I love the 5.7 Hemi. In 2005, I bought a Chrysler 300 C with the 5.7. One of the best trouble free cars I've ever had! I sold it last year with 247000 miles on it and it ran fine. I always maintained it and replaced the water pump one time and the alternator one time. Hoses and belts as needed and oil changes every 4000 miles . Point is, no Hemi tick and nothing internal on the engine ever failed. Maybe I'm just lucky but I am a fanatic about maintaining everything mechanical that I own and I can fix damn near anything right the first time.

I’m the guy that bought the LQ4 you recently had on the channel. Tore it completely down today. I got lucky. All main and rod bearings were the factory installed pieces and looked good. Crank just needs a good clean/polish. Bores are .0008 above service limit according to GM but, they look good and have no ridge. I finally got something I can work with. However, the outside of the block looks the absolute worse I have ever seen. Inside is what counts though!

If that little 5.7 could talk, I dont want to imagine the atrocities it would tell us about. It looks like someone in their backyard rebuilt it, or the classic "I know a guy that can do it cheaper"

The fact you have several of 5.7 engines, but dont sell parts for them... Kinda speaks well of this engine.

I love watching these teardowns. I've had 3 5.7L in Ram trucks. first one ran to 157,000 until I traded it, second one ran till 77,000 until I traded it and the current one has 23K. Never had a single problem out of any of them. Just Gas and Oil.

Every time I see those heat tabs on one of these engines I keep thinking the restraining bolt that they put on R2D2 in Star Wars.

Being a mechanic and knowing what happens to hemis when they over heat I was waiting for dropped valves/ valve seats

Yesss, engine carnage! I love it. This was an interesting one. It looks as though they did a hillbilly rebuild, but didn't bother with replacing any timing components---that's why it blew up. But even if it didn't blow up, it was running on borrowed time anyways. This engine was neglected, and with the main/rod bearings so worn, I'm sure oil pressure was pretty poor---a spun rod bearing was probably not too far away

You should see what one of those hemis looks like after a high rpm hyrolock! Someone submerged a Ram in a pond, cleared the cylinders by removing the spark plugs, but didnt realize there was still water in the bottom of the plenum. They drove out and then floored it, sucking the remaining water into the block and Presto!! ...... Twisted rods and holes in the block. It almost looked like a grenade went off in there.

You know you messed up bad when the most effective engine disassembly tool is a broom handle.

This looks like a "Bubba's Special" that was "rebuilt" to save someone some money and it grenaded about 100 yards from the shop because someone forgot to pull the pin out of the tensioner 🤣😂🤣😂

You have missed on the joy of doing a tear down of a motor that never saw detergent oil. That 5.7 is spotless compared to some I did in the 70s. Lol

Another engine that I would Love to see is a Ford 4.0 SOHC V6 although it’s probably very similar to this engine in the way that there won’t be money coming out of it.I love your videos either way.

2008 & earlier gen 3 hemis have the heat-activated removable valve seats in the heads. '09 & later addressed that issue and don't do that. I can hear all the clam dips in here crying about "hemis eat lifters and cams" when they should learn vehicle maintenance and change oil once in awhile. Great video, thanks! This 5.7 looks to be pre-Eagle with dropped valve seats.

I have a 5.7 in my ‘04 Ram 1500. 140K miles and it’s hanging in there. Better not drop a seat!

I have a 08 300C that I bought new with 135,000 problem-free miles on the clock, and it still pulls like a locomotive. The last time I had the engine scoped, the tech said it was the cleanest high mileage 5.7 he'd seen in years. Unfortunately, gross negligence and extreme abuse killed this engine.

This video makes me wonder how much time my truck has. 5.7 HEMI, almost 240000 miles and 7400 hours, and I haven’t had to do anything more than oil changes, spark plugs, one water pump, and I did the thermostat and belt just because I had it apart (also I didn’t use RTV, just gaskets/orings) one day I’m sure it will probably grenade, and if it does and the block is still good I’m buying a new rotating assembly and making it a stroker engine. 😁

Heat is the number one cause if that motors issue I’ve had my 06 300c with the 5.7 for the past 240,000 hard beaten miles still runs no issues number one thing I did have it tunes and lower thermostat went with the 175 had fans adjusted to come on at 190 so it never got hot I see guys all around me dropping valve around 150,000 miles here I am still running around until that guy ran a light and totaled mine now I’ll never know how long she would have ran for 🤦‍♂️ so I got a 2014 jeep summit with the hemi with only 50,000 miles just to start over lol

You should talk to the Discovery Channel. Maybe you could talk them into doing a show called "I wouldn't to this to anybody's car". A radiator hose for crankcase ventilation? Looks like this poor engine has had a long series of "I know someone who'll do that for a case of beer" mechanics. And it looks like they insisted on advanced payment. I'd laugh if it wasn't so sad. I love these engines. I had 3 5.7 Chargers, all with MDS deactivated via tuning and I meticulously maintained them and all took a beating and went the distance. The first one was a '06 and had a slight "hemi tick" from new but it never got worse. I'm tempted to buy another Charger but this time would go Hellcat or 392 minimum!

The next time I'm in St. Charles visiting my son, I will try to swing by your shop and say hi. Been watching for a while, really enjoy it :)

I've got one of these in a 2005 Durango and it has been a great motor. I'm OCD about oil changes and tend to take care of my stuff, and at 180k miles, it is still going strong. It does need a water pump though...

Whoa! That teardown was more like an autopsy. Can't help but think this was an old, sick and tired engine that decided to take on one last (and final) street race.

Got this engine in the 2010 300 I now drive, it has 133K miles on it, and it still purrs like a kitten when cruising the highway, and roars like a lion when I put my foot into it. Not so much as a drop of oil leaks anywhere.

Wow thanks for dumping the money into that crap core too make this video, we appreciate. I tell you, when you said you thought it was an "2008 - 300c" I immediately thought, "It probably ran hot and started dropping valve seats". That's what happens though, when you don't clearance your seats correctly from the factory. They get a bit hot or overheated, that little bit of metal expanding/contracting from the heat cycles, they just start to fall out. Chrysler knew they messed up and had a problem with those first gen 5.7L Hemi, especially the 2005-2008 years. I have personally seen at least 3 other 5.7s that have gone to the great scrapyard in the sky, from dropping valve seats. Most of those didn't even run hot, the seats at some point just decided "I'm out, peace". I have even seen a case or 2 of the 3.6 Penta engines doing the same crap. Between those 2 series of engines, Chrysler put a lot of lemons into circulation over a couple or three year period. I've even seen some reports online claiming failure rates as high as 5% per year, for certain early model years of those engines. 5 percent may not sound like much, but 5 percent of hundreds of thousands of installed engines, well Dodge really shat the bed on this one.

5:59 if you told me you pulled a smallblock HEMI out of a Chrysler 300 and showed me that pic, my first guess would be that the Chrysler 300 in question had fins for days and the Conelrad frequencies marked on its radio!

Very Cool seeing this teardown! My 300C with the 5.7 dropped a valve seat in similar fashion to this engine. I had only seen a borescope photo of the damaged piston, and never fully understood the level of carnage that took place inside my engine. Lacking the time, space, knowledge to change the engine myself I elected to go with a local garage and remanufactured engine with warranty for a tidy sum in the neighborhood of 7K. I absolutely loved my 300 and sadly had to trade it for a more fuel-efficient car less than one 1year later. The broken valve seat occurred in what I thought was a strange way. I hammered down on the throttle one morning on an open stretch of highway then let off and checked my rear view mirror only to see a long thick trail of white smoke behind me. Moments later the car stopped leaving the smoke trail and drove normally (no problems, warning light or smoke) for about 1 week. I took the car to meet a friend and stopped for gas on the way. After fueling, the engine cranked but wouldn't start and made an awful noise. So I had the car towed back to a local garage where they then discovered the broken seat. I still wonder why it ran normally for a week before giving up. I'd love to own another C but I'd get one with 6.1 engine instead.

Every time now that there's a sticky crankshaft, I want to hear a reference to the Ford 6.8 that got an assist from a sledgehammer.

Please do a 1uz. I somehow rod knocked mine and my buddy did also in our 400s drifting them. Would be a treat to see one taken down and lots of people could use it for reference like the sr20 videos

I rebuilt my Aspen 5.7 , was looking for the chewed up cam; to my surprise the darn thing looked brand new inside at 200k. Easiest motor to rebuild. Loved the video btw.

Looks like high quality shade-tree stuff going on here! That motor is ATE UP with the Peyroni's disease!

They are a good engine in terms if power and economy for said power. That being said, they are plagued with a design flaw due to the angle of the camshaft and lifters because of the height of the camshaft in the block. The lifters do not get sufficient oiling due to how the oil doesn't drain back into the lifter or get "splashed" with oil from the rods/crankshaft because the camshaft is contained within its own isolated area within the block. As a result, in engines that see alot of low rpm runtime (stop and go driving / jobsite idling) this results in lack of lubrication wear on the camshaft, and the roller on the ends of the lifters. Typically, the bearings in the lifter fails first due to lack of lubrication which seizes the roller, which then starts wearing the cam lobes. Seen so many of these while working at a Chrysler dealership that I already had the job pre quoted for time and parts for the various vehicles with these engines. Alot of times, they wouldn't even have a CEL on, but you could HEAR the "death tick" or even screeching from the metal/metal grinding of the cam and lifter. The repair is to replace the engine. Sure, you can replace the lifters and cam, but metal has gone through the entire engine and when this usually happens, other failures are imminent. Replacing the cam and lifters isn't a cheap repair either, so it's more cost efficient in the long term to replace the shortblock at least and know the internals are fresh. After that, it is HIGHLY recommended you use a friction additive like Lucas or a ZDDP additive to help protect the cam and lifters. Sorry this is long, but this is a design flaw thar really irks me that Chrysler hasn't come up with a solution for other then to hope this happens outside warranty and then make the customer pay 8 grand to replace the engine.

I’m a broke father of one little guy, and man do I want a project truck so bad. But life is probably moving me in the direction of a Subaru/Honda/Toyota for the MPG at this point. This video is sick. The 5.7 HEMI is my favorite engine of all time.

Cleaned up, and with a nice thick piece of glass on top of it the block would make a great petrol-heads coffee table (and they sell for serious money too!)

Looks like they never changed the oil and the timing chain finally gives up with all the pressure

The cam location doesn't get enough oil on those engines hence the came wears out quickly. The old 426 hemi never had cam oiling issues because it was lower in the block and was drenched in oil.

That piston looks like the one from my '06 300C, which was very well taken care of. Never even slightly overheated. Dropped a valve seat while only going 35 MPH. I like the hemi's torque and smoothness, but lost a lot of faith in Mopar after mine died at 80K miles. Got a replacement LKQ engine, which never had the oil pressure or power of the original engine, and had more of the 'hemi tick'. I think LKQ hires brain damaged spider monkeys for their rebuilds. Very unimpressed with their quality and recommend anyone needing a replacement engine for anything avoid them like Covid and get a crate engine instead.

I have 82,000 miles on my '05 Ram 1500. I take care of it. but I really dread the sword of damocles that is the valve seats.

I would like to add in the early (05-09) 5.7 hemi was a total mess with oil consumption, it changes from year to year but Dodge has said that some 5.7 hemis are "With in spec" burning a quart of oil per 1,000 miles (7qt oil capacity). My 2008 Ram 1500 burned about 2 quarts in 5,000 miles just daily driving it, when I did valve cover gaskets at 115k miles it looked very similar to that motors top end on the PCV side. That truck was my pride and joy treated with frequent oil changes of high quality oil. Don't get me wrong I love the 5.7 and it sounds absolutely beautiful but between the MDS/DOD bullshit where you could just randomly grenade your camshaft and rollers and the valve train problems they're riddled with it was a no brainer I sold mine. I'm sure they've ironed out those issues by now though.
