I caught up with my very good friend Gerard recently. We were recalling some of our old car stories and mentioned that we both had Chrysler by Chryslers at one stage. Both 360 V8s. So, whether you are a Mopar fan or not, join us for this 360 powered trip down memory lane. What do you think of the Chrysler by Chrysler? Please 👍Like, Comment, Share and Subscribe. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the story, my first ever car was a maroon CJ Chrysler by Chrysler (i think 1975) with white vinyl roof, aircond, brocaid cream interior, elec windows and elect drivers seat, 360 V8. I bought it from my brother in law's car yard in 1983 for $1800 when I was 17 years old. I added a 600 vac sec carby to replace the factory two barrel, dual exhaust and chrome 12 slot rims. (I was able to fit 265s on the front when most car could only get 245s on the front, the wheel arches were quite big) The steering was loose and horrible and front end all over the place but i loved the car. Unfortunately i was involved in a crash a year or so later (not my fault) and i ended up wrecking what was left of the csr. Thanks for the memories.

Hi Mark & Gerrard. That tape player is ULTRA expensive Mitsubishi Electric Stereo/Tape player. My dad's black '71 Chrysler by Chrysler 2 door coupe was crashed into outside home in Roseville, by a drunk woman in a bright blue Datsun 180B triple SSS Bluebird wrecking both the cars. Clearly a wreck, I grabbed the "flash" stereo out of the Chrysler & fitted it to my FC Holden, then in 1979 I fitted it to my long wheelbase 1974 series1 Jag XJ6. Guess what guys I still have that sound system, it's in my current 1967 Jaguar mk10/420G, watch Marks video of my Jag and it comes into view at 2.40 . as when I bought the Jag at the Shannon's auction in 2013 it had some ancient radio that did not work, so I fitted the Mitsy' Electric one that I had taken out of the big xj6 in 1989 when I sold it. So 50 years old and still works perfectly, I like its grey & white strobe light like an old school rolling barbers lighted sign they used to have years ago, just push a button and it self-tunes perfectly to next station, don't like the song being played, just tap it again. Gerrard re the tape player with no fast forward or rewind it perfectly winds the tapes so they never jam or wear out. On the bottom left is the fader adjust wheel, in the middle the tape eject, on bottom right the long-range button for the radio so you can pick up interstate radio stations clearly, impressive. Re the ultra-light steering when creating the CH Chrysler V8 & VH V8 Valiants, Mopar Australia decided to fit the same heavy duty steering box and pump that was on the '69, '70, '71 Aussie Dodge Pheonix's I guess because they had them in stock, they were a RHD heavy duty steering box , would save money not having to invent/create a new one , plus the C by C's in coupe or sedan form were way bigger and heavier than their VG predecessors.

@@CH6P23Hi it was supplied in triple black, (black enamel paint, black paisley pattern vinyl roof, black nylon brocade seats) and BLACK headlining, with white coach lines around the wheel arches and along the sides of the car, as that's the way dad ordered it, direct from Chrysler Sth Australia. He could of had/ordered the last of the RHD Dodge Pheonix's for 1971, which to "grow" an extra year and make it look a little different Chrysler Aust' had done a "mash" up of a Canadian and US 1970 version with different lights, wheel covers and some chrome work, however this big car did not appeal to him and he chose the smaller premium 2 door Aussie Valiant based car. My dad a senior US diplomat, and it was to be his official US Government car, his "company" car to use, all the senior official's cars were in black enamel, support cars and pool cars were in dark navy blue, the mail cars were in a pale fawn/beige color. So, it was registered to "chief" of the USA State & Commerce Dept Sydney, Underwood House 37, Pitt Street, Sydney city, the old US consulate building before it moved to Park St in the twin towers in July 1979 between Elizabeth St and Castlereagh St's. It was sent from Sth Aust Chrysler in black, NO REPAINT. I'm now 67 yrs old and was in late high school when he received it as his new work car. Sports in summer was Tuesday afternoon at the council baths at Balmoral Beach in Mosman and we finished school for the day 45 minutes early at 2.30. I walked from one end of Raglan st to the other up & over the hill and down to Musgrave st wharf, got the ferry into the city, met dad at the office and one of his guys drove us to Kinsella & Nicholson at Sth Dowling st and ANZAC Pde intersection, where the 1967 Dodge Pheonix, also in triple black had been dropped off in the morning , the number plates swapped and car registration updated, the new car prepped and readied for use. It had the old-style navy blue & white NSW consular/diplomatic plates, C de C - 263, the two C's & 263 were in white paint on a navy-blue background & between the 2 C's there was a small white shield, the de was in navy blue in the shield. 50 odd years ago it was a pretty snazzy looking car, however it was always a pig to start when it was cold, or wet, AND if it was wet and cold, forget it, the darned thing would flatten its battery before it would start. It would need to be jumper lead started by my mums new 1971 giant Jaguar mk10/420G. It was like the weirdo sounding Chrysler starter motor just didn't have enough guts to get the job done.

Chrysler by Chrysler, stupid bloody name but a great car. In the 80's I bought a VK Regal that was optioned right up and had the 360. The torque and acceleration of that car is still vivid in my mind. Stupidly I trade it on a ZH Fairlane with a 302, it was a slug compared to the Valiant and I missed the power of the 360 and smooth Torqueflite. Nice story and Gerard's car looks very nice. One question though, the transition from a big powerful Chrysler to a Peugeot must have been a rough one😆
@markbehr88
@markbehr88 6 месяцев назад
Yes. The name was strange although I am certainly used to it these days. The 360 equivalent for the ZH would be the 351 as you know. Still the 360 would be quicker and torquier. The Ford more refined in its body construction. Massive difference between the Chrysler and the Peugeot. The Peugeot was very comfortable ride and interior wise, had much better steering and was quieter, however, power and reliability were all in Chrysler’s favour. 👍

Goodday Mark, Great story, my Chrysler by Chrysler story are also a great yarn I have owned 2 x C by C Hardtops each with a 360. Both that shitty maroon chocolate colour. The second one I scored off the original owner who happened to be a doctor but took me 15 years of persistence yearly phone call before he gave in. Unfortunately I wasn't in the position to keep it & had to flip it almost immediately then I sold it for the new owner a year later without him doing a thing to it & made $15,000 extra during the muscle car craze in the 2005 & 2006 era. I can tell you about another C by C hardtop in a shed in country Victoria since 1983. Extremely rare dual mirrors, electric seats, landau vinyl roof lines, 360, & all NOS parts to repair it. The old guy will not sell & his grandson wants to do a Dukes of Hazzard tribute. This car was really tough. There was some sort of office error and many of them were fitted with 340's. They were mostly found in Adelaide and Perth. Never been able to prove it apart from my father who worked at Tonsley Park who told me the story.
@markbehr88
@markbehr88 3 месяца назад
Never heard that one before. The engines would have had an E code and different for both so not sure how that could get mixed up as it is central to producing the cars. I know this because I rang NSW Distribution for Mitsubishi and that was basically the Chrysler code system updated for Magnas etc. Unless they had 340’s laying around and knowingly changed them but that is high risk for dealer and customer rejection as the first service would uncover it. 👍
@royferntorp
@royferntorp 3 месяца назад
@@markbehr88 There was some customer rejection. Especially at dealers in Perth. Customers thought they were 'robbed' with 20 ci. No one realised the 340 was a better engine as opposed to the truck engine. International Harvester trucks had the 318 and 360 truck variants. and the factory had problems keeping up. Tonsley had no choice but to get whatever Chrysler could send. Enter the famous 245 and 265. The upright Mopar motors were around after the VG. Would love to see a story on the Pacer.

My parents never had any 70's Mopar's, but they did by a brand new VC Valiant wagon in 1966. Dad felt Chrysler offered the best six cylinder engines of the period......well ahead of Holden. They only kept it until 1970 when they traded it on an Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina sedan.......a silly choice for country roads in Australia! Why did he sell the VC prematurely when he wasn't even a car enthusiast? No bloody idea. Even he's forgotten why. The Alfa was a great car in the right environment, with many features that Aussie cars wouldn't pick up until year's later, but where we lived, it was troublesome, and we only squeezed five years out of it. The VC would have been a great car for me to inherit years later.........had my wonderful father kept it!

Hi fella's thanks for the video recalling your experiences with Chrysler by Chryslers and to all the comments as well I always enjoy hearing people's stories about cars from the past. My experience with Chrysler by Chrysler was that back in the early 90's my cousin had one as well as a VF VIP as paddock bashers on his property, even then I wasn't all that thrilled to see what were once top of the line luxury cars being treated in such a manner (and would be regarded as an outright sacrilege today) but at that time Chrysler Australia were long gone & Mitsubishi were in and anything to do with a Chrysler / Valiant were deemed by the masses as "uncool" were unloved and not considered of any value, especially well used 20+ year old examples which both of these were. While the Chrysler by Chrysler was a junky rust bucket I do recall the VIP as being fairly sound and could have been put back on the road with a mechanical overhaul and some minor rust repairs but alas the time and expense to do so was deemed more than the car was worth at the time so that never happened, would be a different story today.

C'mon! Gotta be one of the silliest names ever for a good car! "Chevrolet SS" level. Chrysler US did have their "TC by Maserati" or whatever, it seems a systemic problem. The "Carla Zampatti Laser" sounds sensible by comparison. Cheers!

I got used to it. What about the Nissan Cedric or the Vanguard Spacemaster?

I was going to ask you to talk about the C by C. 😊 Do you think it is a grandparent to the later 300C ?

Is it the Chrysler by Chrysler that big Malcolm Fraser rode in? And Chrysler Australia strectched one by adding 6" to the length of the back door and all associated bits to fit him into it. Was the power steer better or worse than an XF Falcon? I've driven dodgem cars with more steering feel! 😂

Normally the PMs had Ford LTDs following the end of the Ford Galaxie in 1973. Whitlam famously got an S Class Mercedes (great for local workers). That lengthened Chrysler does ring a bell re Big Mal although normally he would have been in a P6 LTD. I reckon the Chrysler power steering was much lighter than even the XF. I had a 5 speed XF S pack with power steering for comparison. 👍

I know what you mean about that power steering, what were Chrysler thinking about? I took a VG VIP for a test drive once ,and when going around a gentle curve I very nearly crashed that beautiful car into the gutter , same thing nearly happened years later when I was driving a friends 1970 Coronet .I dont see a lot of need for power steering ,my 245 VH sedan is perfectly manageable without it ,and I suppose it could be argued that it might be more needed with a 360, but bear in mind that a slant 6 is only slightly lighter than a small block v8.

That’s right Barry. They should have added a little more weight to the steering. You do get used to it though. 👍

Ok a bit more than slightly. 🙂 I thought the 360 would be about the same weight as a 318 ,I thought wrong .
