However, what is after the chrome as top coat/protection? Other colours we can use normal clear coat but not for chrome as it'll just kill the chrome colour, not wax or polymers either so is there anything at all to replace the clear coat? Water based clear coat?? Thanks..

Is it not amazing , No respirators !!! All you need is a polished piece of chrome some sort of black paint , water , some chemical that would wash away the black stuff , and a whole lot of time , `. It’s not a scam it’s actually a chemical process. It needs black gloss as base coat. Washed with deionized water Then an activator then washed again with deionized water then a combination of silver nitrate and an other solution at the same time which creates the silvering then washed again with deionized water and then some times a fixing agent and it can also be 2k cleared.
