First, hats off to DavidJ for a fine video. Second, I would like to buy a "virtual beer" for all of those who were able to remove/replace this without removing the alternator. I removed the three alt bolts and pushed it out of the way, and was able to complete the job. Total time: 1.25 hours.
@discorobotz
@discorobotz 6 лет назад
I was able to get the sensor pigtail disconnected without removing the alternator by carefully sliding a small screwdriver under the plastic clip, pressing up and gently pulling on the wires. Saved me hours of work removing the alternator.

I've done this twice on two cars and have found that a strategically placed screwdriver to break the electrical portion off the sensor makes removal easy. (No matter what position that red locking clip is in.) The sensor is then easy to remove and replace without having to take off the alternator. I can change the part in less than 15 Min., although I hope not to have to.
@DavidJWarEagle
@DavidJWarEagle 6 лет назад
I wish we had a good video of that technique. Another thing I was concerned about was not being able to start the new sensor by hand and ending up with a cross threaded sensor and a big oil leak. I guess that’s one reason the sensor base is made of brass.
@heyitsdavey

It is pipe thread so it starts relatively easy. Good Video. It is not the easiest to get to in the cars.

Helpful video. One question I did not see addressed. Since this is the oil pressure sensor, did you drain the oil before removing the sensor?

Was there any issue with the connector staying on the new sensor since you "broke it off" the old one?

Really appreciate your step by step install video and Yes. I had to remove or at least disconnect my alternator as well. Some do some don’t. All depends on how that plug is originally oriented. Took about 4 hours with a quick run to the parts store to grab an extension for the New Sensor. Finally done. And best part. No MORE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT!!!!! Thanks Again 🙌🏾😁🙌🏾😁🙌🏾😁

Thanks Brother, super helpful and detailed video. 2014 Chrysler 300S... Tried dislodging the "Devil Clip" without removing the alternator, no bueno/ waste of time. Ended up loosing all three bolts from the alternator, left one of the bottom bolts still attached and just tilting the alternator gave plenty of room. The alternator bolt where David used the combo 4X4&Jack to loosen it. You can actually put your wrench on the bolt and then pull from above with plenty of room and leverage (took me awhile to figure that out).

There is a trick to this. Im not recommending it but if you're a big guy like me who cant move around or a young person without jack stands or maybe its just too hot or cold outside, heres what you do. Or maybe you just dont want to remove those long bolts of the alternator. You can do this is 20 minutes. Take the lid for the air box off, you dont even need to dc the sensor, just the hose on the top of the filter box. let all that rest atop the engine cover. Get a 3/4 wratchet to pull back the belt tensioner, seperate the belt off the alternator pully. Now you want to get an idea of that sensor, Put your index finger on top of that sensor and feel for that red sliding clip. There is a empty space below that sliding clip between it and the sensor itself, similar to the ecm connector to top left. Now, Its a tight fit, you need skinny long fingers, not sausage hands to feet around. Once you figure out where that space is, Slide the screw driver in that empty space and push down gently and break that top red sliding clip off. Dont worry, it'll still literally clip back into place back in and hold tightly , it just wont have that the sliding clip on the top anymore. If you want to try and screw with that clip you'll be there all day. Once you do this gently work that sensor around. These things get hot overtime but eventually you'll feel a slight amount of play and it should release just fine if pull straight out. Dont pull on the wires to get this thing out, pull on the plastic connector itself. Alright so after that, like he said, oily wires, connector, clean that off. When you put it back in, its a pain in the ass. Again, put your index finger where your sensor should go, get a feel and attach a swivel/ short extension to the end of your long socket to give you more grip, baby it in. You only want this thing gently snug. Snap the connector back on, start it up, might have to drive in for a min to get normal pressure readings. If you by chance happen to buy a cheap ebay or amazon sensor like i did and your realize there is no way your socket can fit it like the oem one does, put a 22mm 12 point around the male sensor connector, then swivel/ short extension. Once you get it in, turn and baby it in slowly then tighten until nicely snug. Clip the connector back in and wah lah. And there you have it, no alternator removal.

It can be done without taking out the alternator or removing the bolts....I know because I just finished replacing mine. But it will take a lot of patience and time...and a little luck. The hardest part of the job is getting the connector off of the sensor because it has a clip that must be slid to the side before you can depress the tab and pull it off. I admit it took me over an hour using a small screw driver and some mirrors to undo the clip, but getting at the alternator bolts is a PITA too so I guess six of one and I choose working on getting the clip moved. Once you do that and baring you have the right size socket with the correct depth barrel, it's easy peasy after that.

Thank you so much for this. The jack and block trick saved me a lot of time. On the connector, i had to push the red tab down away from the engine. I guess it depends on who installed it. But for reference for others the connector is just like that one on the EGR in the example, so picture that upside down and move it appropriately. I had better luck getting moving the tab from underneath the car.

Tom Magdaleno You are welcome and I'm glad you found it helpful. It seems like the sensor can be turned in any direction and still be tight enough to seal due to the NPT threads. I tried to match the number of threads showing from the old sensor. Thank you for watching!
@doombeast45
@doombeast45 6 лет назад
I did it the easier way by just removing the air intake and belt, getting a feel for where the clip was and removing it. At first I couldn’t feel the red clip, and after a while I decided to just pull on the clip and it slipped right off. The red clip was broken off. I assume it was broken due to the fact that it is a rebuilt engine. But anyways I’m just happy to have replaced the sensor because after a few months of having the check engine light on, my car was beginning to shut itself off randomly and I assume it was due to the bad sensor.

trisha valle The oil pressure sensor threads into the front of the block as shown in the video. The oil temperature sensor threads into the side, above the oil filter. It looked to me like the oil temperature sensor could be removed fairly easily, if memory serves me. It has been a while since I’ve looked but I do think that the oil pressure sensor is higher than the oil temperature sensor.

Does this cause low oil pressure at idle or could low pressure be triggering a faulty switch code
@DavidJWarEagle
@DavidJWarEagle 4 года назад
This is only an oil pressure sensor so it doesn’t cause low oil pressure itself, unless it has a massive leak which you would see. A good mechanical gauge for testing/checking the oil pressure would probably be best if you suspect there is a problem with the engine itself.

i haven’t had this problem with the sensor. I recommend getting the sensor from your local dealer or one of the dealers who sell online to be sure you’re getting an actual OEM part. I think there should be a warranty on the OEM part but I don’t know for sure. I think the sensor next to the filter is the one on your Jeep GC. It looks like yours is easier than the Hemi cars. I found this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0o8ng5k-KVI.html Just make sure to get an OEM Mopar sensor from a dealer. Those aftermarket ones are junk from what I understand.

@DavidJWarEagle do you know if 6.1l srt8 is located in same area?
@DavidJWarEagle
@DavidJWarEagle 4 года назад
Yes, it should be in the same spot on the 6.1. You can either use a mirror or record a video with your cell phone to look in that area.

@@DavidJWarEagle ok mine doesn't have enough red tab on either side to push, pull, or grasp like yours, I just dont understand.
@mikeprice8307
@mikeprice8307 4 года назад
@@DavidJWarEagle ok, yesterday I put mine in. For the 6.1L, its location is the same spot. You do have to unbolt alternator to remove the sensor. To release the red lock tab successfully quicker ,a crescent needs to be used to turn the sensor until you see the red tab.

jack T This is a 2005 Magnum. As far as I know the sensor is the same for all the 5.7 Hemi engines. You might be able to check with a dealer to verify. Usually they ask for the last 8 digits of the VIN when quoting parts. Thanks for watching and commenting!

DavidJWarEagle if the engine has a light knock to it is it the sensor still or no
@DavidJWarEagle
@DavidJWarEagle 5 лет назад
No, not the sensor. The sensor allows the computer to monitor the oil pressure inside the engine. If you’re hearing a knock then it sounds like you have a mechanical problem with the engine.

bee Lover Did that fix it??. I have a 06 Dodge Charger and while I'm driving in a matter of seconds my rpms drop and my check engine and oil light comes on then it goes back to normal or it dies. The only way to get it to start when it dies is to add oil to it even though it doesn't need it.

Danny Leon This is a 2005 Magnum. I think this part is the same for all the Hemi engines but check with your local Ram dealer to be sure. They can verify by the VIN. You could also check on Parts.com to see if the part number will show there for your truck.
