Joseph Smith (Christopher Lloyd) is a curmudgeonly 95-year-old who claims he served on the titular battleship at the time of the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. He desires to be interred there upon his death but has received no responses from the Navy. In a desperate attempt, he takes matters into his own hands by stealing the Purple Heart of a high-ranking officer. He plans to return it once he is guaranteed that his wishes will be carried out. However, he must first convince Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and the US Navy that he is indeed who he says he is, and that the stories he tells could only be recounted by a man who was there.
