"High Energy Live Painting Performance" Painter: Christopher Mathie (www.christophermathie.com) 12-string guitar and singer: Sam Weis (www.samweis.net) Held at Mavi Contemporary Art, Tacoma, WA
Beautiful painting. The red and black colors that he had on at the beginning were to basically prime the canvas. Also a lot of the beautiful colors would not have turned out the color that they did if it were painted on different colors. Like when you mix paint, different colors give different results. If he had primed his canvas in white, you would get totally different results.
Right before you finished in the studio is the piece I like the best it had much more movement and I'm not saying the one you finish in the studios not great I'm just saying I like the movement of the near finished one congrats lovely work
The papers you saw me holding in the beginning where photos I took in Laguna Beach, CA, of the rock formations in the ocean just off Heisler Park. I did refer to the photos a couple times throughout the performance for ideas about shape and color. But mostly I just painted and let it develop from my imagination.
Love your work Christopher, I have watched this many times. What type of brush are you using in this video? Is that perhaps a watercolor mop brush? I cannot figure this out... lol!
I love the "high energy!" I am wondering if you had a plan to begin with. Was the paper that you held in your hand some kind of guide for you to direct some of your early strokes? It was a beautiful performance by Sam; a perfect compliment to your amazing work.

Well done Christopher. I really like your technique. It's very freeing. Your sense of peace comes across with your work. At least it feels like that to me.
