It was one of those sessions where it all came together: a last minute freedom pass for the evening, great conditions, the perfect swim and so many fish!
I caught chub after chub, a dustbin lid bream and a trout - all in the space of a few hours ;)

Hi Jake, A big Thank you!! Fished Swineford loads with no success and then stumbled upon your video. Yesterday morning, armed with luncheon meat I sat in the same swim as the video and had the same success as yourself , including a new PB Chub of over 4lb! Thank you again. Now to watch and learn from your Pike videos!

hey julian, that is great news! congratulations on your pb chub, there are some real monsters in the avon and that swim does produce some fine specimen fish. i'm incredibly envious actually as my uk fishing is on hold now due to moving to auatralia. the fishing here is great but i miss the avon loads, it's been very kind to me over the years 😁 hope you enjoy the pike videos, there are some amazing english crocodiles in the river!

@@jakewilliamson Hi Jake, I was going to ask for some Pike tuition as well :) Good luck in Australia - have you taken your video equipment? Be great to see some of the aussie fishing :)

@@juliancassell1157 thanks mate! yup, all the camera gear is in aus and i'm hunting down some spots to fish. two things that are taking getting used to: aussies only really fish to eat what they catch and their setups are all left handed! i picked up a rod with a baitcaster reel on gumtree and it's all the wrong way round... the sea fishing here is amazing though! watch this space, i've a couple of pike fishing videos to finish off that were shot in the uk and then it'll be aussie fishing all the way ;)

some nice chub there! That bream was pretty decent. I had heard a rumour of sweetcorn being an excellent bait for trout

hi mark, the river avon is indeed a cracking river! i've had such a great season on it this year, chub fishing over the summer and piking over the winter. looking back on it, i've not done a lot on the lakes which has been a refreshing change ;) thanks for the comment, the feedback is really appreciated.

I think it's fair to say you've found a golden spot. All you need now is a good pike 😉

thanks mate! it's a winner of a swim and funny you should mention pike: my dad fished the spot on our last session out and got a pike! we've another trip planned for tomorrow night and i've half a mind to have a deadbait rig out on the 2nd rod as i've some mackerel in the freezer... i'll let ya know if we get lucky! thanks for the comment, really appreciate it ;)

Hi Jake, what an excellent video. Im thinking of giving the rod and reel ago instead of using my pole. can you give me some advice/details has to what set up on float for using luncheon meat. Thanks/subscribed :-)
@jakewilliamson

thanks lee ;) think the stars aligned for the session, it was spot on! def worth a go with the rod and float on the river, trotting is a bit of a lost art in this day and age of bolt rigs, bait alarms and 'chuck it and hope' rigs. set up wise i've been using a 13ft rod, nice and light, perfect for chucking a float. that's been fished with 6lb line through to a size 12 hook-to-nylon hook link. i've been using a stick float with either 3aa or 5bb depending on how far i need to cast and the pace of the flow. i usually bulk most of the shot around the float to lock it in place and then have a string of spaced smaller dropper shots running down to the hook which means the bait'll flutter through the water rather than sinking like a stone! depths can really vary on the avon, so it's worth starting at 5ft and then adjusting the depth till you start dragging bottom or getting bites. in terms of hooking the luncheon meat i've found that pulling the hook through the bait and leaving the point exposed works best. i've tried hair rigging and apart from it generally coming off on the cast, the chub seem to 'pluck' at it until it comes off meaning you loose them on the strike. i've been catapulting 3 or so cubes in to follow the float maybe every 4 or so trots through and a handful of mashed bread also works to get them feeding. if you're quiet on the bank, it's well worth trickling feed into the margin at your feet too. i've lost count of the times i've dropped the float in the edge to sort something out and it's disappeared! the float has worked really well in the past but i did try something new a couple of nights ago. i'd fished two rods, one float and the 2nd on the feeder. the feeder rod was the only line getting any attention but i kept missing bites as i was concentrating on the float. as the float was getting any action, i cut it off, tied a size 10 to the line, pinched two aa shot about a foot up from the hook and 'rolled' a big chuck of luncheon meat through the swim... fish 1st cast! it was great, i had my finger on the line and could feel the meat roll and trundle through the swim. a couple of plucks, strike and fish on ;) the avon has been really good to me this season and it's well worth a go. i'm almost looking forward to winter as the pike in there are fantastic. but i think i'll be on the hunt for winter chub too... best of luck with it!

OMG!! Thanks for the very detailed quick reply. I fished the very same spot in Swineford last year with the pole. my main problem was getting the bait past all the dace and bleak swimming around on the top. also fished the spot further down in the next field through the gate, the one between the trees. I've done better there, but when the water is too clear, the pike are an absolute menace. every other roach had a pike on it. I've been down the stretch at Saltford, the water going down to the boatyard. seen some monster pike along there attacking my keepnet. might be a good bet to fish there for your pike in the coming winter.

@jakewilliamson
@jakewilliamson 7 лет назад
hi nick, it is indeed a bit of a spot! i've realised that i've spent more hours on the river over the last year or so than at lakes which is great. this winters target are a 4lb+ chub and to catch as many pike as i can ;) defo worth getting a new ticket for keynsham aa, i think they come out in december. best of luck!

Clive Wheatley it's over at swineford, the footpath is opposite the swan pub. i fish the stretch on a keynsham aa ticket (£20 for a year, bargain!) and that covers you for from swineford all the way downstream past the old chocolate factory. it's a cracking stretch of river!

Hi mate, really enjoying the videos, have just been down a stretch today near the Lock keeper pub / Brass mill with the weir, lure fishing for pike and perch on the ultralight rod. I am really keen to speak with you as I live in Bristol. Could I add you on facebook mate? My name is Jaky Brown and my profile is a picture of me with a massive Coalfish over in Norway. Im interested to learn a bit more about the area as am just starting to explore these stretches a bit more Cheers mate and thanks for the vids
