his intellectual capacity today- and back then.
He was terrible, he had sex with his boys at college. He made it his life's work to attack Jesus. He is in a very bad place, I feel so sorry for him. www.northcoastcalvary.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Best-Evidence-Last-Days.pdf Take a look at this, we are at end times, repent and ask Jesus to save you and forgive your sins. I am a former fentanyl addict, Jesus saved me. In my life I have suffered terribly with sinful choices, and suffered so that to stop the pain I bashed my head. Please listen to me you dont want to die alone, you will be in eternal torment. I say this to scare you out of love of my fellow man, and you may find you actually love your life being a christian, you have to adhere to gods law as how you interpret them and its wise to get baptised and take communion and go to church but the main one is to ASK JESUS TO FORGIVE YOUR SINS , I hope to see you in paradise Halleluia " and now to the king, eternal, immortal, invisible, be all glory, for ever and ever, amen. (book of timonthy in the bible)
Although I am not an atheist, yet I admire Late Christopher Hitchen's frankness and boldness. After Robert Spencer, Hitchens was one of the most vociferous critic of Islam. Superb speech. Thanks for sympathizing with my country Bharat (India). We continue to suffer brutal acts of Islamic terrorism.
Robert Bruce Spencer, for the two who have asked, is an author who writes extensively about Islamic dogmas and how they translate in the modern world with terrorism, etc. He is, perhaps, worth looking up in the absence of Hitchens.
I think we have to give Rushdie credit for the exceptional situation he was in: there was a death sentence against him and millions of fanatics ready to carry it out, while the British government refused to protect him if he doesn't make this show. Rushdie never wanted to be a hero, but as far as I know has lived up to it from than on and has stepped back from those words. As to his talent as a writer I can only recommend to people to actually read his books.
@@TheDynamicJAB Thank you for your concern, I hope you are well too. Most of this channels content is from the time when Christopher Hitchens was still alive and since his death December 2011 I haven't really figured out what to do here. (This video is the complete version of something that I have uploaded more than ten (!) years ago.) But there is still a lot of interest, people watching and commenting those videos, so I just leave it be, just sometimes delete spam and comments by crackpots. The odds are heavily against finding new content that would be comparable to what is already here or elsewhere on youtube. By the way, if you or others want to discuss Hitchens, there is r/ChristopherHitchens on reddit which I regularly visit.
It was funded by it, not created by it you somber idiot. It was funded by it for the purpose of overthrowing communism, so stop acting like this has just been discovered.
I wish he was here today. He made sense out of the senseless. He knew everything and all of it. The man was a wonder and I hope that is of comfort to his wife and daughter.
A quick course in Political Science in the new millennium. The problem with Hitchen's arguments is that they can not be condensed or consumed in a :30 second ad, nor developed in a debate with ten intellectual lessers on the same stage.
+Steve Rapson But nor could those of Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Locke, Voltaire, Paine, Marx etc etc........He is in some lofty company in this regard, surely?
ts757arse Well, for the Facebook/Twitter generation, serious political and /or intellectual debate is a non-starter, sadly! 2 minute sound-bites are the only currency they can grasp, and that is why Charlatans like Trump can reel them in with such ease!! Tom Paine would be spinning in his grave to see what the USA has been reduced to, frankly!
Steve Rapson clearly we’re both here because we love Hitch, but you should watch some more of his clips. He certainly holds his own in short format as well as long debate.
I've recently been revisiting Hitchens' videos on this... Man, was I ever blind to the issue. I have only begun to wake up to these issues in the past two years or so. I am now working towards joining the military.
DH1986 Hello friend.Sometimes reading text can be a little vague to interpret. Could you clarify for me,whether your sentiments might be supportive of Cheney's company's action in regards to Iraq, or deploring of those actions, or perhaps another position in between those two sides. My intuition seems to have failed me today ! Thanks.
7 years on, and Hitchins' message remains as poignant as ever - who has assumed the mantle of plain speak, that Western society needs now, as much as ever before.
I just seen videos of him in his last days. So sad he is now gone did not realise until now although I'd remembered him in interviews from many times before
On a related note, I just reread "What I Don’t See at the Revolution" a short article by Hitchens in Vanity Fair about the Arab spring: "the author puts forth a wary prognosis for the brave Egyptians who thronged Tahrir Square: they likely haven’t got the resources to break the chains of tyranny."
To think of how the American establishment just treated "those Kurdish brothers in arms" after hearing Mr. Hitchens praise them is really sickening to the pit of the stomach...and the flippant manner in which it was done.
@@QueenofNonSequitur He likely wouldn't care for Trump whatsoever but I can absolutely guarantee you he wouldn't be siding with the ultra woke left either unless he stopped being intellectually constistant.
Noticed this was never responded to and the thread felt incomplete. “This is the sort of bloody nonsense up with which I will not put.” (or whichever variant you choose) - Winston Churchill "...up with which, I will not put." - Hitch (*RIP*)
I was 7 years old living in the UAE a relatively stable country when the cartoons where drawn and I remember the anger people expressed towards Denmark. I couldn't get my favorite cheese brand because it was Danish. :)
I am hopeful that you are well aware where the quote actually comes from (or perhaps I should instead say, on which quote this one is modeled (or giving tribute)), but one can never know (and often finds undesirable results for daring to preemptively guess) on these here intarwebs, but let me know if you don't. :o)
Oh what Hitchens would think of America's retreat in Syria and abandonment/betrayal of the Kurds, who he describes as our brothers and sisters in arms who we must remain in solidarity with forever. Sad.
Hitchens explains his views superbly and justifies the morality of going to war and confronting Islamic imperialism, it's just a shame he is let down by the reality that Bush and co did not go to war for the same reasons. To them, it really was about oil, money, tax dollars and ego. That is why we are losing it.
I'm not with Hitch in the Iraq issue, Invading Iraq was one of the worst mistakes in our history. This Jeanne is not going back to the bottle. It turns out Saddam was the smallest of our problems. We shouldn't have opened the Pandora's box.
"one of the worst" not the worst. Read again. You might disagree, maybe you think it was a good idea. Things are looking good in the Middle East now right.
I disagree. The situation in Iraq before Saddam was morally unbearable. We could foresee sectarian violence, we could foresee civil war, but we had it progressing well before we left. We left, and hello ISIL! That was the biggest mistake. The biggest mistake is that we left.
"The biggest mistake is that we left" What other choice would we have other than keeping a 100k troop level there indefinitely? Who would have paid for that? Surely, not the republicans as we all know how Republicans don't like taxing people.
@@ellystripes Exactly! Regardless of the altruistic motives at the beginning of a political career, it is impossible to stay true to those beliefs because of the lobby groups, diplomatic expediency, general economic complexities & geopolitical considerations etc. Hitch would have been made impotent by the demands of compromise & the constraints of democratic consensus.
I find myself thinking of one-offs like Hitchens, Einstein, Feynman, that we must surely have historic, epic intellects out there today, or maybe tomorrow, on whom we will one day look back when they are gone with as much sorrow, but should appreciate so much now, while they are still alive.
We are attacked every day by our New Paranoia, The Airports - The Malls - The Stadiums - everywhere we are on guard - looking over our shoulders for the enemy, I have seen the enemy and it is among us, it is the fundamentalists. There is a time to heal and a time to weep, a time to live and a time to let live, and a time to fight for your beliefs and rights before you can't find them.
Hitchens wrong at around 6:10, he says "both FBI & CIA were responsible for letting this happen" however, in Ali H Soufans book "The Black Banners" he states that the CIA rejected the FBIs evidence of the 9/11 attacks
I always get a laugh at the comments section of a Hitch video. Everyone starts writing in ways,"I've not seen related to any other orator or writer" Hitches Oxfordian Poetry We all become quite British for a while. It would be incredibly strange if we spoke like this all of the time. Well, I've taken up far too much of your valuable time, Good Night.
I'm quite certain it is deliberate. I've noticed that Hitchens always phrases it as a clash of civilisation or talks about the direct threat to civilisation posed by Islamic Fascists.
7 years on, and Hitchins' message is as poignant as ever. Who has assumed the mantle of plain speak and defender of the West we now need, as much as ever before.
Properly medieval things. Novels. I don't appreciate that term "medieval". Why not call beheadings revolutionary? Why not call anathema classic greek? I think it's a bad part of French revolutionism to call medieval a tone of problem.
The problem with the Iraq invasion and the overthrow of the Saddam regime is that it should’ve happened 10 years earlier, after he sought to annex a sovereign UN member state and commit the Anfal genocide
Can you imagine telling him that Donald Trump is the president of the United States at this time... He would shit himself laughing i would imagine or perhaps weep
Kevin Harkens. Cheering me down? I see what you did there, using the opposite of 'up' you presume the expression would thus have the opposite meaning. Well tonight when you go to bed and before you 'wake down' ponder on your ignorance - your rudeness was totally uncalled for and unnecessary. What on earth is someone like you doing here? You're in the wrong place - in all his battles Hitch was never less than a gentleman. You, Sir, are out of your depth in this company. Embarrassing.
One can call this an open-buffet defense of the Iraq War. Hitchens was also pithy and hard-charging, straight to the point. Here he seems to be huffing and puffing but blowing down down houses. What a dreary way to finish out a brilliant career.
