I know, writing again after this has been on for 12 years, but let me just say this Dr. Ferrand is really out of line many times, because he says it is not about improvements with what they can do, but of faith. Dr. Ferrand forgot "by my works I will show you my faith" and the people were never taught that "For God so LOVED the world that He gave His only begotten Son", and "Salvation is a gift of God and not by works lest any man should boast" James didn't say the works brought salvation, but that he was repeating what Jesus said "If any man asks you of your coat, give him your cloak also and if he asks you to walk a mile, walk two". And if the free gift of God is salvation by no other merit than God loves the whole world, then by giving the gift, there must needs be a receiver of the gift. These people were working for their salvation and showed in the way they refused to take charity but the Bible teaches that if you need bread, the man with bread should be willing to give charity, so they must receive the charity. Let thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. This Dr. Ferrand is as out of line as they are, and he is the one supposed to be giving to the people the body and blood of Christ because no man lives by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. And if the words of Christ are eternal, then it is an eternal command to give charity when needed and to take charity when needed. Even the wicked fathers give good things to their children, how much more then does God give us, freely? If God says of some people to give, then God expects of some people to take.
#moorek1967 - Very true. However, from the Hollywood POV, they want to make the characters and situations reflect--thus legitimizing--modern morés as much as possible. So they change up lots of stuff.
Not only does this TV series not clarify that Miss Alice was raped; but in the book-as you may remember-she was _spiritually seduced_ by a traveling Quaker minister, who was initially in a place of trust by her parents and their church congregation. It was suggested that he had several similar situations "in progress" (i.e., with different teenage Quaker girls); so that (instead of assault) he was more willing to bide his time with young Alice until he had the prime opportunity to take sexual advantage of her. 🥀😞
