Growing up I was in every art class available. Even in high school I took every art class available even getting into advanced art that you had to be selected to. After HS I even attended the now defunct Art Institute of Dallas for 2 years. All that to say I’ve learned more in just over an hour from you than every art class I’ve ever taken. Thank you. I can’t wait to watch all of your posts.

I was also a HUGE Bob Ross fan growing up and have painted many paintings that just didn’t look right. I’m absolutely sure it was due to the lack of explaining tones and properly mixing colors. He was and is still awesome, but your teachings will make me a better painter no doubt. Thank you sincerely.

The more often I happen upon these art tutorials the more I appreciate that I never went to any art school beyond HS. I have just always always loved the old masters and read about them and their techniques. I could just look at a Vermeer for hours. I AM happy that I happened upon yours today. Serendipity : )

I was in a normal school and our art teacher told us not to use black. We asked the question "why?" and the answer was not too bad, I think. He said, because it doesn`t exist in nature. But we also learned white and black are NO colours, so your explanation of black being a colour (you make a colour choice) is an eye-opener and very helpful.

Great video John. I went to NYAA early 2003. I remember your class. I was in Dan Thompson‘s class and Jon DeMartin. I studied Munsell but the teacher was a Albertz advocate. I went to school visual arts and that’s how I learned. I was so happy to hear you say that a color and value changes depending on the color next to it. No one ever explained why I shouldn’t use black and I don’t really use black only when I need it. Absolutely loved your video.

Thank you for sharing your talents. I’m now at a place where i feel comfortable calling myself an artist. I work in acrylics; mainly because oils have intimidated me. I didn’t realize you could correct your mistakes. I was delighted to hear i can correct my mistakes. I learned other things too. Like, it’s ok to expand my creativity and to embrace my amateur as a way to expand. I did learn about black and yellow make green; only by mixing, and not the reason why I would use it. I thoroughly enjoyed this video.

Excellent video! This artist is articulate, organized and has a dry wit, so I am appreciative to have this opportunity to be in his studio, so to speak. Thank you, Mr. Wellington, and thank you, Jerry’s, for hosting a true professional artist/teacher. I’ve heard about using black to make green mixes, but it’s better to see an actual demo of how it works, and how black works with other pigments. Cool. That Wellington green is gorgeous, with a great range. To keep painting fresh for me, I set up thought experiments, so I feel like I’m exploring or solving puzzles: “what if I try this? Oops, that worked differently than I expected…”. Technical term of Oops! may be repeated often, haha.

I have a teacher like that. However, I’m in a senior class where the others are happy with the teacher taking the brush and ‘fixing’ their work. Not me. I am there to learn. It’s disheartening.

@elisafinch1325 Teacher are there not to teach nothing? Just to supervise? Supervise what? Well I don’t agree - if “teacher” are no there to teach why it’s a school or university? If is only to supervise, well… Perhaps is more useful to connect some friends and start a free atelier where to work and teach one with others

I've been looking for color theory videos! So happy to have discovered your channel. Your value vs color comments are quite heartening given that I'm a bit color blind :).

Thank you for this video, I found it quite helpful and inspirational. I really love your Wellington green❤ It is beautiful in itself, and as you demonstrated, a very useful green that can be mixed to suit your needs. I look forward to receiving a tube from Jerry’s very soon.
