I decided to have a play around with backscenes since I'm absolutely undecided on what to do with them. I had thought for a while that I'd like to play around with green screen / photographic backscenes and finally got around to it.

Firstly I love the camouflage Pacer!!! 😂 Secondly what an amazing idea. I totally agree with what you said about the ‘off the shelf’ back scenes I’m not a fan of my own back scenes for all the reasons you said. The green screen idea is a fantastic idea. Especially for video making, could give the illusion of a drawn out rail journey simply by changing the background each loop of the layout. Love some of the ideas you have I’d have never have considered that 👏👏👏

Ha, it did look pretty cool didn't it? I should suggest it to Hornby as a new livery. And yeah I thought that too - you could make the layout look a lot bigger than it actually is! With it being a loft I'm considering painting some of the rafters / joists, whatever they are, green too so that they disappear. Regards, Chris

Sounds like a good idea 👍. You should suggest the pacer to Hornby I’m sure they would price it at around £4000 and it would break after 5 minutes after you have waited until 2028 for it it to be produced……… did I just say that out loud!?! 🫣

Going to enjoy watching this later once I’ve ran the gauntlet of a 3 year olds birthday party 😬😬. I’m not massively happy with my back scenes so really interested to see what you are doing 👍

That has definitely got to be the way forward what a clever idea, I thought the part you filmed looked really good. Well done!

The problem with backscenes is the perspective. Any picture you look at must have a vanishing point. The higher up your viewpoint, then also the higher the vanishing point must be. The perspective of the model is from an airborne position, but the perspective of the backscene has to be the lineside. So it will always look wrong, If you have Train Simulator you are allowed to take a screen grab from that so as to create a backscene from the correct perspective. Regarding the Chroma Key, the background has to be brightly lit. I have found it easier to use a pieces of cloth that do not have the colour of the train. Green isn't a good colour to key to because green is used a lot on railway liveries! So, unfortunately is red. Thanks for uploading. This is my attempt at Chroma Key. I think the best background to use is a sky effect. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mVnYT_SyNp4.htmlsi=OuZHTnjcLI96XFuU

Hi Allen - really good, I'd never seen anybody doing this before I posted this video, I'm really encouraged by what you and others are doing with it, I'm definitely sticking with it now. Regards, Chris

I've played a bit with this sort of idea. My loft has walls painted a pale sky blue that fades down almost to white at the base, and in places it has pale rolling hills painted on. I've experimented with augmenting this with digital backgrounds - you can see the results here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mE-wK1EXg9U.html. I found that keying by luminosity rather than colour worked well - if your walls are very light, like a British cloudy sky, it's quite easy for the computer to separate the bright background from the darker trains. If you have some hills or something painted on down near baseboard level, it works even better because then the train is passing in front of real, painted background and the computer can just overlay a photographic background on the 'sky' bits which are above where anything's moving. It was less successful where the pale background came right down to track level - I had to rotoscope the moving trains out in places, but that was partly a lighting issue. I don't have any experience of the software you're using, but Da Vinci Resolve is also free and very powerful for this sort of thing. You could get rid of those problems with the shadows at the top of your boards in just a few clicks by drawing a box around them and setting it as a garbage matte. I really enjoy these videos, by the way. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the advice, and I really enjoyed the video - the misty viaduct! Was the shot after that taken in Prague? I'll check out that software, thank you! Regards, Chris

@@WirenwoodModelRailway Thanks! I think it was Prague, but honestly, it was just something I found on Google. Da Vinci Resolve has a lot to it and I'm only a beginner, but it's extremely powerful and there are a lot of tutorials on RU-vid.
